Recent Yankees Reliever Lands MLB Opportunity With Red Sox
A recent New York Yankees relief pitcher has resurfaced with the AL East rival Boston Red Sox.
Right-handed reliever Nick Burdi earned an Opening Day bullpen role with the Yankees in 2024. And he quickly proved the front office right for trusting in him, pitching to a 1.86 ERA over his first 12 appearances.

Unfortunately, Burdi's 2024 campaign ended on May 24, as the Yankees were forced to place him on the injured list with right hip inflammation. Burdi spent the remainder of the season either on the IL or in Triple-A.
He signed with the Red Sox in February.

On May 16, 2025, the Red Sox announced that they had "selected right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester."
Right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell was optioned to Triple-A Worcester as a result, with injured starter Kutter Crawford also being transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Although Burdi only spent parts of the 2023 and 2024 campaigns inside the Yankees organization, he's had a long and winding career that began as a high-end prospect of the Minnesota Twins.

The Twins selected Burdi (for the second time) during round two of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft. But he never pitched in a major league outing for Minnesota, undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017.
Most of Burdi's MLB career came later, as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Over three seasons' worth of spot appearances with the Pirates, Burdi pitched to a cumulative 9.49 ERA. He missed the 2021 campaign due to Tommy John surgery, once again, before joining the Chicago Cubs in 2022.
Burdi didn't have much success with the Cubs at the pro level either, but he reinvented himself with the Yankees, even if the end result was brief.

It'll be interesting to see which Burdi the Red Sox get in Boston, although MLB Trade Rumors noted that the 32-year-old reliever managed a 0.54 ERA over 16.2 innings at Triple-A Worcester.

One of them, though, has been designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn. Orioles DH Ryan O'Hearn has been a bright spot for Baltimore He's one of the top DHs in the AL at this time. O'Hearn is hitting .328 with nine home runs and 23 RBI. He's got a .525 slugging percentage, which means O'Hearn is making solid contact. If the Orioles had a chance to put one of their players on this season's All-Star team, then O'Hearn would be a fitting candidate. It's also noteworthy to see if second baseman Jackson Holliday can also get in on the summertime fun, too. Advertisement Holliday had a pretty solid May, but the trick is repeating that in June and all summer long. Orioles fans know all about the team's pitching situation. It's not good. This needs to be addressed for any real marked improvement record-wise going forward. At least Baltimore can take comfort in the fact that they've played better than the Colorado Rockies. There needs to be some serious front office conversations on getting Baltimore back in the AL East playoff picture. Should O'Hearn and Holliday become the backbone of an Orioles' rally this season, Baltimore might just surge back into the postseason conversation.
