Aziza Rabbah: Built to Last, Born to Defend

CAF13-07-2025
At 39, Aziza Rabbah delivered a defensive masterclass to steer Morocco past Senegal in their final Group A match, claiming the coveted Player of the Match award and reaffirming her timeless value to the Atlas Lionesses. No longer just a veteran, Rabbah is an institution in Moroccan women's football. The long-serving AS FAR centre-back rolled back the years in the 1–0 win, anchoring the backline with calm assurance and leadership to help Morocco seal top spot in the group and advance to the knockout rounds of the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations. She completed the full 90 minutes, completed 45 passes, made two critical tackles, and committed just one foul — a disciplined and composed showing that not only earned her individual recognition but also delivered Morocco's first clean sheet of the tournament.
'Honestly, winning this trophy as the Woman of the Match is not my personal achievement but that of the whole team,' Rabbah said. 'It was a surprise for me and it meant a lot to me, especially for my professional career.'
A Defender's Redemption For a player who has proudly worn Morocco's colours since 2006, Rabbah's journey has seen both high honours and hard omissions. At the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, she was selected at 36 — the oldest player in the squad — but remained on the bench throughout the team's historic run to the final and qualification for a maiden FIFA Women's World Cup. A year later, her name was absent from the final squad list for the global showpiece in Australia and New Zealand. But Rabbah didn't retreat, but stayed prepared. Her return to the starting lineup in 2024 is not a gesture of sentiment but a reward for enduring form and unwavering fitness.'I did my best as the oldest player in the team,' she added. 'I thank my colleagues, my family who support me a lot, and the coach who always trusts me.'
Her performance didn't go unnoticed by Morocco's head coach Jorge Vildah, who hailed her presence and experience, saying, 'Aziza is a very good and experienced player. She brings a lot to the team, and we thank her for that. I'm happy for her.'
Inspiring Victory, Leadership, and LegacyThough Senegal proved physically tough and tactically disciplined, Morocco fought smart, with Rabbah acting as the defensive fulcrum. Her positioning, leadership, and reading of the game allowed the Atlas Lionesses to contain threats and play with control under pressure.'We came with so much determination. We wanted to stay in this city. Three points are not easy. We had three tough games, but thanks to the efforts of my teammates and the coach's instructions, we won. Thanks to God we were gifted,' she said.True to character, Rabbah was quick to shift the spotlight from herself to her teammates. Even in assessing Morocco's missed scoring opportunities, her focus remained on the collective outcome.
'We missed several chances, yes, but when we scored, we kept pushing. This is football — sometimes you miss, sometimes you score. The most important thing is we got the three points, and we're leading the group with heads held high.'
A Decorated Career That Still Shines Born in Rabat, Rabbah began her career at FC Berrechid, where she won the North African Championship, several domestic league titles, and the 2008 Throne Cup. She would go on to sign for AS FAR FC, a club with which she has cemented her legend. With the Rabat-based giants, Rabbah has won 11 Moroccan Women's Championships between 2013 and 2024, along with 11 Moroccan Throne Cups. On the continental stage, she helped AS FAR to a historic CAF Women's Champions League title in 2022, in addition to two third-place finishes in 2021 and 2023. She also lifted the UNAF Women's Champions League trophy twice, in 2021 and 2024.Individually, she was named Best Player of the Moroccan Championship in 2014 and was included in the CAF Women's Champions League Team of the Tournament in 2022.On the international front, she has been a dependable fixture for Morocco since 2006, representing the country in qualifying campaigns for multiple Africa Cup of Nations, World Cups, and Olympic Games. Her longevity at the highest level is a reflection of not only talent but discipline and professionalism.
A Symbol of Endurance and Grace In a sport where youth often dominates headlines, Aziza Rabbah remains a beacon of enduring class. Her influence goes beyond minutes played or trophies lifted. She has outlasted eras, mentored generations, and continues to contribute at the highest level not by reputation, but by performance. As Morocco eyes a deep run in this year's WAFCON, the Atlas Lionesses will take confidence in knowing that at the heart of their defence stands a player whose career is built on resilience, quiet excellence, and unswerving commitment.'It meant a lot to me,' she said of her latest accolade. 'Especially at this stage of my career.'
And for Morocco's historic WAFCON crown quest, her presence means even more.

Zamalek announce defender Mohamed Ismael as eighth summer signing - Egyptian Football

Egyptian Premier League side Zamalek have announced the signing of defender Mohamed Ismael from ZED FC, marking their eighth new arrival of the summer. ZED FC confirmed the move earlier this week, posting a farewell message on social media: 'Thank you, Mohamed Ismael. Wish you the best in your next journey at Zamalek,' the club wrote on Facebook. Zamalek are looking to rebuild their squad after a disappointing 2023–24 campaign in which they finished third in the league and were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup at the quarter-final stage. The 26-year-old joins a busy list of new recruits that includes Swedish-Palestinian winger Adam Kaied, goalkeeper El-Mahdi Soliman, Angolan forward Chico Banza, Moroccan U-20 international Abdelhamid Maali, Pharco FC attacking duo Amr Nasser and Ahmed Sherif, and NBE Club midfielder Ahmed Rabie. How TotalEnergies CAF CHAN catapulted Morocco's El Kaabi to global stardom

With just days to go before the start of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, it is timely to remember how one man's extraordinary 2018 campaign turned previous obscurity into international acclaim. Morocco striker Ayoub El Kaabi emerged from the competition reserved exclusively for players active in their domestic leagues in Africa, igniting a career that would see him become one of Europe's most prolific finishers, earning him the Best Player and Top Scorer of the Greek top-flight as well as winning UEFA Europa Conference League Best Player award. His performance at the TotalEnergies CHAN 2018 in Morocco as the Top Scorer and Best Player transformed him from a domestic unknown into a sought‑after striker, launching a journey through China, Turkey and finally to European glory at Greek giants Olympiacos. His story proves that CHAN is more than a continental competition, it is a player's gateway to the world stage. TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2018: The explosive breakthrough El Kaabi's breakthrough came in January 2018 when Morocco hosted the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN. He lit up the tournament with an astounding nine goals in just six matches, becoming the all‑time single‑edition top scorer in the competition's history and earning both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards. Morocco won the title with a 4–0 final victory over Nigeria, and El Kaabi capped the night with his goal in the 73rd minute, sealing debut glory at home. 'I scored nine goals in the tournament, and that moment changed everything for me,' El Kaabi recalled, reflecting on his breakthrough. His nine-goal haul remains the highest by any player in a single TotalEnergies CAF CHAN edition. El Kaabi's rise began far from the glitz of football academies. Born in Casablanca in 1993, he left school at 15 and worked as a carpenter, juggling labour and weekly amateur matches. His big domestic chance came with Racing Casablanca, where his natural goalscoring ability – 25 goals in 33 second‑division matches – earned him a move to RS Berkane in Morocco's top flight. But it was at TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2018 that El Kaabi announced himself to the world with the global football lens focused on Africa's competition designed for just home-based players. Scoring nine in six games, including a hat‑trick against Guinea and the winner in the 4–0 final over Nigeria, earned him the competition's best personal awards. 'I learned that one can only reach success through hard work,' El Kaabi said afterwards. Scouts circle after CHAN triumph The Moroccan striker's performances proved that TotalEnergies CAF CHAN could be a showcase for unheralded talent to break through, and El Kaabi was the poster child. His exploits immediately attracted international attention. Spanish media reported interest from Atlético Madrid, while clubs across Europe began monitoring the Moroccan striker. Indeed, the interest was not just focused in Europe but several clubs in the Middle East and other parts of Asia also expressed interest in the budding attacker. The domestic league in China was then on the rise with several clubs in the top-flight also active in the transfer market by competing with European clubs for the best talent in the world. Career path: Domestic rise to Continental acclaim El Kaabi's club career was destined to accelerate following the interest from clubs across the globe. He subsequently moved from Morocco's RS Berkane to Hebei China Fortune on a lucrative deal. Though the move proved mixed for development, it established him financially. He returned to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in 2019 and topped the domestic scoring charts in 2020-21 before moving to Turkey's Hatayspor, where he scored 26 goals in 53 matches. In summer 2023 came a turning point: his transfer to Olympiacos in Greece. Since then, his impact has been seismic. In the 2023-24 UEFA Conference League, El Kaabi scored 11 goals in nine matches, including a remarkable hat‑trick against Aston Villa in the semi-final , the first ever in that round of the competition, and then the winning goal in extra time of the final versus Fiorentina. It was Olympiakos' first major European title. El Kaabi's 11 knockout goals set a UEFA record, surpassing legends like Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao and finishing as the Conference League Top Scorer and Player of the Competition. He also set other records: the first African to hit double-digit goals in that UEFA tournament, and most knockout‑stage goals in a single European season. Over the entire European campaign, the Moroccan finished with 14 goals (combining Europa League and Conference League), becoming the most prolific African in a single UEFA club season, and the first non‑European to score 14 goals or more in a campaign since Lionel Messi in 2011-12. Present day: Olympiacos icon, European star By early 2025, El Kaabi had become Olympiacos's all‑time leading European competition scorer, reaching 21 goals in just 26 matches, surpassing the mark previously held by Youssef El Arabi. The Moroccan continued his fine form: he won the Greek Super League with Olympiacos and finished the season as Super League top scorer, also named Best Foreign Player and Player of the Season, and firmly established himself among Africa's elite forwards. Olympiacos manager Jose Luis Mendilibar described him as: 'He's a special player. His hunger and focus drive this team forward.' And while the World Cup eluded him in 2022, he responded by bagging a World Cup qualifying hat‑trick in June 2024, taking his national team goals to 16 in 42 caps. CHAN as a platform: Opening doors for others Today, aged 32, El Kaabi is firmly among Europe's elite strikers, with records, titles and accolades to prove it, but the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN remains the springboard that launched his legend. His journey remains a testament to the competition's transformative power. A competition reserved for players in local leagues, it offered him a global platform at age 24. As TotalEnergies CAF CHAN PAMOJA 2024 approaches in East Africa, nations across Africa will look to replicate that narrative. Players currently competing in the competition have similar aspirations, use the tournament to shine, attract interest, and launch careers to become global superstars.

Zamalek sign midfielder Rabie from NBE Club on a five-year contract - Egyptian Football

Zamalek have completed the signing of defensive midfielder Ahmed Rabie from NBE Club, the Cairo giants announced on Tuesday, marking their seventh summer signing so far Zamalek have been active in the transfer market, bringing in goalkeeper El-Mahdi Soliman, Angolan winger Chico Banza, forwards Amr Nasser and Ahmed Sherif, Moroccan U-20 international Abdelhamid Maali, and Swedish-Palestinian winger Adam Kaied. Rabie made 31 appearances in all competitions last season for NBE Club, registering a single assist. The move of the 24-year-old to Zamalek appears to be part of a swap deal, following winger Mostafa Shalaby's recent switch in the opposite direction. Zamalek are looking to rebuild after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign in which they finished third in the Egyptian Premier League and were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup. The Whites open their new league season on 9 August with a challenging fixture against Ceramica Cleopatra at Suez Stadium.
