'Ghost of Yōtei' Developer Striving For Authentic Depiction Of Hokkaido And Ainu Culture
This comes from the latest entry in a series of PlayStation blog posts, where Fox described their trips to Japan to learn more about Hokkaido, the setting of the game, and more specifically, the Ainu culture, an indigenous group primarily inhabiting the area. The Sucker Punch team at Matsuamae Castle, Hokkaido
'When setting a game in Hokkaido, we knew a crucial element was doing our best to represent Ainu culture in a respectful way.' Fox wrote, 'Thankfully, we'd connected with an Ainu cultural adviser before setting out on our reference gathering trip [and] travelled up a nearby mountain and got to know each other while foraging for vegetables.'
'That night we resolved to put foraging into our new game, we wanted players to be able to share the experience we were lucky enough to have experienced.'
According to Fox, the team also spent some time in the Oshima Peninsula, which was the domain of the Matsuamae clan in the 1600s, noting that even today, the Wajin people, the main ethic group in Japan, seldom live as far North as Hokkaido. 'We've tried to mimic that quality in the game, leaning into areas of wilderness between homesteads,' he added.
The team also visited the Nibutani Ainu Museum, which helped them 'get a sense for sorts of objects [seen] in the game and how they were used,' alongside learning about Edo-period Japan by visiting places in Honshu such as Nikko Toshogu Shrine, to which they received a blessing for the game from the enshrined deity, Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Despite the game being a few months from release, it's already clear how much respect the Sucker Punch team has paid to portraying the games setting as accurately as possible, a move that will surely serve to enrich Ghost of Yōtei's world when the game launches on 2 October 2025 for the PS5.

'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle' Shatters Record For Fastest Film To Hit ¥10 Billion In Japan
Nothing can stand in the way of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle , as it continues to take the Japanese box office by storm. Following a record-breaking opening haul at the domestic box office, the anime pic has grossed 12.8 billion yen (US$87.1 million) in its first 10 days, becoming the fastest film to cross 10 billion yen (US$67.4 million) in the country. The previous record holder was held by 2020's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie –Infinity Train , which is also currently the top-grossing film of all time in Japan after 73 days at the box office. Of a listed total earnings of 40.43 billion yen (US$273 million) domestically, 4.6 billion yen (US$43.85 million at the time) came from its first three days, including 1.2 billion yen (US$12.03 million at the time) from the opening day alone. In comparison, Infinity Castle earned 5.5 billion (US$37.38 million) yen in its first three days and racked up 7.3 billion yen (US$49.50 million) over a four-day long weekend. It's a very strong start for the first film in a planned trilogy, with its opening week soaring way past expectations, but the success was already mapped out since the beginning. The trailer debut registered more than 40 million views within 24 hours on official social media platforms, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle now holds three major all-time records: the highest opening performance, the biggest first-day earnings, and the strongest single-day box office in Japanese film history. Releasing on 14 August in Singapore, it picks up after the finale of the fourth anime season, when Muzan Kibutsuji (Toshihiko Seki / Greg Chun) traps Tanjiro Kamado (Natsuki Hanae / Zach Aguliar) and his companions of the Demon Slayer Corps inside his fortress, the Infinity Castle, where a decisive battle between the Demon Slayers and Muzan's subordinates, the Upper Moons, kicks off. Infinity Train 's Haruo Sotozaki is directing the movie at returning studio ufotable, with Aimer and LiSA performing the songs 'Taiyō ga Noboranai Sekai' ('A World Where the Sun Never Rises') and 'Zankoku no Yoru ni Kagayake' ('Shine in the Cruel Night'), respectively. It will screen in IMAX and both Japanese with English subtitles, as well as in English dub. The fourth movie in the lineup serves more as a feature-length multi-film adaptation like Mugen Train instead of the Swordsmith Village and Hashira Training compilation films, and is set to adapt the first part of the final arc of Koyoharu Gotoge's manga. It opens in theatres on 14 August. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get. Atari 2600+ Gets Pac-Man Themed Re-Release In Oct
Retro gamers are about to get a strikingly yellow blast from the past, as Atari and Bandai Namco have teamed up for the Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition, a special re-release of the 2023 classic console refresh that celebrates the 45th anniversary of the iconic yellow puck. Originally launched in 2023, the Atari 2600+ served as a modern-day recreation of the classic '70s gaming console, retaining its retro feel while incorporating current-generation technologies like HDMI and USB-C ports, alongside the ability to run both 2600 and 7800 cartridges. The new Pac-Man Edition offers the same experience, this time decked out in the character's signature yellow hue, which engulfs almost its entire chassis, even featuring an appearance by the friendly puck alongside the four ghosts. 'The Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition is more than just a console,' manufacturer Plaion wrote in the console's announcement, 'it's a tribute to the moment home gaming truly began. By reimagining the iconic hardware in Pac-Man's unmistakable style, we're celebrating the legacy of two cultural giants who helped define a generation of play.' The Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition will also come with a matching yellow CX-40 wireless joystick, although different colour variations will also be sold separately, each themed after the four ghosts, including Red (Blinky), Cyan (Inky), Orange (Clyde) and Pink (Pinky). The console will also come with a Pac-Man Double Feature cartridge, which comprises the very first home console release of the original 1980s game, Pac-Man 2600 , alongside a new arcade-style version of the classic Pac-Man 7800 . Pre-orders for the Atari 2600+ Pac-Man Edition will open on 23 July 2025, with the console releasing on 31 October 2025 priced at US$169.99. Individual wireless joysticks will cost US$39.99 each, alongside classic Bandai Namco games like Dig Dug 7800 or Galaga 7800 , each priced at US$34.99, with additional game and joystick console bundles also available.
