Severe Drought Grips over Half of Europe, Mediterranean

Israa Farhan More than half of Europe and the Mediterranean coastline has been under drought conditions for four straight months, with July marking the worst level since records began in 2012, according to an AFP analysis of European Drought Observatory data. In July, drought affected 52% of European land and Mediterranean shores—21 percentage points higher than the 2012–2021 average. The region has been breaking drought records month after month since the start of the year. Some countries have seen dramatic spikes in water scarcity. In Hungary, drought coverage jumped from 9% in June to 56% in July; in Kosovo, from 6% to 43%; and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, from 1% to 23%. The Balkans, plagued by intense heatwaves since early summer, have also faced an unprecedented number of wildfires, including illegal open-air landfill fires that emit toxic smoke and gases. In the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey has endured persistent drought affecting over 60% of its territory every month since March. This prolonged dryness has fuelled wildfires, such as the recent blazes in the country's west that forced the evacuation of three villages and temporarily halted shipping through the Dardanelles Strait. Western Europe has experienced more varied conditions. In France, drought worsened sharply from 44% of land in June to 68% in July. The country recently battled one of the largest wildfires in its history, which scorched 13,000 hectares in the southern Aude department. France is now facing its second extreme heatwave of the summer. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

Remains of Antarctic Researcher Dennis ‘Tink' Bell Found After 66 Years

Rana Atef The remains of British meteorologist Dennis 'Tink' Bell have been found in Antarctica, 66 years after he vanished in a crevasse accident. A Polish research team discovered the bones and personal items such as radio equipment, a wristwatch, and a pipe stem in rocks exposed by the retreating Ecology Glacier on King George Island. DNA testing by King's College London confirmed the identity, matching samples from Bell's surviving siblings. Bell, who was 25 years old at the time, was working for the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, which is now the British Antarctic Survey, when he fell through hidden ice while leading a dog sled team on 26 July 1959. A rescue attempt failed when his belt snapped as he was being hauled up. His body was never recovered until now. The remains were transported via the BAS ship Sir David Attenborough to the Falkland Islands, then flown to the UK. His family, 'shocked and amazed' by the discovery, say the find has brought long-awaited closure. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

Egypt's Mufti Inaugurates Activities of 10th International Fatwa Conference in Cairo

Mohamed Mandour Dr. Nazir Mohammad Ayyad, Grand Mufti of Egypt and President of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, inaugurated the 10th International Fatwa Conference, currently held under the theme 'The Making of the Competent Mufti in the Age of Artificial Intelligence' and under the esteemed patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Dr. Ayyad emphasized that the digital revolution and the rise of AI require religious institutions to prepare a new generation of muftis capable of engaging with these technologies in a thoughtful and principled manner. The Grand Mufti stressed that issuing fatwas remains a profoundly human task, grounded in the fear of God, insight of the heart, and wisdom of purpose — qualities no machine can replicate. He called for the development of Shari'ah-based AI models subject to rigorous scholarly and maqāṣid-driven oversight, alongside the establishment of a global ethical charter to govern the interaction between sacred texts and technology. Turning to the ongoing crisis in Gaza, the Grand Mufti described it as both a jurisprudential and humanitarian test, exposing the silence of the global conscience. He affirmed that supporting Gaza is not a political choice but a binding Shari'ah obligation and moral imperative. Highlighting the Israeli occupation's use of AI to track and target civilians with deadly precision, he warned of the grave consequences when technology is divorced from ethical values. His Eminence appealed to people of conscience worldwide to stand with Gaza's people, commending Egypt's unwavering stance in rejecting all attempts to displace Palestinians or undermine their cause, and its steadfast commitment to defending their legitimate rights with honor and resolve. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani
