On 22 July, BSF received an alert that a woman was transporting a consignment of gold via train for smuggling purposes. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, a BSF team tracked the suspected woman and informed the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Nadia's Ranaghat, an official said. The RPF officials stopped the woman at Ranaghat Railway Station and brought her to the RPF office for questioning. During the search, five gold biscuits weighing a total of 583 grams were recovered from her.
During a joint interrogation by BSF and RPF, the woman confessed that she had received a call from a man instructing her to deliver the consignment and she was promised Rs 1,000 for the task. She was directed to deliver it to a person at Simurali Railway Station.
Public Relations Officer of BSF South Bengal Frontier N K Pandey expressed satisfaction over the success of the operation and appealed to the residents of border areas to immediately share any information related to gold smuggling via BSF's "Seema Saathi" helpline number 14419 or WhatsApp number 9903472227 through text or voice message.
He assured that credible information will be rewarded and the identity of the informer will be kept strictly confidential.
Meanwhile, South Bengal Frontier of Border Security Force (BSF), deployed along the India-Bangladesh international border in North 24 Parganas and Nadia districts, thwarted multiple attempts to smuggle narcotics through vigilant monitoring and swift action. During these operations, a total of 89.4 kilograms of Ganja was seized.
The seized narcotics have been handed over to the concerned authorities following the necessary legal procedures.
Pandey said due to BSF's 'continuous surveillance and strategic operations, major smuggling attempts are being foiled. BSF remains dedicated to ensuring the security of border areas through rigorous monitoring and precise operations.'

Over 22 Crore Farmers Receive Rs 1.83 Lakh Crore Compensation Under PMFBY Since 2016

New Delhi: Since its launch in 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) has insured 78.41 crore farmer applications up to June 30, 2025. During this period, around 22.67 crore farmers have received compensation amounting to Rs 1.83 lakh crore, highlighting the scheme's wide reach and impact in supporting farmers against crop loss, informed Ramnath Thakur, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in a written reply to Rajya Sabha on August 1. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana on February 18, 2025 , completed nine years of its launch. Launched in 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scheme provides a comprehensive shield against crop losses caused by unforeseen natural hazards. This protection not only stabilises farmers' income but also encourages them to adopt new practices. Crop insurance is an important risk mitigation measure to protect farmers from natural calamities. Its purpose is to provide financial assistance to farmers suffering from crop loss/damage due to natural calamities such as hailstorm , drought , flood , cyclone , heavy and unseasonal rains , disease and pest attacks etc. MoS further apprised the house about the steps undertaken by the government to strengthen implementation of this scheme, according to Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. Among the various steps, development of National Crop Insurance Portal (NCIP) as a single source of data ensuring subsidy payment, co-ordination, transparency, dissemination of information and delivery of services including direct online enrolment of farmers, uploading/obtaining individual insured famer's details for better monitoring and to ensure transfer of claim amount electronically to the individual farmer's Bank Account. In order to rigorously monitor claim disbursal process, a dedicated module namely 'Digiclaim Module' has been operationalized for payment of claims from Kharif 2022 onwards. It involves integration of National Crop Insurance Portal (NCIP) with Public Finance Management System (PFMS) and accounting system of Insurance Companies. Delinking of Central Government share of premium subsidy from that of State Governments has been implemented so that farmers can get proportionate claims relating to the Central Government share. Opening of ESCROW Account by the State Government concerned for deposit of their premium share in advance as per provisions of the scheme has been made mandatory w.e.f. Kharif 2025 season. Also, towards leveraging technology in implementation of the scheme, various steps like capturing of yield data/Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs) data through CCE-Agri App & uploading it on the NCIP, allowing insurance companies to witness the conduct of CCEs, integration of State land records with NCIP etc. have already been taken to improve timely settlement of the claims to farmers. Provision of 12 per cent penalty on delay in payment of claims by insurance company is auto calculated on National Crop Insurance Portal (NCIP). MoS said that both Public Sector and Private Insurance Companies have been involved to increase the coverage of farmers especially non-loanee farmers and to bring more competition in crop insurance sector so as to provide the best services to farmers at competitive rates. Due to increased competition, actuarial/bidded premium rates have also decreased. As compared to erstwhile crop insurance schemes, coverage of farmer applications has increased from 371 lakhs in 2014-15 to 1510 lakhs in 2024-25. He added that the number of non-loanee farmer applications has also increased from 20 lakhs in 2014-15 to 522 lakhs in 2024-25.

Second accused arrested in Gurugram scrap dealers murder

Agency: Last Updated: Gurugram, Aug 3 (PTI) Gurugram Police on Sunday arrested a second accused in the case where a 40-year-old scrap dealer was allegedly stabbed to death by his live-in partner in DLF Phase 3. The arrested accused — Vijay alias Sethi (47), a resident of Baliawas village and a friend of the deceased Harish Sharma — was present at the scene of crime, police said. Sharma's live-in partner Yashmeet Kaur (27) was arrested on Saturday. Both the accused were produced before a duty magistrate court on Sunday and remanded to two-day police custody, they said. Meanwhile, in a complaint filed with the police, Sharma's nephew Bharat said that his uncle had come home and collected Rs 7 lakh from him hours before the incident and left with Vijay in a car. According to a senior investigating officer, Vijay was present in the house when Kaur stabbed Sharma on his chest. He might have played a bigger role in the murder conspiracy, the officer said. 'Vijay's role is not clear yet, but he was present at the scene. We are questioning both the accused," said a Gurugram Police spokesperson. According to police, Sharma, a resident of Baliawas village in Gurugram, had been in a live-in relationship with Kaur for more than a year and the couple lived in a rented flat. Sharma was married and had two daughters, who lived with his wife in the village. His wife was not keeping well for some time and Sharma would often talk to her, which infuriated Kaur, police said. On Saturday night, Kaur walked in on Sharma conversing with his wife, and the couple had a heated argument. In a fit of rage, Kaur stabbed Sharma in the chest with a kitchen knife. He was taken to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival, said police. Sharma's friend Vijay was allegedly present in another room in the house when the incident happened, they said. In his complaint, Sharma's nephew Bharat alleged that both Kaur and Vijay planned the murder. Bharat stated that hours before the altercation, his uncle had come home from his job in Faridabad, took Rs 7 lakh from him and left in a car Vijay had brought. Police said that Kaur, a resident of Ashok Vihar in Delhi, has confessed to stabbing Sharma. The murder weapon and a blood-stained T-shirt were seized from the flat, they added.
