P. Krishnaveni, an 81-year old retired school teacher, remembers how her village in Theni district in Tamil Nadu was stratified 70 years ago. Each caste had its own street. Scheduled Castes (SCs) lived away from the village and each street in an SC neighbourhood was named after a particular SC sub-caste, she says.
Similarly, Sarojini Devi, a home-maker in her late sixties, who is from another village in the same district, recalls the 13 SC families who lived farther away from the main village. She says SC dwellings came to be referred to as 'colonies' after the law made it illegal to refer to their place of dwelling with caste names.
Now, caste Hindus may have to stop using that term. On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced in the Legislative Assembly that steps will be taken to remove the caste-coded word, in Tamil Nadu's context, from official government documents and public use. The word 'colony', which has become a slur to denote the neighbourhoods inhabited by SCs, is still used in most villages across the State. While other castes live on the main streets of the villages, SCs live in 'colonies', away from them.
While the intention may be laudable, Dalit activists say the government has been unable to effectively implement its policy of removing caste signifiers. 'Earlier, 'colony' was associated with colonial rule and was used in a derogatory sense to describe the exploitation of backward or weaker peoples by a dominant power,' says Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi general secretary and Villupuram MP, D. Ravikumar. 'After Independence, the word came to be used to identify the habitations of Dalits, indirectly marking these settlements as those of an enslaved people.' Mr. Ravikumar says while his party welcomes Mr. Stalin's announcement, it is important to see what the Government Order says.
Writer and historian Stalin Rajangam says the word 'colony' has different meanings in urban and rural areas. 'In cities, colonies are a part of modernity. There is, for instance, an Electricity Board colony. In the rural context, colonies are exclusively used to refer to Dalit neighbourhoods. There is confusion over whether the word itself is problematic. I see this move as a continuation of Dravidian identity politics — because it takes the easy way out without making any serious effort to change the separation of 'Ooru and 'Cheri' (non-Dalit and Dalit neighbhourhoods),' he says. Mr. Rajangam also wonders whether the names of neighbourhoods named after dominant and privileged castes — for instance, Naidupuram — will ever be renamed. 'I don't oppose this announcement, but I don't think this is a significant step towards annihilating caste,' he says.
Mr. Ravikumar recalls that in 1978, the AIADMK government, headed by its founder and then Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, had initiated efforts to drop the caste names of leaders and prominent personalities from the boards of streets named after them on account of Periyar's birth centenary celebrations. However, the policy has never been implemented effectively.
In August 2021, Mr. Ravikumar wrote a letter to Mr. Stalin urging him to reinforce the Government Order published in 1978. 'Apart from the name boards set up by the Tamil Nadu government, the name boards being set up by private individuals for new neighbourhoods shouldn't have caste names. Similarly, caste names should be removed from the names of educational institutions and restaurants,' he wrote in the letter. He adds that when caste names are not removed from street names and become part of official documents such as Aadhaar and passports, they help people easily ascertain the caste identities of people.
In the Dravidian era, SCs have achieved economic growth and have made significant strides in education, but continue to face violence and discrimination from caste Hindus. Tamil Nadu recorded a rise in crimes against SCs and Scheduled Tribes between 2000 and 2022. In this context, the move to remove the word 'colony' can be seen in positive light only if the government addresses other urgent demands, such as the enactment of a law to protect inter-caste couples from violence. In addition to cosmetic attempts, it is crucial that the government makes comprehensive efforts to address the myriad issues of SCs today.,

BJP and JD-(U) slam Lalu Prasad for allegedly insulting Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal-(United) leaders on Saturday slammed the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad for allegedly insulting Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar by placing a portrait of the Dalit icon at his feet. The BJP media cell circulated the video of Mr. Prasad, in which the ailing leader can be seen seated on a couch with his feet placed on a sofa nearby. A supporter enters the room carrying the portrait and places it close to Mr. Prasad's feet before greeting him on his 78th birthday on June 11, 2025. 'It is very unfortunate that such a shameful act took place in democracy. The act proves that he considers himself a king and does not have any respect for anyone,' said BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary while addressing the presspersons at his official residence in Patna. While showing the video on a tab, Mr. Choudhary further said, 'Not giving respect to anyone and insulting everyone is in the DNA of Lalu Prasad. If there is anyone who has always insulted backward, extremely backward and Adivasi communities, it is the former Chief Minister Of Bihar, Lalu Prasad. His act also proves that he hates dalits.' He pointed out that Mr. Prasad does not evenrespect the party workers and leaders. BJP leader and another Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha lashed out at Mr. Prasad terming him a social criminal. Bihar JD-(U) State president Umesh Singh Kushwaha also issued a statement saying that the insult of Dr. Ambedkar's picture by Mr. Prasad is a direct attack on the self-respect of the Bahujan Samaj and exposes the real mentality of RJD and the truth of its pseudo social justice. 'Lalu Prasad has once again proved that he is a symbol of political feudalism. For him, socialism is just an election slogan, which he has been using just to confuse the common people and enjoy the pleasures of power. It is meaningless to expect respect for Baba Saheb's ideas from a party where democracy and ideology are a mere show,' Mr. Kushwaha said. The JD-(U) State president asserted that people of Bihar will neither accept the arrogance of the Lalu family, nor will they ever forgive the insult of a great man like Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. He alleged that hundreds of Dalits became victims of caste massacre during Lalu-Rabri rule. 'Dalit, backward and deprived society were most affected by the anarchy during the 15 years of Jungle Raj. These incidents were carried out by power-protected criminals under the nose of the Lalu family, which clearly shows that their mentality has been to suppress the deprived society from the very beginning,' Mr. Kushwaha said.

West Bengal clashes: Senior police officers in Rabindra Nagar transferred post-violence

Kolkata Senior police officers at the Rabindra Nagar Police Station in the Maheshtala area have been transferred after communal clashes shook the area three days ago. Forty people were arrested after the clashes, and several police personnel and locals were injured during the violence on June 11. Amidst rising criticism about the clashes from Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, officers Kamrujjaman Molla, Sub Divisional Police Officer, and Mukul Mia, Officer-in-Charge of Rabindra Nagar Police Station, were shifted to new posts. Government sources claimed that these were routine transfers and had no relation to the clashes. Mr. Molla was shifted to the third battalion of the West Bengal Armed Police, and Mr. Mia was transferred to the Darjeeling district in North Bengal. According to an official order on Friday (June 13), Sujan Kumar Roy, previously posted as the Circle Inspector in Ratua, Malda district, will now be the IC at Rabindra Nagar. Syed Rezaul Kabir, who previously served as the IC of Rajarhat Police Station under Bidhannagar City Police, will be the new SDPO. The incident of violence occurred just metres away from Rabindra Nagar Police Station. However, police officials stated that the deployment at the time was insufficient to contain what they described as a 'frantic' mob. Many among the mob charged at the police and injured them. However, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has accused the police of 'inaction'. On Saturday (June 14), Mr. Adhikari said that a lot of shops were looted, many locals were injured, and businesses were ruined in the clashes. 'IC Mukul Mia is complacent with the ruling party, even though he is a public servant. That is why the people affected in the clashes have refused to take compensation from the police who have failed to protect them,' Mr. Adhikari claimed. He also said that 23 victims from the clash-affected areas of Rabindra Nagar have received compensation from the BJP leader. BJP State President and Lok Sabha MP Sukanta Majumdar said that the transfer of the police officers was 'a blatant act of deception — a dirty attempt to deflect public outrage while shielding the real culprits.' He also called the police inactive and accused that the transfer was a 'drama' staged by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. West Bengal Police have consistently maintained that clashes were between two groups due to a dispute over setting up a stall and have asked people not to spread misinformation. However, Mr. Adhikari has alleged that the violence was 'communal' and shops of 'Hindus' were targeted. He moved court to get central forces deployed in the violence-hit area and sought Governor C.V. Ananda Bose's intervention. The area is now under heavy police deployment. A large contingent of the Rapid Action Force is present as the locality still simmers in the aftermath of the clashes. Only weeks earlier, in April, the State witnessed similar communal violence in Samserganj and Dhuliyan in Murshidabad district, which claimed three lives and left hundreds homeless.

‘Govt giving fake property letters'

Ludhiana: SAD candidate for West bypoll, advocate Parupkar Singh Ghumman, Saturday launched a scathing attack on AAP-led Punjab govt and party candidate, Sanjeev Arora, over the distribution of "fake" provisional letters in "lal lakir" areas. Challenging the govt to show one legal registry, he alleged the scheme was a lie backed by illegal paperwork and zero legal standing. He said the SC had, till date, not allowed any registration or ownership claims in "lal lakir" areas but the AAP govt was handing out papers with no legal value, misleading thousands of innocent families. Ghumman claimed that during the 2022 state polls, former Congress MLAs also distributed cheques to households but when people reached banks, the cheques bounced and they were fined. "Sanjeev Arora has not delivered anything real as Rajya Sabha MP, and now he wants to mislead Ludhiana West as an MLA," he said, adding that people need permanent legal solutions, not political stunts. tnn Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
