Monsoon floods hitting key crops, says farmers' body, amid risk to Pakistan's growth target

Arab News27-07-2025
KARACHI: Deadly monsoon floods are devastating Pakistan's standing crops, with cotton the worst hit, a leading farmers' representative warned on Saturday, raising concerns about a potential setback to the government's ambitious 4.2 percent growth target this fiscal year.
Over 270 people, mostly children, have died and hundreds more have been injured since June 26 as intense monsoon rains battered Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Sindh, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and Islamabad, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Around 1,200 houses, 12 bridges and 18 kilometers of road have also been damaged, along with more than 360 livestock killed.
'Cotton is the worst-hit crop, besides rice, maize and mango orchards,' Khalid Mehmood Khokhar, president of the Kissan Ittehad Council (KIC), told Arab News. 'While most of the rice has already been sown, floods have disrupted the remaining cultivation.'
Agriculture contributes nearly 23 percent to Pakistan's GDP and underpins key export sectors. Cotton, in particular, is a vital raw material for Pakistan's textiles, which fetched $18 billion in exports last fiscal year. Pakistan also exported $3.4 billion worth of rice and $308 million in fruits, including mangoes.
The government aims to produce 10.1 million bales of cotton across Punjab, Sindh, KP and Balochistan in the ongoing financial year. But progress has been uneven.
In Sindh, the biggest cotton-producing province, only 65 percent of the sowing target has been met. Punjab, the second-largest grower, has achieved 90 percent of its target.
Pakistan's agriculture sector grew just 0.6 percent during the last fiscal year, dragging overall GDP growth down to 2.7 percent.
Economists warn the impact of the floods could again weigh heavily on national output.
'These floods will definitely impact Pakistan's growth target this year,' Sana Tawfik, head of research at Arif Habib Limited, said. 'This is a serious concern.'
She projects GDP growth to be closer to 3.4 percent this year.
'Agriculture may once again be a major drag,' she added.
Khalid Abdullah, Pakistan's former cotton commissioner, said rainfall was already affecting crop quality.
'Rains and cloudy weather have been consistent in some areas,' he said. 'This not only increases weeds but also flares up fungus attacks. If this weather continues, the cotton seed may start germinating inside the boll, which would mean the crop is gone.'
As of July 15, cotton arrivals were down 33 percent year-on-year, according to Pakistan Cotton Ginners' Association data, with only 297,751 bales entering markets nationwide.
The government has still not shared estimated economic damages from the ongoing monsoon season, though they may run into billions of dollars once again.
Pakistan is one of the world's most climate-vulnerable countries. According to the Economic Survey 2024–25, it has suffered 224 extreme natural disasters, 109 of them floods, since 1980, in which more than 100 million people were affected, causing $36.4 billion in economic losses.
Three years ago, Pakistan experienced heavy monsoon rains that killed about 1,700 people and caused widespread destruction of houses, farms and public infrastructure.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall in parts of Punjab and KP over the coming days, as the monsoon season continues in the country.

Pakistan seeks ‘forward-looking' UK ties, urges greater Commonwealth trade and connectivity

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is seeking a 'forward-looking partnership' with the United Kingdom and remains committed to expanding trade and connectivity within the Commonwealth, according to official statements on Tuesday following high-level meetings in London. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who arrived in the UK on Saturday, is on an official visit aimed at strengthening Pakistan-UK relations, deepening cooperation in digital technology, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and boosting multilateral ties through the Commonwealth. He also inaugurated a pilot project of the Punjab Land Record Authority at the Pakistan High Commission to help members of the diaspora resolve land issues in Pakistan remotely. Dar held separate meetings with British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Commonwealth Secretary‑General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey today after interacting with members of the British-Pakistani community earlier in his visit. 'Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, held a productive meeting today with the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Angela Rayner, in London,' the foreign office said. 'They emphasized the importance of sustained high-level engagement and expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in relations, driven by close people-to-people ties and growing collaboration across multiple domains.' The statement said Dar 'underscored Pakistan's desire to build an inclusive and forward-looking partnership with the United Kingdom.' He also highlighted the contributions of the British-Pakistani diaspora to the UK and extended an invitation to Rayner to visit Islamabad at a mutually convenient time. COMMONWEALTH CONNECTIVITY The Pakistani deputy premier also met Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey over breakfast, congratulating her on her recent appointment and reaffirming Pakistan's deep commitment to the organization as a founding member. Reflecting on their earlier exchange at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, Dar expressed confidence in the Commonwealth's role as a platform to foster shared values and build consensus among member states. 'The DPM/FM assured the Secretary‑General of Pakistan's strong commitment to the Commonwealth's Sustainable Development and Connectivity agendas,' the foreign office said. 'He underscored Pakistan's intent to play a more active role in promoting intra‑Commonwealth trade and development.' 'Additionally,' it added, 'he underscored Pakistan's acute vulnerability to climate change and sought the Commonwealth's support in addressing this pressing challenge.' Dar praised Botchwey's work on the 2025–2030 Commonwealth Strategic Plan and conveyed Pakistan's full support for advancing shared goals of democracy, development, and resilience. He also extended a formal invitation to the Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Islamabad at her earliest convenience.

Pakistan completes clearance of 585 companies under new Iraq-Iran pilgrim travel regime

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's ministry of religious affairs has completed security clearance of 585 companies seeking to organize pilgrimages to holy sites in Iran and Iraq, as authorities move to operationalize a new, tightly regulated travel regime, the ministry said on Tuesday. According to a spokesperson, the ministry has begun scrutinizing applications for registration as Ziyarat Group Organizers (ZGOs), the only entities that will now be authorized to arrange pilgrimages under the restructured system. 'Security clearance of 585 companies has been completed,' the religious affairs ministry spokesman said in a statement. 'Registration certificates for pilgrimage companies that complete the required documentation are expected to be issued soon.' The ministry said 95 new companies had submitted documents during the most recent extension period. Document submission from existing companies will continue until Aug. 31, while new firms can apply until Sept. 10. The overhaul follows Islamabad's decision last month to abolish the decades-old Salar system, in which private caravan leaders managed pilgrim travel. The move came after officials confirmed that around 40,000 Pakistani citizens had overstayed or gone missing in Iran, Iraq, and Syria over the past decade. The government has also barred overland travel for this year's Arbaeen pilgrimage, citing militant threats in the restive Balochistan province bordering Iran, meaning all journeys to Iraq and Iran will be arranged through registered tour operators and air travel only. Under the new Ziyarat Management Policy, all pilgrimages must be organized through licensed groups, with operators directly responsible for ensuring that all travelers return on time. Companies that fail to meet requirements face license cancelation, the ministry has said. Authorities say the policy aims to address long-standing security and migration concerns flagged by host governments, while restoring credibility to Pakistan's management of religious tourism.

Pakistan stock market hits 150,000 points for first time

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's stock market reached a historic milestone on Monday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index closing at 150,000 points for the first time in its history, a senior government adviser said. Khurram Schehzad, adviser to the finance minister, wrote on X that the rise reflected growing investor confidence, homegrown reforms, and a more positive macroeconomic outlook. 'Pakistan Stock Exchange Makes New History – Reaches 150,000 Points Mark,' Schehzad said in his post, noting that the index's growth had sharply accelerated over the past decade. 'First 50,000 took 26 years (1991-2017). Second 50,000 took 8 years (2017-2024). Third 50,000 took just 10 months (Nov 2024–Aug 2025),' he wrote. Schehzad also highlighted other achievements, including the return of large-cap valuations and a surge in investor participation: 'Total Billion Dollar+ Valuation Companies at PSX are now 16 – highest after 15 in 2018, and only 3 in 2022,' he said, adding that 'Number of new investors added in last one year – 73,000, up 22 percent YoY, highest in a single year! Total investors at Pakistan's public markets now over one million (99 percent with PSX + Mutual Funds).' The adviser attributed the performance to reforms and improved credibility. Schehzad said Pakistan's improving global credibility, structural reforms and a stronger macroeconomic outlook were fueling investor confidence and driving the market's rise. The rally comes amid signs of stabilization in Pakistan's economy after securing a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout in September 2024 and recent upgrades by international ratings agencies. Inflation has eased from a peak of 38 percent in 2023 to 4.1 percent in July 2025, while the rupee has stabilized against the dollar.
