Recent Yankees Reliever Lands MLB Opportunity With Red Sox
A recent New York Yankees relief pitcher has resurfaced with the AL East rival Boston Red Sox.
Right-handed reliever Nick Burdi earned an Opening Day bullpen role with the Yankees in 2024. And he quickly proved the front office right for trusting in him, pitching to a 1.86 ERA over his first 12 appearances.

Unfortunately, Burdi's 2024 campaign ended on May 24, as the Yankees were forced to place him on the injured list with right hip inflammation. Burdi spent the remainder of the season either on the IL or in Triple-A.
He signed with the Red Sox in February.

On May 16, 2025, the Red Sox announced that they had "selected right-handed pitcher Nick Burdi to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester."
Right-handed pitcher Cooper Criswell was optioned to Triple-A Worcester as a result, with injured starter Kutter Crawford also being transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Although Burdi only spent parts of the 2023 and 2024 campaigns inside the Yankees organization, he's had a long and winding career that began as a high-end prospect of the Minnesota Twins.

The Twins selected Burdi (for the second time) during round two of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft. But he never pitched in a major league outing for Minnesota, undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017.
Most of Burdi's MLB career came later, as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Over three seasons' worth of spot appearances with the Pirates, Burdi pitched to a cumulative 9.49 ERA. He missed the 2021 campaign due to Tommy John surgery, once again, before joining the Chicago Cubs in 2022.
Burdi didn't have much success with the Cubs at the pro level either, but he reinvented himself with the Yankees, even if the end result was brief.

It'll be interesting to see which Burdi the Red Sox get in Boston, although MLB Trade Rumors noted that the 32-year-old reliever managed a 0.54 ERA over 16.2 innings at Triple-A Worcester.

Former MLB GM Turns Heads With Surprising Paul Goldschmidt Prediction
Former MLB GM Turns Heads With Surprising Paul Goldschmidt Prediction originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When sharing a lineup with AL MVP frontrunner Aaron Judge, it's easy for veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt's contributions to fall under the radar. Advertisement That may be why longtime MLB executive Jim Bowden omitted Goldschmidt, himself a former NL MVP, from his projected All-Star Game rosters. In a Wednesday column, Bowden instead predicted Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will start at first base for the American League. He also guessed the Tampa Bay Rays' Jonathan Aranda and Detroit Tigers' Spencer Torkelson make the squad as backups. Apparently, posting a .327 average, .859 OPS, and 1.5 bWAR for a division leader doesn't do it anymore. In Bowden's defense, Goldschmidt's power numbers are down, and he's only hit six homers through 59 games. The eight-time All-Star is on track for his fewest home runs over a full season, though his .859 OPS marks his highest since his 2022 NL MVP campaign. Advertisement However, Guerrero has a lower average (.279), OPS (.821), and roughly the same bWAR (1.6) as his Yankees counterpart. Although Torkelson has 14 home runs for the AL Central-leading Tigers, he's also hitting .236 with a 1.4 bWAR. 'He leads AL first basemen in home runs (14) and RBIs (42),' Bowden explained of selecting Torkelson. 'I didn't want to carry three first basemen but felt like he had to make this team.' New York Yankees first baseman Paul GoldschmidtRick Osentoski-Imagn Images If anything, Aranda should be starting because he leads all first basemen in bWAR (2.3) and OPS (.916). Goldschmidt deserves a backup spot, with either Guerrero or Torkelson fighting it out for the third and final bench position. Advertisement Luckily for Yankees fans, they can ensure Goldschmidt earns a July trip to Atlanta. All-Star Voting begins at noon ET on Wednesday, June 4, and the fans determine who starts the Midsummer Classic. We can see it now: Paul Goldschmidt, you are the AL starting first baseman, and you can thank the Yankees' loyal fanbase. Orioles Make Roster Announcement on Recent Yankees Failure
Orioles Make Roster Announcement on Recent Yankees Failure originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former New York Yankees catcher Gary Sánchez is one step closer to smashing his next big-league homer. Sanchez, now with the Baltimore Orioles, began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday night. The 11-year veteran went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in Norfolk's 14-10 victory over the Louisville Bats, the Cincinnati Reds' Triple-A affiliate. Sánchez hasn't played since late April because of a wrist injury. The last-place Orioles haven't missed him much, as Sánchez mustered just a .100 average, a .200 on-base percentage, and a .100 slugging percentage across 35 plate appearances. Advertisement Although Sánchez made two All-Star games in his seven years with the Yankees, he's widely considered one of the organization's biggest disappointments in recent memory. Sánchez's defense, baserunning, and effort frequently landed him on the bench before a 2022 trade to the Minnesota Twins. The Yankees haven't looked back since giving up on Sánchez. Jose Trevino earned Gold Glove honors in 2022 and quickly became a fan favorite. Austin Wells replaced Trevino last year and, while he's still a work in progress, has regularly taken advantage of Yankee Stadium's short porch. Baltimore Orioles catcher Gary SánchezJoe Camporeale-Imagn Images Now a 32-year-old journeyman catcher, Sánchez could nonetheless appeal to a team seeking a bench bat ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. He averaged 17 homers and a .711 OPS from 2021-24, and he's also played a handful of games at first base during his career. Advertisement However, don't expect teams to acquire Sánchez and make him the everyday catcher. Those days are likely long behind him, even if he remains a dangerous power threat. Sánchez is a career .223 hitter with 184 homers and a .767 OPS in nearly 850 games. Baltimore Orioles Struggle to Find Footing in MLB Power Rankings
Baltimore Orioles Struggle to Find Footing in MLB Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's no getting around it: The Baltimore Orioles have been a bad baseball team so far in this MLB season. They have not found solid starting pitching and their reliable young players are slumping. Advertisement While the Orioles have shown a little improvement lately, they remain stuck in the back of the pack in the American League East. Their performance also has them in the No. 24 spot in the latest MLB Power Rankings from The Athletic. Look at the team as a whole, there haven't been too many bright spots. One of them, though, has been designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn. Orioles DH Ryan O'Hearn has been a bright spot for Baltimore He's one of the top DHs in the AL at this time. O'Hearn is hitting .328 with nine home runs and 23 RBI. He's got a .525 slugging percentage, which means O'Hearn is making solid contact. If the Orioles had a chance to put one of their players on this season's All-Star team, then O'Hearn would be a fitting candidate. It's also noteworthy to see if second baseman Jackson Holliday can also get in on the summertime fun, too. Advertisement Holliday had a pretty solid May, but the trick is repeating that in June and all summer long. Orioles fans know all about the team's pitching situation. It's not good. This needs to be addressed for any real marked improvement record-wise going forward. At least Baltimore can take comfort in the fact that they've played better than the Colorado Rockies. There needs to be some serious front office conversations on getting Baltimore back in the AL East playoff picture. Should O'Hearn and Holliday become the backbone of an Orioles' rally this season, Baltimore might just surge back into the postseason conversation. Advertisement A lot of work, though, remains to be done. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 5, 2025, where it first appeared.
