The Indian men's hockey team suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in the FIH Pro League on Saturday, losing 3-2 to Australia in a match where they initially led by two goals through Abhishek's impressive performance.
The defeat adds to their previous losses against Netherlands and Argentina in the tournament.
India started strongly and dominated the first two quarters, with Abhishek scoring in the 8th and 35th minutes to give his team a 2-0 lead. The Indians showed great intent and motivation despite missing their captain and ace dragflicker Harmanpreet Singh, who was resting due to an injury from the previous match against Argentina.
The Kookaburras mounted a strong comeback after halftime, with Nathan Ephraums scoring in the 42nd minute. Joel Rintala and Tom Craig then converted crucial penalty corners in the 56th and 60th minutes respectively to secure the win for Australia.
India's early dominance was evident when Abhishek flicked from the top of the circle after receiving a pass from
Manpreet Singh
for the opening goal. Goalkeeper Suraj Karkera made several important saves, including denying Australia from a penalty corner in the 11th minute and stopping Joel Rintala from close range in the 19th minute.
The second goal came after the break when Sukhjeet Singh dispossessed an Australian player and passed to Abhishek, who executed a reverse hit into the goal. However, Australia's response was swift, with Ephraums scoring off a rebound after Karkera saved Tom Craig's reverse hit.
India had opportunities to extend their lead, including back-to-back penalty corners in the 48th minute, but failed to convert. The Australians intensified their attack in the final ten minutes, earning four consecutive penalty corners.
Rintala successfully converted one of these penalty corners to level the score. In a dramatic finish, with just 42 seconds remaining, Australia earned another penalty corner, which Craig converted through a deflection off Jeremy Hayward's flick to complete their comeback victory.
The loss continues India's difficult run in the tournament, having previously lost twice each to Netherlands and Argentina in their European leg matches. Despite showing improved performance and taking a commanding lead, they were unable to prevent Australia from staging a successful comeback in the second half.

Japan's ASICS to boost India sportswear production to 40% amid import restrictions, executive says
Japanese sportswear giant ASICS will ramp up India manufacturing to 40% from 30% over the next few years to ensure steady supply, a top executive told Reuters, as the country's regulations force global brands to pause imports of footwear. The Indian government has mandated certain standards for various footwear segments, requiring both domestic and foreign manufacturers to obtain quality certifications. ASICS, which has also paused imports, said bringing in footwear from any country is not feasible without government certification. "To address this critical situation, we are strategically developing local production capabilities," ASICS India Managing Director Rajat Khurana said. For financial year 2024-25, ASICS reached 30% local production, a government-mandated threshold that allows foreign brands to operate their own single-brand stores in India. The firm, which operates roughly 125 stores through franchise partners, plans to open its first brand-owned store this year and is scouting locations in and around Delhi and Mumbai , Khurana said. It aims to set up a couple more over the next few years. ASICS, which competes with global rivals including Nike, Adidas , and Skechers USA in India, also plans to open three new franchise stores per month between now and the end of the year. For 2024-25, ASICS projected revenue growth of 35%-37% in India, following a 26% jump in the previous fiscal year that lifted its revenue to 4.28 billion rupees ($49.7 million). The local sporting goods and apparel category is expected to double to $58 billion by 2030 from 2023 levels, according to a 2024 report by consultancy firm Deloitte. Known for its running shoes, ASICS is benefiting from a growing fitness culture in India and rising interest in tennis and pickleball among affluent urban consumers.

F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2025: Winner Russell driving better than ever, but title a long shot
George Russell said he was driving better than ever and ready to fight for a Formula One championship with Mercedes after taking the team's first win of the season in Canada, but this year still looks like a long shot. The Briton, out of contract at the end of 2025 but confident of staying, recognised any title chance this season would probably require the McLaren drivers to make mistakes and drop points. McLaren's Lando Norris and championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri collided in Montreal, with the former retiring from the race while the Australian moved 22 points clear after 10 of 24 rounds. Russell is fourth overall but still a mighty 62 points behind Piastri, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen is third. 'I don't really know how Max and I are so close to those two (McLaren drivers) because they clearly have the most dominant car,' said Russell. 'I think the two of us have been very consistent and getting the maximum result from our packages week in, week out. But I can't imagine them to continue throwing away points in the manner they're doing. 'Of course, we hope that continues to be the case, but I don't foresee us getting in the championship fight through pure pace as Lando did last year. We'll only be there if results like today continue or things like today continue to happen.' ALSO READ | George Russell holds off Max Verstappen for win as McLarens collide Russell was sure Sunday's result would help the negotiations for a new deal, although he had no concerns despite continuing chatter about a possible move for four-time champion Verstappen. 'I know I'm going to be on the grid next year. I feel that I'm driving better than ever. I still feel I've got more in the tank,' said the Briton. 'I feel ready to fight for a world championship.' Russell said he was not talking with anyone other than Mercedes, there was no rush and he planned to stay. 'There haven't been any hard feelings with any of the talks that have been going around, especially around Max,' he added. 'If every driver had no contract for next year, Max would be number one for every single team. And that's understandable. But ultimately, there are two seats for every race team. I know if I continue to perform as I'm doing, my position would not be under threat whatsoever. So, I feel in a good place.' Russell said he and 18-year-old Italian rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli, third on Sunday, were doing the job and 'why would you want to change something that's working?'
