Huckabee visits Christian church in West Bank that was target of arson attack

Yahoo20-07-2025
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on Saturday visited a Christian village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and urged accountability for an attack on an ancient church, which residents have blamed on Israeli settlers. In early July, the village of Taybeh was hit by an arson attack in the area of the ruins of the Byzantine-era Church of Saint George, which dates back to the fifth century. Residents blamed settlers for the fire, which comes as violence soars in the West Bank and last week saw an American-Palestinian man killed near Ramallah.
Israel has so far not responded to CBS News' requests for information about the incident.
Huckabee, an evangelical Christian and staunch advocate for Israel, said his trip to Taybeh aimed to "express solidarity with the people who just want to live their lives in peace, to be able to go to their own land, to be able to go to their place of worship."
"It doesn't matter whether it's a mosque, a church, a synagogue," he told reporters. "It's unacceptable to commit an act of sacrilege by desecrating a place that is supposed to be a place of worship." "We will certainly insist that those who carry out acts of terror and violence in Taybeh or anywhere be found, be prosecuted, not just reprimanded. That's not enough," he said. "People need to pay a price for doing something that destroys that which belongs not just to other people, but that which belongs to God." In the villages and communities around Taybeh, Palestinian authorities reported that settlers had killed three people and damaged or destroyed multiple water sources in the past two weeks alone. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967 and violence has surged in the territory since the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, 2023, that triggered the Israel-Hamas war. Huckabee, who has for years been an outspoken supporter of Jewish settlement in the Palestinian territories, on Tuesday demanded an aggressive investigation and consequences after settlers beat to death a Palestinian-American in the West Bank. It was a sign of rare public pressure against U.S. ally Israel by the Trump's administration.

Former senior Shin Bet official: 'This is the only way Israel can bring the hostages back'

In an interview with Maariv, former Shin Bet official, Yossi Amrusi, criticizes Israel's current negotiation strategy and lays out his own plan to bring the hostages home. As negotiations to release the hostages continue to stall and intelligence reports warn of a prolonged deadlock, Yossi Amrusi, a former senior Shin Bet official, voiced strong criticism of Israel's current strategy toward Hamas in a recent interview with Maariv. 'Israel needs to declare that it is no longer willing to conduct negotiations in this way,' Amrusi stated, calling for a strategic shift in Israel's negotiation tactics. According to Amrusi, Hamas benefits from stalling: 'A clever Persian trader once told me in the market: 'You'll win the deal when you're willing to lose it.' And why? For several reasons. One, Hamas benefits from dragging things out. It continues to hold the key to its survival, and in the meantime, who knows what could happen? European pressure, a false starvation campaign, Trump might flip on Israel, internal pressure on the government. All of these, and each on its own, are good for them.' Amrusi also expressed doubt regarding the effectiveness of the mediators working with Hamas, 'I'm not sure that Qatar, the mediator, even has the ability to decide anything. And it's not even certain they have communication with Hamas's internal leadership for consultations and decision-making." "It's important to ask: is there anyone in Hamas' Gaza who can make decisions? Who has control over those holding the hostages? Doe they even know where they are and what condition they're in? After all, some of the hostages aren't even in their hands…' 'I've always said Hamas will release the hostages when we force them to release them," he went on to argue, "but we don't know how to do that. Military pressure isn't being applied to its full extent, and our soldiers' hands are pretty tied. We're bringing in humanitarian aid that gives Hamas life – oxygen, fuel, and money.' 'Government constraints and fears are holding back the opening of immigration offices and the establishment of humanitarian zones. We simply don't know how to win,' he warned. Amrusi's twofold solution According to Amrusi, the solution lies in two parallel actions: 'Today, in my estimation, Israel must declare that it is no longer willing to negotiate as it has been. Then, it must do two things simultaneously." "First, push as much as it can for separating Gazans from Hamas through designated humanitarian zones. That will also lead to control over humanitarian aid, so that it doesn't reach Hamas. And second, since it is estimated that hostage locations are known – we must conduct local negotiations with those holding the hostages. Offer money and their lives in exchange for the hostages.' Update: Date: Title: Aid trickled into Gaza by this weekend as Israel paused fighting in some areas. Here's the latest Content: Our coverage of developments in Gaza has resumed as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is expected to restart a tactical pause in fighting parts of the enclave. Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again denied Palestinians in Gaza face starvation. 'There is no policy of starvation in Gaza, and there is no starvation in Gaza,' Netanyahu claimed. There were at least 63 malnutrition-related deaths in Gaza this month, precipitated by Israel's blockade of supplies, according to the World Health Organization. Defense Minister discusses potential for renewed campaign against Iran

Katz emphasized maintaining Israel's air superiority from Operation Rising Lion and called for an enforcement plan to prevent Iran's nuclear and missile program restoration. Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated on Tuesday evening that Israel may consider resuming its campaign against Iran, during a situation assessment held with senior military leaders. The meeting included key military figures such as Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Eyal Zamir, Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Tamir Yadai, and heads of the IDF Intelligence Directorate, as well as additional IDF commanders and representatives from the Mossad and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency). Katz stressed the importance of maintaining Israel's air superiority, which was achieved during Operation Rising Lion. He called for the development of an effective enforcement plan to prevent Iran from restoring its nuclear and missile programs. Additionally, Katz confirmed the IDF's stance consistent with the policy he previously outlined, stressing that the main goals of the current Israel-Hamas War are the return of all hostages and the defeat of Hamas. Regional security developments On regional security, Katz pointed out that two fronts remain open: Gaza and Yemen. He stressed that action must be taken to resolve these conflicts in alignment with Israel's aggressive offensive policy, which has been successful in confronting threats from Iran, Lebanon, and Syria. Katz further discussed the ongoing deployment of IDF soldiers, particularly at critical control points and security zones in Syria and Lebanon. He highlighted that Israel's presence in these areas is essential for protecting Israeli communities. He also stressed that the IDF must prepare for any potential future security challenges. IDF operations in the West Bank Regarding the West Bank, Katz praised the IDF's offensive operations in the northern Samaria refugee camps, which he described as successful. He instructed the IDF to maintain its presence in these camps and be prepared for further forceful action if needed, especially in response to potential new terrorist strongholds. Katz's warning to Iran In early July, at an IAF pilot graduation ceremony, Katz issued a direct warning to Iran. He stated that the graduates represent the long arm of the IDF, capable of striking anywhere in Iran—from Tehran to Isfahan to Tabriz, The Jerusalem Post previously reported. Katz described the graduates as 'a direct message to the dictator [Iranian Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei and to the ayatollahs in Iran about the destructive power of the air force should Iran test the Jewish state's patience,' he said. 'There is no place where Iranian officials who harm Israel can hide,' he concluded. Yonah Jeremy Bob contributed to this report. Solve the daily Crossword
