"I'm surprised England talisman isn't a d***head - everyone loves him"

Daily Mirror25-06-2025
The British and Irish Lions squad has spent several weeks together and Ireland's Dan Sheehan has joked that he's been surprised that by Ellis Genge - who he thought could've been a d***head
British and Irish Lions star Dan Sheehan has been taken aback by new team-mate Ellis Genge and admits he's surprised "that he's not a dickhead.' The Ireland hooker and the England prop - rivals in recent years - are now colleagues.
Sheehan has become one of the world's best in his position and is among the frontrunners to start the First Test in Australia. Genge, one of the talismanic leaders for England, is pushing his case to get the nod at prop and the Irishman has been pleasantly surprised by his foe turned friend.

Andy Farrell's Lions squad is Irish heavy but Genge is one of a number of Englishman in the squad and was a standout during Friday night's disappointing loss to Argentina in Dublin.

The Bristol Bears star has been a divisive character and is known for his aggression. Sheehan admits he is someone he and the Irish would target when they clash in the Six Nations. But those battles are put aside this summer with the whole squad embracing each other.
Sheehan said: 'It's mad how fast you can go from despising people to hanging around to go for a coffee with them! It's probably just that rugby blokes are good blokes, you can turn on the hatred when you want it.
'Genge is obviously a passionate, animated player for England and someone who we, as Ireland, would consider as a talisman and someone, in an Irish jersey, we'd need to target.
'He's one person you enjoy having on the team. And he's a funny bloke off the pitch. I think everyone loves him. You can see the passion he brings to meetings, to pitch straight in and scrum. He's one person you enjoy having on your side now. He's very real and says it how it is. He's definitely someone that surprises you that he's not a d***head.'
Genge has long been loved and admired by those who know him intimately. Footage has showed the English star taking a leadership role before Friday's clash, barking orders during the team huddle in the dressing room.
Sheehan watched on for that clash given he had just played in a final with Leinster six days earlier, which saw them win the URC. The Ireland hooker has recently become the forward with the most tries in Six Nations history such is his quality in attack.
He is likely to get his first run out on Saturday when the Lions play their first match on Australian soil against the Western Force in Perth - something he is relishing. He said: 'I feel sometimes if you haven't played yet you feel like a bit of an imposter. I want to feel I can contribute to the jersey just as others have had their chance.'

Kelly Clarkson's ex Brandon Blackstock spent final days at ‘place that felt like home'

Details of Brandon Blackstock's final days have been shared after the talent manager's death, aged 48. A representative confirmed the news in a statement to People following the talent manager's secret cancer diagnosis. Clarkson and Blackstock began dating in 2012 before tying the knot in 2013. They announced their split in 2020, and a bitter divorce battle followed, finalising in 2022. In recent years, Blackstock had settled in Montana to focus on founding Vallet View Rodeo, going 'under the radar' following his career in show business. 'He was at home in Montana,' a source told US Weekly, reflecting on his last weeks alive and death. They said he spent 'more [time] than ever before' with his family while undergoing treatment during the last six months of his life. Clarkson was not caring for Brandon, they said, but she made sure their children, River Rose, 11, and Remington Alexander, nine, spent time with their father. 'She did spend a lot of time traveling with her kids to be with him,' the insider shared. 'He loved having his family with him and loved when the kids would visit,' the source said. 'He loved his animals and that was a passion he shared with his daughter Savannah.' Blackstock also has two children – Savannah, 23, and Seth, 18 – with his ex-wife, Melissa Ashworth, from whom he split in 2012. Savannah, who announced her second pregnancy just weeks before her father's death, was allegedly 'with him almost all the time' in the end. 'She has been having an incredibly difficult time. They were very close. Everyone is in shock,' the insider said. They continued: 'Even a few months back he looked okay. He looked thin but he looked like himself. No one can believe it.' Clarkson, 43, cancelled dates in her Las Vegas residency ahead of the news to 'be fully present' with her children. More Trending 'While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,' she wrote on social media. 'I appreciate your grace, kindness, and understanding.' While Clarkson is yet to comment publicly on the death of her former husband, it's believed she is 'devastated', especially for her children. 'When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake,' a source told People. 'Kelly has always tried to keep things classy. It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well.' Got a story? Good Morning Britain's Richard Madeley makes ITV return and viewers all have same reaction

Good Morning Britain viewers were left unimpressed as Richard Madeley made his return to the ITV show alongside Kate Garraway on Monday Good Morning Britain viewers all said the same thing as Richard Madeley returned to the programme on Monday. During the opening of Monday's (August 11) instalment of the popular ITV show, Richard sat alongside co-presenter Kate Garraway ‌ The TV duo brought audiences up to speed with the day's current affairs. They explored whether motorists aged over 70 might face road bans if they don't pass mandatory vision checks, plus the possibility of installing blade detectors in all British schools. ‌ Richard and Kate also delved into the surge in retail theft nationwide as part of the ongoing headlines. Studio guest Laura Tobin delivered regular meteorological bulletins, whilst Marverine Cole handled the remaining daily headlines. ‌ Whilst tuning in, numerous ITV watchers spotted that this marked Richard's first appearance following his three-week summer holiday, as reported by the Mirror. One viewer posted on Twitter: "Madeley's back," with someone else commenting: "Madeley back on presenting." A third remarked: "Oh Joy. Madeley," whilst a fourth audience member similarly posted: " Richard Madeley back on @gmb." ‌ A fifth supporter mirrored this feeling, stating: "Happy Days, our own Walter Mitty Richard Madeley." The previous month saw Richard confirm his upcoming getaway, just a few days after main presenter Susanna Reid declared her summer hiatus from the programme. GMB has subsequently featured different presenters filling their roles, including Charlotte Hawkins, Ranvir Singh, and Adil Ray. On Monday's programme, August 11, Richard and Kate discussed Former First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon's exclusive ITV News interview before the launch of her forthcoming memoir. In conversation with Julie Etchingham, Nicola pondered on the day she was arrested in 2023, alongside her sexuality and previous legislative decisions. ‌ Yet, GMB viewers seemed less than impressed by the prominence of the interview on the show, with one viewer commenting on Twitter: "Christ, is there any news?". Another chimed in with: "Any other news?" while a third queried: "Why is an interview with Sturgeon a big thing?". ‌ In an excerpt of her new memoir, Frankly, published by The Times, the former first minister of Scotland spoke about some of the hardest moments of her life, as well as conflicted feelings over motherhood and sexuality. The former First Minister has opened up about her arrest, describing in her new book how mentally testing the police investigation was - and saying she thought about disappearing into the North Sea. She said it was one of the toughest days she had ever had when she was arrested and questioned by the police following the arrest of her ex-husband and the Scottish National Party (SNP) treasurer. Peter Murrell, the former chief executive officer of the SNP, was arrested in 2023 and later charged with embezzlement, after his and Ms Sturgeon's home was searched by police looking into what happened to £660,000 of donations to the party.

Moses Itauma reveals decision which led to falling back in love with boxing

The young British heavyweight is destined for greatness in the world of boxing, but has recently detailed how he had to fall back in love with the sport after a rough patch Moses Itauma has revealed coach Ben Davison helped him fully restore his love for the sport of boxing. ‌ The British heavyweight star is set for his toughest fight yet on Saturday night against veteran Dillian Whyte. The 20-year-old has been on a tear as of late and remains unbeaten inside the squared-circle. After announcing himself on the world stage with a destructive win over Mariusz Wach, Itauma followed it up with back-to-back knockout wins over Demsey McKean and Mike Balogun. ‌ That said, it was not all plain sailing for Itauma - who is widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects in boxing's heaviest division. Two years ago, when he made his highly-anticipated debut against Marcel Bode, the young star got off to a flying start and began knocking out people for fun. But the Chatham brawler - who is set to have his fifth fight under the legendary Davison - admitted how he started to 'hate' the sport barely a year after his debut. ‌ 'Being in the ring (sparring) with all these heavyweights Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce, Tyson Fury, Lawrence Okolie, I know that there are levels to boxing and I just felt like I was unable to learn any more,' Itauma said. The Brit admits that, under the guidance of Davison, he found a new side to the sport. 'I don't want to disrespect any of the coaches I tried or did work with. I love and respect them, but with Ben, he taught me a different side to boxing," he continued. 'He taught me there is more to boxing than punch, punch, get punched, punch back, punch, punch, punch. There is actually a whole chess game to this.' The 20-year-old has steamrolled through every opponent that has been put in front of him and has not gone past the second round since his fourth outing. With 10 of his 12 wins coming by way of knockout, he was once tipped to surpass Mike Tyson's record of becoming the youngest heavyweight champion. Whilst that did not come to fruition, Itauma is a champion in the making. But in order to become the best version of himself, he needs to have the right support and the right team. In March 2024, Itauma split from old trainer Alan Smith, despite scoring a brutal victory over Dan Garber not long before. Over the years, he has tried several different trainers and coaches, but never really seemed to click with anyone - until Davison. Davison, Fury's former coach, helps train several high-level boxers, including Anthony Joshua, Fabio Wardley, Leigh Wood, Shabaz Masoud and Pat McCormack. Opening up on the famous boxing coach, Itauma explained: 'What I mean with falling out of love with boxing is, it was kind of like I felt like I reached a barrier and I was unable to break it. ‌ 'That is why I went around searching for a new trainer to get something new. I tried out a lot of coaches and Ben Davison was actually the last one I tried. If I'll be honest, when I went to Ben, I was like he has too many stars in the gym, he won't really have time for me, he won't give me time I need but my brother was like there is no harm in trying Ben Davison. 'And I went there and as I walked through the doors, there is a glass window on the door where you can see inside the gym and Ben has got all my fights up. He is writing in his notepad and he was like, 'you do this, I don't know if you're aware of it, now we need to make you aware of this and do this, this and this,' and I was like, 'rah, none of the other coaches did that.' 'And it was only when I started sparring, he would say, 'if I do this, he will do this and you can capitalise,' and I would go and do it, it would pay off and I'd be like what! Obviously we just clicked from there but the most impressive thing is how you have so many stars in the gym but each individual fighter gets the necessary time.' When is Moses Itauma vs Dillian Whyte? The 'Esports World Cup Fight Week: Moses Itauma vs Dillian Whyte' will take place on Saturday, August 16. The main undercard is due to get underway at around 5:45 pm UK time (12:45 pm ET / 9:45 am PT). The main event ringwalks will likely take place at around 10:20pm UK time (5:20 pm ET / 2:20 pm PT). All of the action will be streamed live on DAZN Pay Per-View. The event is priced at £19.99 in the United Kingdom, $49.99 in the United States, €19.99 in Europe and $49.95 in Australia.
