UMNO respects individual political choices, remains committed to serving the people
KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO respects the freedom of individuals to make their own political choices, said the party's Information Chief, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
She stressed, however, that ministerial positions within the Cabinet are held based on the mandate of the party represented, and not in a personal capacity.
'Although the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) chairs the Unity Government Leadership Consultative Council, every appointed minister serves as the official representative of their respective party,' she said in a statement today.
Azalina, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), reaffirmed UMNO's commitment to continue serving the nation within the framework of the Unity Government and to uphold the trust of the people.
She also called on all party members and supporters to remain focused on national development.
'An individual's political stance may change, but the party's struggle for religion, race and country must remain steadfast,' Azalina said.
She added that UMNO's Legal Bureau has been tasked with reviewing the implications of the Anti-Party Hopping Act, including the status of a senator, to ensure that any further action complies with the legal framework.
Last Friday, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who is also the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, announced his resignation as a member of the UMNO Supreme Council, chief of the Kota Raja Division and a party member, expressing his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

KOTA KINABALU: The war of words between one-time partners Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Barisan Nasional heats up over accusations of broken promises, disloyalty and betrayal. It started when Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, on Tuesday (June 3), reiterated his unwillingness to work with GRS due to a "dark and bitter" history. He said Barisan must be extra cautious and assess GRS' sincerity before even considering working with them in the 17th state election (PRN), which can be called anytime soon. 'There's an old saying: don't get bitten by the same snake twice,' he said. However, he did not dismiss the possibility of both coalitions working together post election, but stressed that this matter can only be evaluated after the polls. His statement comes after Kota Kinabalu Umno chief Mosliati Muslimin said there was no longer room for political cooperation with GRS or Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) after "betrayals and broken promises". She claimed these betrayals started even during the 2020 state election in the form of vote-splitting tactics where independent candidates were placed in seats meant for BN candidates. She also said that Bung and Barisan had made compromises along the way, which allowed GRS to head the current state government. GRS information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai hit back at Bung, calling his latest remarks arrogant and disconnected from Sabah's political reality. He said Bung was the last person who should talk about loyalty or sincerity as Bung had tried to bring down the very government he was part of, just to serve his own ambition. He dismissed Bung's claim that GRS had betrayed Barisan, describing it as a clear attempt to twist the narrative and deflect from his own actions. 'It is Bung who conspired with Warisan and PKDM in January 2023 to topple the government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor,' said Bangkuai. 'He wasn't betrayed, he was the one betraying. Even while sitting in the state Cabinet, he had no respect for his colleagues in the state government led by Hajiji as Chief Minister,' he said. He stressed that GRS has never been reliant on Umno and was fully prepared to face the upcoming state election independently while warning Bung to stop his arrogance by insinuating that GRS hard up enough to work with Umno-BN. Bangkuai also pointed out that during the political crisis, several Umno assemblymen refused to support Bung's move and instead threw their support for Hajiji, alongside Pakatan Harapan. 'If anyone needs to reflect, it's Bung. Why did even your own colleagues abandon your 'Langkah Kinabalu'? Why did PH support Hajiji, not you? The answer is obvious because the trust wasn't with you,' he said. Joniston, who is also PBS information chief, reiterated that his party would never forget the insult hurled by Bung when he once labelled PBS as "melukut di tepi gantang" (a party that is powerless and useless). 'You showed no respect for PBS or your allies, and now you expect cooperation? Don't be surprised if Sabahans continue to reject Umno like they did in other states across the Peninsula. 'Sabah isn't your political lifeline. Don't treat this state as your fallback plan,' he said, stressing that GRS is now focused on what mattered - unity, stability, and delivering for the people. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) information chief Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan also fired back at Barisan, bringing up the 2020 state elections where Barisan allegedly had agreed to only contest in 27 seats, but fielded 41 candidates on nomination day. 'Barisan must remember they are no longer the 'big boys' in politics. Nationally, their influence has dwindled,' he said. He said for GRS and Gagasan Rakyat, the focus now was to work for the people and state as they prepare for the coming state elections. Libaran assemblyman Datuk Suhaimi Nasir, who is also Libaran Umno chief, meanwhile, reminded Bangkuai how his political career started - during Barisan's era. He said Bangkuai and PBS should not talk about loyalty when history clearly showed otherwise. 'PBS left Barisan a day before the 1990 election and returned to Barisan in 2002, before leaving again in 2018 after Barisan lost in the state election,' he said, adding that PBS were opportunists, seeking a safe space instead of fighting for principles and rights. 'Today you say that you reject Barisan-Umno based on principles, but in the past, you stood in the front line to welcome Barisan when they won elections,' Suhaimi said. He also advised Bangkuai and his party members to not take "loyalty" as a joke because if they were loyalists, they would not have left and returned repeatedly over the years.

Naimah to challenge MACC's freezing order on overseas assets

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Naimah Khalid, the widow of former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, will challenge the court order obtained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to freeze RM758 million worth of assets abroad linked to her and her family. Naimah claimed that the assets were lawfully acquired and that her lawyers would immediately move to set aside the freezing order, which was granted ex parte. 'I will challenge this order to defend what should never be taken from any of us: our rights, our voice, and a country governed by law, not by fear. 'Let there be no doubt that I will fight this politically motivated, reckless, vindictive and lawless action, through all legal means at my disposal,' she said in a statement today. She argued that no reasonable person would say the order was in accordance with fairness or the rules of natural justice, accusing MACC of obtaining it by ambush. The Kuala Lumpur High Court reportedly granted MACC's application to freeze £132 million (RM758.2 million) worth of assets in London belonging to Naimah and her family. The assets include two commercial buildings, five luxury residences, and one bank account, Utusan Malaysia reported. Naimah alleged that the move was part of a 'long and continuous smear campaign' against her family by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki since late 2022. 'No crime of any kind has ever been proven against Daim. No charges were brought in his lifetime, and none after his death,' she said, adding that the Anti-Money Laundering Act cited by MACC required a serious offence to be proven first. She warned that failure to push back against such actions would embolden those in power to act with impunity. 'A line has been crossed. And if we do not resist, there may soon be no lines left at all. Then no Malaysian will be safe from the reach of unchecked power,' she said. Daim was charged in January last year with failing to declare assets to MACC, including interests in 38 companies, 19 land plots in five states, six properties, two unit trust accounts and seven luxury vehicles. MACC said he had asked for five deadline extensions but still failed to comply. After Daim's death on Nov 13 last year, the prosecution withdrew the charges, and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him. Naimah also faces an asset declaration charge. Tun Daim's widow to contest asset freeze order
PETALING JAYA: Tun Daim Zainuddin's widow Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid plans to challenge the order to freeze Daim's overseas assets by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) through the Kuala Lumpur High Court. "I will challenge this order to defend what should never be taken from any of us: our rights, our voice, and a country governed by law, not by fear. "I was not notified of the asset seizure by MACC, which is a shocking infringement of the most basic legal norms. It is unacceptable that this is happening in Malaysia," she said. Naimah added that she only became aware of the order through media reports and added that the government's seizure of property without notifying the legal owner sets a dangerous precedent. She then accused the MACC of obtaining the ex-parte order secretly behind closed doors, saying in a statement on Wednesday (June 4) that she was never given a chance to speak and adding that she should have been allowed to in court. Naimah then said that this action is being taken despite no crime being proven against Daim. "The law under which the MACC is acting, the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA), requires such orders only be granted where there is a 'serious offence' as defined under the Second Schedule. "No such offence or charge has ever been proven or brought against me or Daim, neither during his lifetime nor after his death," Na'imah added. On Tuesday (June 3), the High Court approved the MACC application to freeze assets worth UK£132mil (RM759mil) in London, United Kingdom allegedly owned by Na'imah and her family. Judge Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid granted the ex-parte (unilateral) application by the MACC under Section 53 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001), for investigation under Section 4(1) of the same act. The assets include two commercial buildings at St Mary Axe and One Crown Court, three luxury residences in Bryanston Square, Bryanston Mews, and Lancaster Gate, two residential units at Gloucester Place, and a bank account at CAF Bank Ltd (UK) allegedly owned by The Ilham Foundation.
