Stock markets surge in early trade tracking rally in global peers, RBI's jumbo rate cut Mumbai

Indian Express2 hours ago

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty surged in early trade on Monday tracking a rally in global markets and upbeat investors' sentiment following the Reserve Bank's jumbo rate cut of 50 basis points.
The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 480.01 points to 82,669 in early trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty surged 157.05 points to 25,160.10
From the Sensex firms, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Motors, Axis Bank, Maruti, Infosys, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra and Bajaj Finance were the biggest gainers.
However, Bharti Airtel, Eternal, ICICI Bank, Adani Ports and Tata Steel were the laggards.
In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi, Japan's Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng were trading in the positive territory.
US markets ended sharply higher on Friday.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 1,009.71 crore on Friday, according to exchange data.
'The monetary bazooka fired by the RBI on Friday will keep the market spirits alive in the near-term. But this is not sufficient to sustain the rally triggered on Friday. More important is the trend in earnings growth. Q4 results indicate better earnings growth for midcaps. But large and small caps continue to struggle,' VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, said.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.11 per cent to USD 66.40 a barrel.
'Nifty bulls are back in action after the RBI surprised with a jumbo 50 bps rate cut, igniting hopes of an economic boost and lower EMIs for the common man. This move, along with Wall Street's rally above the 6,000 mark and renewed US-China trade optimism, has triggered a wave of buying,' Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said.
On Friday, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended the day higher by 746.95 points or 0.92 per cent at 82,188.99. The Nifty reclaimed the 25,000-level and climbed 252.15 points or 1.02 per cent to settle at 25,003.05.

HDFC Bank and BoB cut lending rates after RBI repo rate slash

Following the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) recent decision to reduce the policy repo rate by 50 basis points, key changes in lending rates have been announced by key financial Bank of Baroda (BoB), has responded by slashing its benchmark lending rate linked to the repo rate by the full 50 basis points. This adjustment aligns with the RBI's new repo rate of 5.5%, bringing BoB's Repo Linked Lending Rate (RLLR) down to 8.15%. This change, effective from June 7, marks a key step in transmitting the central bank's policy decisions to the banking sector, as confirmed by a statement from AT HDFC BANKIn a parallel move, HDFC Bank has announced a reduction in its Marginal Cost of Funds-based Lending Rates (MCLR) by 10 basis points across various tenures. These changes, effective from June 7, lower the overnight and one-month MCLR to 8.90%, the three-month rate to 8.95%, and the six-month and one-year MCLRs to 9.05%. This adjustment aims to benefit borrowers with loans linked to these benchmarks, offering more affordable borrowing options in line with the RBI's monetary easing ECONOMIC CONTEXTThe RBI's decision to cut the repo rate by a larger-than-expected margin comes as part of a broader strategy to stimulate the economy. The central bank also reduced the cash reserve ratio by 100 basis points, enhancing liquidity by adding Rs 2.5 lakh crore to the banking move is intended to encourage lending and bolster economic activity, particularly in the wake of past rate cuts in February and can expect EMIs on home loans, personal loans, and other credit products to come down slightly, offering a bit of breathing space amid rising living costs. India central banks large rate cut squeezes forward premiums, leaves rupee vulnerable, analysts say

By Nimesh Vora and Jaspreet Kalra MUMBAI, June 9 (Reuters) - The Reserve Bank of India's surprise outsized rate cut last week will leave the rupee vulnerable to further depreciation by pressuring already depressed foreign exchange forward premiums, several analysts said on Monday. The rupee has underperformed its Asian peers in 2025 amid weak capital flows. A narrowing interest rate differential — with the U.S. Federal Reserve moving slower than the RBI in cutting rates — suggests the Indian currency may continue to lag. The 1-month U.S. dollar/rupee forward premium — typically more sensitive to liquidity conditions — fell to 7.5 paisa, its lowest level since November. Meanwhile, the 1-year premium, which is more responsive to rate differential between the U.S. and India, declined to 1.5250 rupees, marking its lowest level in nearly a year. A drop in dollar/rupee forward premiums makes the rupee less attractive for carry trades, and diminishes the incentive for exporters to hedge future receivables. At the same time, it raises the likelihood that importers—who typically hedge near-term payment obligations—will step up their hedging activity. The decline in premiums - a less favourable rate differential between the U.S. and India - could leave the rupee open to sharper depreciation. Against the backdrop of benign inflation and the need to support growth, the Reserve Bank of India last Friday delivered a larger-than-expected 50 basis point rate (bps) cut, exceeding the 25 bps anticipated by economists. In a further easing move, the central bank slashed the cash reserve ratio for banks. "One thing the rupee had going for it is that it offered attractive carry ... with the 50-bps rate cut from the RBI, carry attraction has been reduced," Mitul Kotecha, head of FX and EM macro strategy Asia at Barclays, adding that in an environment where investors are again focussed on carry, the rupee's appeal has been diminished. Falling premiums can be a "mild added headwind" for the rupee amid globally elevated yields, Dhiraj Nim, FX strategist at ANZ Research, said, and pointed out that if India growth data weaken, there could be scope for one more rate cut. Stock market outlook: Nifty 50 likely to touch 25,500 in coming weeks amid bullish trend — key levels to watch

Stock market today: Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, extended their gains for the fourth straight session on Monday, buoyed by robust U.S. employment data, positive developments in India-U.S. trade negotiations, and supportive measures from the Reserve Bank of India. At around 9:19 am, the BSE Sensex advanced 423 points (0.52%) to reach 82,618, while the Nifty50 increased by 130 points (0.52%) to 24,132. Meanwhile, Nifty Bank climbed more than 0.4% to reach an all-time high of 57,049, supported by strong performances from Kotak Bank, IDFC First Bank, Canara Bank, and PNB. On Friday, both indices climbed by almost 1% following the RBI's unexpected move to cut the repo rate by 50 basis points and lower the cash reserve ratio (CRR) for banks by 100 basis points, indicating a more aggressive monetary effort to boost economic growth. "The Nifty ended above 25000 on Friday, as sentiment was boosted by RBI's actions that included a larger-than-expected 50 bps cut to the repo rate and a 100 bps cut to the cash reserve ratio (CRR). Technically speaking, Friday's jump was able to negate the prior day's somewhat "weak" close, and earlier, the test of 24672, which we had mentioned, held successfully. Getting past 25116 is the only thing that bulls need to do from hereon, and a break of 25260 will open the doors toward 25800 based on the pennant that seems to be complete. For the day, resistance and support lie at 25120 and 24820 respectively. Asian equities are a tailwind for today," said Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities. The Nifty 50 closed at 25,003.05, registering a 1.02% gain over the previous week close. The weekly chart reflects a sideways-to-bullish setup, as the index managed to close above the key psychological level of 25,000, indicating a potentially bullish outlook in the near term, according to Choice Broking. 'In terms of levels, Nifty has immediate support at 25,000 and 24,800, which could offer strong buying opportunities for traders on dips. Resistance is expected at 25,100 and 25,300, with the latter acting as a key hurdle. A sustained breakout above 25,300 could trigger a bullish rally, targeting 25,500 and 25,700 in the coming weeks,' said the firm in a note. Bias: Sideways to Bullish The Bank Nifty index closed at 56,578.40, near record high levels, registering a 1.49% gain over the previous week's close. The weekly chart indicates buying from lower levels, and notably, the index has managed to sustain above the 56,500 mark. This buying interest suggests a potential continuation of bullish sentiment, with strong demand emerging on dips, indicating a sideways to bullish phase in the near term, according to the brokerage firm. ' The Bank Nifty index is likely to face significant resistance in the 57,000–57,500 range. If the index continues to move higher, HDFCBANK & AXISBANK from the private banking sector is expected to support the uptrend. Similarly, in the public sector banking space, SBIN is anticipated to show strength,' the firm said. Bias- Sideways to Bullish Disclaimer: This story is for educational purposes only.
