Singapore President Tharman to undertake a working visit to Ipoh as NUS chancellor
SINGAPORE (Bernama): Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will make a two-day working visit to Ipoh, Perak, starting August 25 in conjunction with the 54th Universiti Malaya-NUS Inter-University Tunku Chancellor Golf Tournament (UM-NUS Golf Tournament).
The President's Office said Tharman's visit, which will be hosted by the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who is also the Chancellor of UM, is undertaken in his capacity as Chancellor of the National University of Singapore (NUS).
"During the visit, President Tharman will meet with the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, at Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar,' the statement said.
The Sultan and the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, will also host Tharman, his wife Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, and the two university delegations to a royal dinner at the Istana.
The two Chancellors will also take part in the 2nd UM-NUS Joint Academic Symposium: Precision Health on August 26.
Meanwhile, Tharman will also make a working visit to Geneva, Switzerland, from August 18 to 21 to attend meetings of the World Economic Forum (WEF)'s Board of Trustees and International Business Council.
He is also scheduled to meet World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and selected business leaders, as well as meet overseas Singaporeans based in Switzerland at a National Day Reception. - Bernama

Op Sohor: MACC received information from Johor Regent
CYBERJAYA — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) revealed today Johor Regent, Tunku Mahkota Ismail had provided information that assisted the investigations under Op Sohor, which are currently still ongoing. 'They work for a company, which name I can't reveal, and we're looking into why it was set up,' Azam said, adding that they believed that both the suspects acted as enablers by leaking information to the syndicate. The MACC had arrested five senior armed forces officers on Wednesday for allegedly leaking military operation information to smugglers and colluding with a syndicate to smuggle in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, estimated to be worth RM5 million a month. Meanwhile, Azam said during his speech at the close of KOMAWAR that it was organised not only to provide exposure and education on corruption and integrity but to instill values and build character among university students. The biennial KOMAWAR's objective is to shape a generation of graduates to reject corruption and allow youth to support integrity and transparency in the country's administration, he added. — BERNAMA

Pahang Introduces Malaysia's First Prebiotic Rice
TEMERLOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Pahang has become the first state in Malaysia to produce prebiotic rice, marketed under the brand name Beras Pahang. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the rice differs from other local varieties as it offers multiple benefits. 'Beras Pahang has its uniqueness. It is a prebiotic rice, low in sugar, and suitable for those with diabetes. 'It has already entered the market in limited quantities. For now, we are prioritising sales in Pahang before distribution in other states,' he told reporters after opening the Pahang Mini MAHA 2025 at Dataran Temerloh here today. Cultivated in the Ganchong paddy fields in Pekan, the rice is said to be tastier, more fragrant and softer, while its prebiotic content supports digestion and overall bowel health. At the event, Beras Pahang was offered at RM8 per kilogramme. Commenting on the inaugural Pahang Mini MAHA 2025, Wan Rosdy said it will be held at different locations each year following an overwhelming response, with over 80,000 visitors recorded today. Meanwhile, citing the Malaysian Agriculture Census interim report released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, he said Pahang has proven its capability as the country's second-largest contributor to the agriculture sector, after Johor, with sales worth RM25.12 billion. Of that amount, he said 88 per cent came from the crop subsector, proving Pahang's fertile land and the hardworking spirit of its people.

Home Minister: Foreigner's Visa Status Does Not Grant Immunity To Break Malaysian Law
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The visa status held by foreigners does not grant them immunity to break the law in this country. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said firm and stringent action will be taken against any foreign national who violates Malaysia's laws, including breaching pass conditions, posing a security threat, or disturbing public order. He said actions taken include pass cancellation, blacklisting, and deportation to the country of origin, and this principle is applied consistently, irrespective of the individual's background or status. "Visa status, whether as a student, investor, long-term visit pass holder, or participant in the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme, does not provide immunity from the laws of this country. "The safety of Malaysians and the sovereignty of the nation are non-negotiable priorities," he said in a statement tonight. Saifuddin said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) consistently carries out its enforcement duties in a professional manner, without discrimination or exceptions based on race or country of origin, particularly in cases involving foreigners. He added that the law investigates all reports involving foreign nationals and takes appropriate action to ensure public safety, including in cases that receive media coverage. "Recent incidents involving foreigners that have gone viral have drawn public attention, but it must be emphasised that each case will be handled properly through existing laws," he said. He further said that Malaysia has specified that the recruitment of low-skilled foreign workers is permitted only from 15 officially designated source countries, and China is not among them.
