Al Nayyir out to make most of Marathon opportunity

Leader Live03-07-2025
Narrowly beaten by Vauban on his first start for trainer Tom Clover in last summer's Lonsdale Cup at York, the seven-year-old spent the winter months abroad, finishing fifth in the Red Sea Turf Handicap in Saudi Arabia and then eighth in Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan.
He was not disgraced when third behind Trawlerman and Coltrane on his return to British action in the Henry II Stakes in late May and takes the latter on again at Listed level on the eve of the Coral-Eclipse.
Clover said: 'He seems to be in good shape, so I hope he'll run a nice race. He's training well and we're looking forward to running him.
'Trawlerman was obviously impressive (at Royal Ascot) and I'd like to think we've come forward a touch from that run. If we're there or thereabouts that would be great.
'I just felt he stalled a little bit last time out perhaps and we thought the cheekpieces might just sharpen him up a bit, we'll see.'
Andrew Balding's Coltrane is sent back into battle just over a fortnight after finishing fifth in the Gold Cup, while Alan King has declared his stable star Trueshan, who has not been seen in competitive action since finishing fourth in the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier at ParisLongchamp in late May.
However, his participation is far from certain, with the prevailing fast ground once again a concern.
'I don't think he'll run,' said King.
'He's in very good shape – he's been in good shape all year. I just hoped we'd get a bit more rain on Wednesday morning, which they missed.
'I don't think he'll run, but we'll make a decision on Friday morning.'
Listed honours are also up for grabs in the preceding Davies Insurance Solutions Gala Stakes, which sees William Knight's stable stalwart Checkandchallenge test his powers against the Balding-trained Windlord and Cash from David Simcock's yard, among others.
Windlord, owned by Juddmonte, has been deployed as a pacemaker for the brilliant Field Of Gold in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes on his last two starts and now returns to a venue where he has smart form hoping to make the most of his sights being lowered.

Evidence Man Utd's £74m Benjamin Sesko deal isn't a total gamble as Jude Bellingham beaten

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, and one of the striker's statistics that beats out Jude Bellingham may reassure fans that the move is no gamble Incoming Manchester United recruit Benjamin Sesko is the top scorer under the age of 23 in Europe's five biggest leagues over the past two seasons. Ruben Amorim appears to be getting a new No. 9 in the form of RB Leipzig star Sesko, who is the subject of a £65.3million bid from the Red Devils, which could rise to nearly £74m if certain add-ons are achieved. ‌ Premier League rivals Newcastle have also shown interest in the striker and have put forward a more lucrative proposal than United's, but the 22-year-old's preference is a move to Old Trafford. ‌ Sesko is currently training separately from his Leipzig colleagues, according to a statement released by his club, and while some have expressed doubts about his abilities and hefty price tag, his goal-scoring statistics speak for themselves. ‌ Over the last two seasons, no player under the age of 23 has scored more goals than Sesko in Europe's top five leagues, as he's netted 39 in just 87 matches, reports the Manchester Evening News. This puts him one goal ahead of Real Madrid and England sensation Jude Bellingham, and five goals ahead of Florian Wirtz, whose summer transfer to Liverpool could set a British record if certain add-ons are met. In fourth place on the list is Bayern Munich phenom Jamal Musiala, who has racked up 33 goals during this period, followed by PSG's Bradley Barcola and German ace Maximilian Beier on 26. Sesko's impressive goal-scoring record, outperforming some of Europe's top young talents, will be a welcome sound to Amorim's ears. It suggests that the 22-year-old won't be overwhelmed when he arrives in Manchester, and United are fully committed to Sesko, having already agreed personal terms with him. Current Red Devil Rasmus Hojlund, who also scored 26 goals during this period, underscores the gap between him and Sesko. Despite not being entirely goal-shy since his £72m move to Old Trafford in 2023, the Dane has struggled to meet high expectations. ‌ Now, it seems likely that Sesko will join United, and Hojlund is reportedly prepared for the possibility of being pushed out if the Slovenian signs. Just two seasons after his £72m transfer, Hojlund could be available for as little as £30m, less than half of what was originally paid for him. However, during United's pre-season tour of the US, Hojlund expressed optimism about his future, stating: "I think my plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. "I'm still very young. I think people forget that sometimes. I'm only 22. Obviously, not every striker is scoring 100 goals at the age of 22 (like Erling Haaland). But I've learned a lot, I think you can see in my game. ‌ "I'm starting to develop and become even better in the basics. Now it's just about for me to sharpen myself and I've done very well in the pre-season so far. Just focusing on continuing that. "Competition is fine with me. It sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp, so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team."

Liverpool's Alexander Isak transfer plan given £165m boost as he honours Newcastle request

Alexander Isak is having to train away from his Newcastle team-mates in the afternoon amid continued interest from Liverpool, who are in negotiations to see more players exit Anfield Liverpool target Alexander Isak arrived for Newcastle training after being told to train away from the first-team with the Reds' recent activity potentially funding their next bid for the Swede. ‌ Isak has made it known to the St James' Park hierarchy that he wants to explore a move away from the club and Anfield is seen as his likely destination. The striker missed the club's pre-season trip to Asia and Eddie Howe has taken a firm stance over his conduct. ‌ The frontman is not training with the first-team and has been told not to report in until later in the afternoon when his team-mates had left - which he duly did amid the ongoing speculation around his future. ‌ Isak recently took himself off to his former club Real Sociedad's training complex with the Newcastle manager only finding out via the media. He frustration was evident recently as he said: 'The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad and you have to act in the right way. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Liverpool's opening offer of £120million was turned down by Newcastle, who value Isak at £150m. Any move would need the Magpies to either lower their demands or force the Reds into smashing the British-record transfer for the second time in one summer. Arne Slot has already spent more than £200m with Florian Wirtz his marquee signing. Hugo Ekitike has also been signed as a No 9 but Isak is still being pursued to further compliment a frontline that includes Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. Recent exits at Liverpool - with more potentially following - could yet fund a more for Isak and help keep Liverpool comfortably inline with the PSR regulations. Luis Diaz called time on his spell at Anfield by joining Bayern Munich with the German side paying £65.5m to land the Colombian. Darwin Nunez is expected to follow Diaz out the exit door and Al-Hilal have come forward and become the Uruguayan's likely destination. The Saudi Arabian side have expressed a willingness to pay £50m for the striker, who has fallen down the pecking order under Slot. The Liverpool manager could also see Harvey Elliott seek pastures new. The playmaker has admitted he will need to be "selfish" when it comes to his next move and his stock has risen after being named the best player at the U21 Euros this summer. A move, potentially to RB Leipzig, could bank the Reds £50m. All meaning they may pocket more than £150m from transfer exits in the space of two weeks. Jake Paul faces competition for Anthony Joshua fight as new rival emerges

A showdown between Joshua and Paul could take place as early as next year - but a top heavyweight contender could ruing the YouTuber-turned-boxer's plans Tony Yoka is eager to derail Jake Paul 's plans to face Anthony Joshua by challenging the two-time heavyweight champion himself. ‌ Yoka - who claimed Olympic gold in Rio - appeared destined for greatness following his professional debut in 2017, but the previously unbeaten heavyweight endured three consecutive losses to Martin Bakole, Carlos Takam and Ryad Merhy. ‌ He has since clawed his way back into contention with victories over Amine Boucetta, Lamah Griggs and Arslan Yallyev. Following those three triumphs, the Frenchman secured a lucrative deal with Queensberry Promotions as he seeks to re-establish himself as a heavyweight threat. ‌ After the announcement, speculation regarding a potential clash between Yoka and Joshua began to swirl, reports All Out Fighting. The French heavyweight was quick to respond to those rumours, telling BoxNation: "I mean, I heard some rumours about it. I believe in my team. "I believe in Queensberry, my manager and my coach to do the best fights for me. I'm not in any talks with him so I don't know what's going on. What I know is that I'm getting ready for anybody and after this big win, if they ask or propose me to fight Joshua, of course. That would be a great, great fight for me to take." Joshua has remained inactive since his crushing loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024 - but is eyeing a comeback before the end of the year. While Yoka reckons Joshua might have bigger fish to fry, the 33-year-old Frenchman would jump at the chance to square off against 'AJ' without hesitation. "There is a history behind it as two Olympic gold medalists. I think that's something that makes sense," he continued. "I saw him fight some guys that I didn't even know. I think it was just before Otto Wallin he fought a guy, I don't know the guy [Joshua beat Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius]. I understand that he lost against Dubois last year. They might want to do something like Joshua-Fury or whatever. You want a fight before that, I'm here. You don't have to look like too far from there." A potential clash between Joshua and Yoka could deal a massive setback to Paul. The YouTuber-turned-boxer and the British heavyweight have verbally committed to a bout. During a recent Sky Sports interview, Paul's promoter and business partner - Nakisa Bidarian - disclosed that he's in talks with Eddie Hearn and that the encounter could materialise much earlier than expected. ‌ "I think the fight can absolutely happen," he said. "I'm looking at it as Jake versus Joshua, which is quite biblical, and it's quite impactful in many ways. I think size wise, we can get comfortable with it, and I think experience wise, Jake is learning very fast and growing, and Joshua is a little long in the tooth. So it could be a very interesting matchup, and we're actively discussing it with Matchroom. "I think we're looking at it happening at the start of 2026. It's public that AJ was taking a little time away, I think he had a little surgery. So once he's ready, and once Jake is ready, we're going to squarely focus on that. It's a fight that Jake wants to do, and that's a discussion we've had at length, and he feels very confident about where he is in his career and his chances of upsetting Anthony Joshua." When is Jake Paul's next fight? After making a successful comeback to the ring in June, Paul is keen to keep the momentum going. The American is now able to compete for a world title, having been ranked in the WBC's cruiserweight listings after his victory over Chavez Jr. The manager of the 28-year-old fighter revealed that his client is keen to compete for a world title 'as soon as possible'. However, he concedes it's unlikely to be his next match, considering the current landscape at 200lbs. "Absolutely [he will fight again this year]. November or December," Bidarian informed Ariel Helwani when queried about Paul's forthcoming plans. "I'm meeting him tonight for dinner, and we'll discuss [his next opponent]. The only certainty right now is that Jake is eager to compete for a belt at the earliest opportunity. I need to have a chat with him, I reckon it's a tall order this year [to box for a world title]. Badou Jack is the one he's most interested in taking on, but he's obligated to a rematch with the bloke he just defeated [Noel Mikaelian] for the WBC. I'm not sure if a title bout is feasible this year, but we'll see."
