KUCHING (June 11): The floating solar project at the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) will take 18 to 24 months to complete, said Sarawak Energy Berhad chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.
A Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report cited Sharbini as saying the Bakun project could take longer to complete compared to a similar project at Batang Ai.
The project will be developed in collaboration with China Three Gorges International Ltd (CTGI) and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co Ltd.
'We've asked them to assist us in studying the development of a solar plant at the Bakun HEP, as the site has a very large water body, and we believe it has strong potential for large-scale solar generation.
'That's why we're collaborating with them, along with other partners as well,' he said after attending the 18th International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Conference and Exhibition at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC) in Shanghai, China on Tuesday.
During the event, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, CTGI, and Shanghai Electric.
According to Sharbini, if the project is successfully delivered, it is expected to generate up to 300 megawatts (MW) of energy in its initial phase.
'(This) could become the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia.
'We hope to gradually increase that capacity in the coming years, ultimately positioning Sarawak as a regional leader in floating solar energy,' he added.

Sarawak proposes setting up clubhouse for media practitioners

Abdullah (seated centre) is seen in a group photo at the appreciation ceremony. – Ukas photo KUCHING (Aug 15): A media clubhouse could be established in Sarawak to serve as a dedicated meeting and interaction space for media practitioners. Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Ukas) Datuk Abdullah Saidol said the facility would provide a venue for members of the media to gather and take a break from the demands of daily work. 'At this media clubhouse, it is a place for media practitioners to gather, relax, share ideas, and exchange notes, where there is a leisure area, a small café, a pool table, darts, and other facilities for socialising. 'There is also a bathroom for use after work, especially for those who need to go to another location during the day. This place also provides an opportunity to meet friends, exchange views, and strengthen relationships among media practitioners, and I think this is a good idea,' he said during the Organising Committee Appreciation Ceremony in conjunction with National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 and the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025 here last night. He said there are also plans to develop a recreational area near the media clubhouse. 'Maybe we can find sources other than government funds, for example, receiving sponsorship from several GLCs (government-linked companies) to maintain this facility. We can also consider providing additional space such as a pickleball court or a small field for light sports activities. 'In addition, maybe a mini gym can be provided with facilities such as a treadmill for exercise. This is one of the new ideas that I strongly support,' he added. Abdullah Saidol lead media clubhouse

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Aidel said works are now focused on building the road linking Batang Lupar Bridge to Batang Lingga Bridge and subsequently to Batang Lupar Bridge 2 in Sri Aman. 'The stretch from Batang Lingga Bridge to Batang Lupar Bridge 2 covers about 35km, while the distance from Batang Lupar Bridge to Batang Lingga Bridge is 28km,' he said during a working visit to the Batang Lingga Bridge project site here today. Aidel added that the Sebuyau–Lingga Road is expected to be completed by December 2027. 'The entire project forms part of the Second Trunk Road network, which starts from the Sejingkat Bridge to the Betong/Lidong junction. 'Once completed, it will shorten travel distances and improve traffic flow,' he said. He also revealed plans to construct several new bridges, including Batang Sadong Bridge 2, which will connect the dual carriageway from Batang Lupar Bridge to Batang Sadong Bridge, as well as several iconic bridges at strategic locations across Sarawak. Earlier, Aidel received a briefing on the project status at the Public Works Department (JKR) Sri Aman Divisional Office. He urged that projects which have yet to begin be expedited for the benefit of local communities. Also present were Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong, JKR Sri Aman divisional engineer Lenny Busuri, Lingga district officer Frank Lani, and JKR Sri Aman divisional officers. aidel lariwoo Batang Lingga Bridge

Dr Sim: Full completion of Kuching wastewater Package 2 expected by year-end

Dr Sim (third left) presents a service excellence award to a recipient. At second left is department director Datu Richard Tajan. KUCHING (Aug 13): The Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management Package 2 worth RM750 million is expected to be fully completed by the end of this year, said Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the Deputy Premier said this project will benefit approximately 4,000 premises in Kubah Ria, Pinang Jawa, Laruh Scheme, Heritage Garden, as well as major buildings such as Normah Medical Centre, Baitulmakmur, and Wisma Bapa Malaysia. 'This marks another significant milestone in Sarawak's infrastructure that will enhance the residents' quality of life,' he said at the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak annual dinner last night. The Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister said Sarawak continues to make headway in developing an integrated sewerage management system, with a series of strategic projects benefiting residents across its major towns and cities. He said this includes the Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management System Zone 1, Package A, which has connected 103,076 population equivalent (PE), or approximately 3,089 premises in Satok, Jalan Ajibah Abol, the city centre, Padungan, and Petanak since its commissioning in 2017. In Miri, the Centralised Sewerage System Phase 1—completed last year—has linked 29,494 PE across 721 premises, including those in Saberkas, Boulevard, Waterfront, Wireless Walk, and Jalan Marbau. He noted that the department has also completed two Septic Sludge Treatment Plants in Miri and Sibu at a combined cost of RM40 million. The Miri plant has so far treated 273,192 cubic metres of sludge, while the Sibu facility has processed 287,621 cubic metres, contributing to public health and environmental protection. Looking ahead, he said the department is planning and designing several major initiatives valued at RM1.653 billion. These are the Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management System Zone 1, Package 3 (around 3,000 houses), Miri Centralised Sewerage System Phase 2 (around 4,200 premises), Samarahan Centralised Sewerage System Phase 1 (around 3,000 houses), and the Bintulu Sewerage System Rationalisation. Dr Sim said the progress reflects the Sarawak government's commitment to delivering modern and sustainable sewerage facilities for the well-being of Sarawakians.
