In 2020, Saylor's company Strategy took a novel approach and began buying Bitcoin.
The move has generated enormous returns and sparked a new group of companies following suit.
Despite all the success, Saylor thinks Bitcoin's best days are ahead.
10 stocks we like better than Bitcoin ›
In 2020, Michael Saylor, then the chief executive officer of the business software company Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), made a bold decision. He decided to use the company's capital to begin accumulating Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), the world's most valuable cryptocurrency. At the time, the move seemed incredibly risky, and many people to this day still view the decision as risky.
But Saylor's decision paid off handsomely, and Strategy (formerly known as MicroStrategy) even began tapping the capital markets for funding to buy more Bitcoin. Today, Strategy is seen as the pioneer of the Bitcoin treasury movement, and the company's stock has blasted over 3,160% higher in the past five years. Saylor, who is now the executive chairman of Strategy, thinks the party has only just begun. He sees the price of Bitcoin rising 17,888% from current levels during the next two decades. Here's why.
Remember the number 21
Making big calls on Bitcoin is nothing new for Saylor. Last year, Saylor predicted that Bitcoin could hit $13 million per coin by the year 2045. This argument was based on two main theses.
At the time of this call, Bitcoin only made up about 0.1% of all global net worth. Saylor predicted that continued adoption from institutional and retail investors could propel Bitcoin to 7% of all global net worth. Saylor also said that Bitcoin, even as its volatility declined, was capable of generating a 29% annual rate of return, which would take the token to $13 million.
However, a lot has changed since then, and in June, Saylor hiked his price target to $21 million during the next 21 years. Most of the change seems to be attributed to the shifting regulatory environment ushered in by President Donald Trump, who has been very supportive of the sector.
"Stuff that's happened in the past 11 months has been extraordinary. The White House has embraced Bitcoin. This is an extraordinary development. We didn't anticipate this," Saylor said at a Bitcoin conference in Prague earlier this year. "Although we thought we might have a pro-Bitcoin president, we didn't think we'd get a strategic Bitcoin reserve. We didn't think that the president would say America would be the Bitcoin superpower of the world. This is an amazing development."
Saylor is, of course, right about all of this. Trump's support of crypto has been far beyond anything most could have imagined during the presidential election campaign. Congress recently passed the Genius Act, which will create a broad framework for stablecoins. The Clarity Act, which would create a broad framework for all cryptocurrencies, also has a good chance of passing Congress if the Senate approves the bill. This new legislation could help clear up regulatory uncertainty that has served as a roadblock in the past.
Furthermore, Trump recently signed an executive order that would pave the way for 401(k) accounts to purchase cryptocurrencies, which could significantly increase demand. Former President Joe Biden's administration took a much stricter approach to crypto regulation, and in a matter of months the situation has done a full 180.
Take Saylor's prediction with a grain of salt
No matter who is making the call, I would always advise that investors take crypto price predictions with a grain of salt. Cryptocurrencies are much harder to value than stocks -- and it's not like it's that easy to make accurate price predictions about stocks. Saylor's call looks to be predicated on napkin math at best.
That said, Bitcoin has become a more promising investment. A portion of investors now view Bitcoin and its 21 million coins as a form of digital gold and therefore a way to hedge inflation and market volatility. BlackRock has come out and said that investors can allocate as much as 2% of a multi-asset portfolio to Bitcoin, and the regulatory environment is going to allow many more institutional investors and mainstream financial institutions to get involved with crypto.
I'm not sure where Bitcoin will be in 21 years, let alone next year. But I do think investors can hold some in their portfolio and that it will be a good long-term investment because it potentially serves as a unique diversifier.

Vistra Stock Could Chart Path Back to Record Highs

Vistra Corp (NYSE:VST) stock is up 0.6% to trade at $198.53 at last check, not too far off from its Aug. 5 all-time high of $216.85. The equity is looking to snap a three-day losing streak, with the $190 region providing support as it pulled back from that record peak. Better yet, a historically bullish signal now flashing could soon help shares extend their healthy 150.4% lead. Per Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White, Vistra stock's pullback placed it within one standard deviation of its 50-day moving average. The equity was above this trendline in at least eight of the last 10 trading days, and spent 80% of the past two months above it. Within these parameters, eight other signals occurred over the last three years, after which the security was higher one month later 75% of the time, averaging an 8% gain. From its current perch, a similar move would place back above $213. At the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX), VST's 50-day put/call volume ratio of 1.17 ranks higher than all readings from the past year. In other words, the security could benefit from an unwinding of pessimism. Options are affordable, making this an opportune time to bet on VST's next moves. This is per its Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 49%, which stands in the 10th percentile of readings from the past year.

Starbucks to give all North America salaried employees 2% raise this year, company says

(Reuters) -Starbucks (SBUX) will provide a modest 2% hike to all salaried employees in North America this year, the company told Reuters on Monday, as the coffee chain tries to keep a tight lid on costs as part of CEO Brian Niccol's turnaround efforts. Starbucks, under Niccol, has cut some jobs, tightened dress codes and incentivized keeping costs under control for executives as it invests in reducing service wait times and returning to a coffeehouse environment at its stores. Bloomberg News first reported on the hike, and added that the raise will apply to all corporate staff, workers in manufacturing and distribution, as well as store managers. The hikes for salaried employees were thus far decided by managers, but as the company invests in Niccol's turnaround plan, Starbucks needed to "carefully manage all our other costs", Bloomberg's report said, citing a company spokesperson. Starbucks is also in the midst of contract negotiations with unionized baristas. In April, union delegates voted to reject the coffee chain's latest proposal that guaranteed annual raises of at least 2%, which the Workers United union said did not offer changes to economic benefits such as healthcare or any immediate pay hike. Thoma Bravo nearing deal to acquire software firm Dayforce, source says

(Reuters) -Private equity firm Thoma Bravo is nearing a deal to acquire HR software company Dayforce, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday. Shares of Dayforce, which has seen its stock lose more than 27% of its value so far this year, were up about 29% in late-afternoon trading. Dayforce had a market value of $8.44 billion as of Friday's closing price. Dayforce offers a cloud-based human capital management platform that includes payroll, workforce management, benefits, talent management, compliance and analytics. Thoma Bravo has been actively pursuing software acquisitions this year, betting on the build-out of artificial intelligence and the resilience of recurring revenue in a volatile economy. A deal could be announced as early as this week or possibly next week, the source said. Thoma Bravo and Dayforce did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Bloomberg News, which first reported the potential deal on Sunday, said that while the talks were advanced, they could still be delayed or falter. Dayforce beat Wall Street expectations for second-quarter revenue and raised its annual revenue forecast last week, as more enterprises increase use of AI and cloud-based platforms to run day-to-day operations.
