"Gopalakrishnan's statement indicates that there are people who still live with a feudal mindset. Now, if he says that he did not say that, the people will not believe it," said Govindan. The CPM state secretary also criticised the way people are viewed in the name of castes.
"Like Gopalakrishnan, many people continue to speak with the linguistic content of feudal decay, and this can be stated with certainty. This is the greatest injustice done to a democratic society.
The Kerala society has progressed well beyond the ideological level of feudal culture. The decay of the caste system has significantly decreased. The govt's stance was made clear by the minister on that same platform in response to Gopalakrishnan's statement," he added.
Meanwhile, filmmaker Sreekumaran Thampi came out in support of Gopalakrishnan saying that the main intention of what he said was that only the deserving should get the govt funds for making films.
"Even if it is dalits, scheduled castes or women, the intention was true. His words have been unnecessarily dragged into a controversy," he said.
Gopalakrishnan did not insult women or the scheduled castes in his speech, said Thampi, who shared the stage with Gopalakrishnan at the film conclave. He also claimed that he saw the four films which were shot using the govt funds. These films lacked quality matching the investment costs, he said.

Thampi also questioned how Pushpavathi could interrupt the speech of Gopalakrishnan. The organizers of the event should not have allowed that, he said.
Thampi said that he was not aware of who singer Pushpavathi was and had not heard her songs. When pointed out that she is the vice-chairperson of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Thampi said the heads of the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and Sahitya Akademi are members of the ruling party.

Mass protest demanding withdrawal of GO

Vijayawada: A Maha Dharna organised by the RTC (Road Transport Corporation) Land Protection Committee, drew a large crowd of activists, workers, and citizens here on Wednesday. Speakers at the rally called for the cancellation of GO 137, which proposes to lease 4.17 acres of valuable RTC land to the Lulu Group, a multinational company. The land is estimated to be worth around Rs 400 crore. Protesters argued that the government's decision to lease it for a significantly reduced annual rent of Rs 2 crore, down from an estimated Rs 40 crore, is unjust and corrupt. During the protest, various leaders and speakers raised strong objections and issued warnings to the government. RTC Land Protection Committee Convener and noted lawyer Sunkara Rajendra Prasad warned that the committee will not remain silent if this 'social asset' is looted. He declared, 'If the RTC old bus stand land is handed over to the Lulu company, the court will strike down the GO.' Chigurupati Babu Rao, state committee member of the CPM, announced a unified struggle with broad support to protect not only the RTC land but also other public spaces like the Visakhapatnam beach land. Ch Narsing Rao, General Secretary of the CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions), emphasised that the only way to protect these lands is through public movements. Former minister and state convenor of the Farmers' Unions Federation Coordination Committee, Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, spoke at the event stating that the decision to give the land to the Lulu company goes against the law and public opinion. He cited the court's earlier decision to strike down the previous government's 'three capitals' plan as an example of similar actions being overturned. He questioned why the government would lease the land for such a low rate, suggesting a secret deal. Other speakers, including D Kasi Nath (CPM), G Koteswara Rao (CPI), Sk Jilani Basha (SWF), YS Rao (Employees Union), and Konakalla Vidyadhara Rao (Chamber of Commerce), also voiced their opposition. They argued that the move would harm small and medium-scale businesses in the city and that the government has no right to sell off public property. They further warned that if GO 137 is not withdrawn, the trade and commerce associations would call for a bandh in Vijayawada. The protest concluded with slogans demanding the cancellation of GO 137, the protection of RTC lands, and a halt to the government's 'land hunger.' The event was presided over by Sunkara Rajendra Prasad and saw participation from various unions, prominent citizens, and activists.

Locals strongly oppose setting up of bulk drug park

Anakapalli: Tension prevailed at Nakkapalli as locals strongly opposed the proposal of setting up a Bulk Drug Park at the mandal on Wednesday. People and fishermen families voiced their views when Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board at Nakkapalli organised a public hearing. They expressed concern over the establishment of the park and contamination of groundwater due to the industry effluents. A number of people, who took part in the protest, highlighted that the park would pose health hazards as the industry would release untreated effluents into the sea. Fishermen expressed concern that their livelihood would be impacted. Protesters stated that they never asked for the drug park and the government is taking its stand without considering the public opinion. People's associations and Left Party leaders objected that the leaders were arrested before the public hearing programme and the public hearing was carried out without considering the public's opinion. They demanded to withdraw establishment of Bulk Drug Park. The park would bring pharmaceutical industries and the pollution emanating from them would affect the lives of the surrounding villagers. CPM leaders objected that the state government had deployed police even before the public hearing and threatened the villagers. They expressed anger over the house arrest of district secretary G Koteswara Rao, secretariat member M Appalaraju, and Nakkapalli mandal secretary M Rajesh. The CPM Anakapalli district committee strongly condemned the arrest of CPM central committee member K Lokanadham, who had gone to the public hearing venue to express his opinion. They are questioning how a park can be established without seeking the opinions of the people, public organisations. Villagers of Pedathinarla, CHL Puram, Upamaka, Rajayyapeta, Narsapuram and Gudivada in S Rayavaram mandal opposed the proposal and staged dharna at the tahsildar office. CPM central committee member K. Lokanadham alleged that the government has undertaken forced lan d acquisition to provide undue benefits to private individuals in the name of public interest. He pointed out that Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report on the Bulk Drug Park environmental public consultation was only to deceive the public.

Language row: SFI sends ‘Barnaparichay', ‘Sahaj Path' to Malviya

Kolkata: SFI, the students' wing of CPM , on Wednesday sent copies of 'Barnaparichay' and 'Sahaj Path' to Bengal BJP's co-in-charge in the state, Amit Malviya, following his comments on Bangla. "There is an attempt to incite hatred against the Bengali speakers across India. Amit Malviya's argument defending the Delhi Police statement clearly shows that he does not have any idea of the culture and language in the state. Bengal has been a melting pot for people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. That is the identity of Bengal," said SFI's state secretary Debanjan Dey, adding, "We also asked him to read the basic textbooks written in Bangla. " Malviya had posted on X: "There is, in fact, no language called 'Bengali' that neatly covers all these variants. 'Bengali' denotes ethnicity, not linguistic uniformity." The SFI also criticised TMC for trying to gain political mileage. "This binary is being created to polarise the population in the state. If they fail to learn from this, we will send flight tickets to BJP netas and ask them to visit the Andaman Cellular Jail. Hundreds of revolutionaries from Bengal were tortured there while BJP's ideologue Savarkar escaped from there."
