A SpaceX Starship prototype experienced a major anomaly during a test at the company's Starbase facility in Texas late Wednesday night, the company said on social media X.
The rocket was seen bursting into a giant ball of fire during a routine test.
The Starship 36 rocket was undergoing a static fire test at Elon Musk's Starbase site when its nose suddenly burst open, as seen in shocking footage.
The blast caused the screen to flash white for a moment.
When the light faded, a huge fireball spread across the ground while thick black smoke rose into the night sky.
The incident happened around 11 pm. CT on June 18 while the spacecraft was on a test stand.
SpaceX confirmed that all personnel are safe and accounted for, and that a safety perimeter had been maintained throughout the operation.
The company's Starbase team is now working with local officials to secure the test site and the surrounding area. SpaceX said there are no hazards to people in nearby communities.
'We ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safing operations continue,' the company stated.
This was part of preparations for Starship's tenth flight test, although it is unclear how the anomaly will affect future plans.

Shocking! We share DNA with our closest friends, reveals study-- More details here

Your best friend might share your DNA, new study finds The next time you tell your besties, 'I feel like we're related,' or "You're family" science might back you up! A groundbreaking study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in 2018 finds that our friends are genetically more similar to us than strangers— even if they're unrelated-- and this could play a surprising role in how we choose our friends. While it's long been known that people tend to marry or befriend others with similar interests, values, or lifestyles, researchers are now digging deeper into how much of that connection might be because of similar genetics. The study, conducted by researchers from Stanford University, Duke University, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, looked at over 5,000 pairs of adolescent friends using data from Add Health— this is a long-term U.S. study that has tracked students from grades 7 to 12 since the 1994–1995 school year. What researchers found Interestingly, researchers found that friends were more genetically similar to each other than to random individuals in the same population. In fact, the genetic similarity between friends was about two-thirds as strong as that between the average married couple. According to study author Benjamin Domingue, an assistant professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education, this genetic similarity is not as strong as that seen in siblings, but it is still statistically significant as compared to strangers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists: Losing a Hanging Tummy Comes Down To This 1 Thing Health Wellness Journal Watch More Undo Why do we befriend people who have DNAs similar to ours? One possible reason is a concept called social homophily. This theory suggests that people naturally form connections with others who are like them— including traits that may be influenced by genetics. For example, personality traits, energy levels, and even tendencies toward certain habits could be inherited, and that could subtly draw similar people together making them friends. But there's another angle too— social structuring. This is the idea that people form relationships within the environments they inhabit, which themselves may be influenced by genetics. For instance, traits like educational achievement or body mass index (BMI) have both social and genetic reasons. The study found that friends often shared these traits. On the other hand, characteristics like height— which is also genetic— didn't show strong similarities among friends, likely because height doesn't influence our social choices in the same way as education or lifestyle might do. When studying schoolmates, the researchers also discovered something interesting: Even among students who weren't friends, genetic similarities were present— but it was to a lesser degree. Schoolmates were about half as genetically similar as friends, but still more similar than strangers. This indicates that just being part of the same school environment creates genetic clustering. According to Domingue, this finding reinforces how deeply intertwined our genes and our social environments really are, reported the TIME. 'Are individuals actively selecting to be around people who are like them, or is it due to impersonal forces, such as social structures, that we all are affected by?,' Domingue asked. His team believes the answer lies more in the structure— the schools we attend, the neighbourhoods we live in, and the families we grow up in. Kathleen Mullan Harris, co-author and professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, adds that the genetic similarity among schoolmates could be driven by a lot of factors-- from geographic location to parental choices about education. 'It's a complicated equation, and one that researchers need to pay more attention to,' she said. In fact, the researchers believe this study should serve as a wake-up call for geneticists. When studying the influence of genes on traits like educational attainment, it's crucial to consider the social environment. What may appear as a purely genetic effect might actually reflect the shared environment of a school or community. In a nutshell, your friendships may be about more than shared interests— they could be written in your genes, shaped by your surroundings, and driven by the invisible forces of both biology and social structure. ‘GPT-5 is arriving this summer': Sam Altman reveals OpenAI's roadmap

Sam Altman seems to be giving interviews one after the other. On Thursday, June 19, the CEO of OpenAI appeared on the company's podcast featuring an extended conversation with host Andrew Mayne. In the pilot episode, which lasted for about 40 minutes, Altman laid out a roadmap focused on offering a unified experience with the release of GPT-5, which is slated for this summer. When it comes to GPT-5, OpenAI seems to be working on a solution to unify its array of model offerings. Based on Altman's interaction, the AI powerhouse is working towards fixing the company's confusing product line-up with GPT-5. Reportedly, the latest generation of GPT will be essentially a simplification of ChatGPT's diverse models into one streamlined user interface. Talking about OpenAI's next frontier AI model, Altman said that it will probably arrive this summer. The CEO also admitted that the current state of the model choice is a 'whole mess'. He stated that the goal is to get back to a simple progression (GPT-5, GPT-6) and do away with the complex variants inferring to models, that is, GPT-4, GPT-4o, etc. Altman explained that the future goal is to develop a unified model that can handle everything seamlessly, from instant questions to complex, multi-step tasks using reasoning and agent-like tools such as Deep Research. This would essentially eliminate the need for switching modes within the ChatGPT interface. Altman also said that there is an internal debate going on over the naming strategy for the upcoming model to convey clarity. He even briefly mentioned Elon Musk, and how the SpaceX chief tried using his influence in the government to unfairly compete. Altman said that a shift towards delivering a unified user experience was taking place because AI has evolved from being a bot that gives instant answers. He said that he is surprised to find that for hard problems, users are willing to wait for a 'great answer'. According to him, this insight is driving the development of more thoughtful reasoning models that could perform like a human expert, essentially taking its own time before answering. This is Altman's second podcast interview this week. On the Uncapped podcast that was uploaded to YouTube on June 17, Altman said that Meta offered his employees $100 million bonuses to recruit them as a part of the social media giant's recent efforts to ramp up its AI strategy.
