Thailand's Engfa Waraha & Dream Thanika Jenjesda Want ‘Lady Bee' To Re-Define The Female Gaze In Thai Filmmaking — Cannes Studio
Upcoming Thai film Lady Bee presents a re-imagining of the 1960s Thai novel 'The Story of Jan Dara,' with popular singer-actress Engfa Waraha headlining the film as the enigmatic Lady Boonleung.
In an interview at Deadline's Cannes studio, Waraha, alongside the film's co-writer and co-director Dream Thanika Jenjesda, shared that they are excited to present a new adaptation of the story — which has been remade before — from a female perspective for the first time.

Starring in just her second feature film after box office hit Paradise of Thorns, Waraha said, 'There's a lot of pressure because Paradise of Thorns was so well-received. This is my second role and I'm under pressure to do my best. I want to challenge myself as an actor and not just a star.'
Waraha won the Best Actress prize at the 2025 Thailand Box Office Awards for her role in family drama feature The Paradise of Thorns.
Besides acting, Waraha has also ventured into singing, appearing in the seventh season of The Voice Thailand. She revealed that the late legendary Thai singer Pumpuang is her biggest singing inspiration.
On her singing career, Waraha said, 'It was one of my biggest dreams and whenever I received good opportunities, I did my best to be the best I could.'
Set to begin principal photography in late-2025, Lady Bee follows Lady Boonleung, a woman unbound by the morality or power structures of her time and driven by a yearning for connection.
'My goal is not to be too vogue, vocal or preachy about it,' said co-writer and co-director Jenjesda. 'In Thailand, we're still a little bit conservative, a little bit suppressed in these of having male-dominated leading roles.'
She named directors Sofia Coppola and Wim Wenders among her filmmaking inspirations.
Lady Bee will also be co-directed by Rutaiwan Wongsirasawad (Dalah), with Julien Favre also onboard as co-writer. Pantham Thongsang will produce the film.
Looking ahead, Waraha has set her sights overseas too. 'I want more opportunities at an international level, perhaps taking a role alongside a Hollywood movie star or well-known international stars,' said Waraha. 'I want to challenge my English-speaking abilities.'
Lady Bee is represented by Singapore-based sales company Mokster Films.

With its unforgettable character design and hilarious episodes, Crayon Shin Chan is a popular figure in the cartoon world. With the Crayon Shin Chan Pop-up Cafe opening on 19 Jun, you can see him jiggling away in real life. The pop-up cafe will be taking place at Wong Fufu, which you may remember from last year's Miffy Hotpot event. The Tater Tots with Taiwan Mochi Balls (S$13.90). Fried to a perfect golden brown, these spheres of sweet potato are crisp on the outside and springy within. Served in the adorable box of Shin Chan's favourite snacks are the Sweet Potato Fries with Taiwan Plum Powder (S$12.90) and Truffle Fries with Truffle Mayo Dip (S$14.90). Take your pick of sweet-and-sour or savoury creaminess, but don't forget to snap a pic before you devour it all! ‘The Phoenician Scheme' Reviews: Do Critics Buy Into Wes Anderson's Comedy?

Director Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme — starring Benicio Del Toro, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson and Bryan Cranston — is now in theaters. How are critics receiving the film? Rated PG-13, The Phoenician Scheme opened in limited release on May 31 before expanding to a wide release on Friday. Also starring Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend and Hope Davis, The Phoenician Scheme held its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in May. The logline for The Phoenician Scheme reads, "The story of a family and a family business." Featuring a screenplay by Anderson and Roman Coppola, the offbeat comedy follows the story of European businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (Del Toro) and his only daughter and sole heir, a nun named Sister Liesel (Threapleton), who are each being targeted by assassins and schemers. As of Friday, Rotten Tomatoes critics have collectively given The Phoenician Scheme a 78% 'fresh' rating based on 185 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, 'A caper made with all the intricacy of a Rube Goldberg machine, The Phoenician Scheme doesn't deviate from Wes Anderson's increasingly ornate style but delivers the formula with mannered delicacy.' Audiences on RT gave the film a 73% 'fresh' score on the critic aggregation site's Popcornmeter based on 100-plus verified user ratings. Kyle Smith of The Wall Street Journal is among the top critics on RT who gives The Phoenician Scheme a 'fresh' rating on RT, writing, 'Given that The Phoenician Scheme essentially concludes by saying, as some of the director's other movies did, 'Forgive your ridiculous dad for his failings,' its major attraction is the whimsy with which it is decorated, or suffused, or infested.' Dana Stevens of Slate also gives The Phoenician Scheme a 'rotten' rating on RT, writing, 'For all its exquisite boxes-within-boxes compositions and cleverly designed sets, this whole movie unfolded for me as if behind a thick pane of emotion-proof glass.' Nicholas Barber of the BBC wasn't impressed by the film, either, writing in his 'rotten' take on RT, 'Some directors boast that they make the films that they want to see, and they don't care about pleasing anyone else. In the case of The Phoenician Scheme, it feels as if Anderson and his team were enjoying it more than audiences ever will.' The Phoenician Scheme is now playing in theaters in wide release.

When The Phoenician Scheme comes to the home entertainment market, its first stop will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand. The Phoenician Scheme's studio, Focus Features, generally has a month window between the time its films open wide in theaters and arrive on PVOD. For example, the studio's acclaimed papal thriller, Conclave, opened in theaters on Oct. 25, 2024, and arrived on PVOD just over a month later, on Nov. 25. In addition, Focus Features' hit vampire thriller, Nosferatu, premiered in theaters on Dec. 24, 2024, and made its PVOD debut just under a month later, on Jan. 21. If The Phoenician Scheme follows the same release pattern, then viewers can expect the film to arrive on PVOD sometime around July 6, since new film titles generally debut on digital streaming on Tuesdays.
