As societies around the world increasingly embrace egalitarian principles, the outdated notions of top-down and hierarchical control are gradually fading into the background. At MANZI Water, we aspire to embody this shift by championing a people-centric approach that empowers local entrepreneurs and fosters community growth through a decentralized business model.
In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the importance of a people-centric approach cannot be overstated. Recently, I had the privilege of sharing the story of MANZI Water on The Big Small Business Show, an experience that allowed me to reflect on the core principles that drive our success. Our journey is not just about providing clean drinking water; it's about empowering local entrepreneurs and fostering community growth through a decentralized business model.
At MANZI Water, we have consciously chosen to operate outside the traditional franchise framework. Instead, we have developed a purpose-built model governed by a robust License Agreement and supported by a transparent governance structure known as the Central Hub. This framework is designed to empower independent Licensees across South Africa, allowing them to thrive while ensuring the integrity of our brand.
The contrast between a top-down approach and our bottom-up, people-centric model is stark. In many corporate environments, decisions are made at the highest levels, often prioritizing profit margins over the needs of the community. This can lead to a disconnect between the business and its stakeholders, stifling innovation and limiting opportunities for local entrepreneurs. In contrast, our model places the power in the hands of individuals who are deeply rooted in their communities. By enabling local entrepreneurs to operate under clear guidelines, we create a network that is not only sustainable but also responsive to the unique challenges faced by each community.
Key to our success is the strict adherence to water quality control protocols aligned with SANS 241, ensuring that every drop of water we provide meets the highest standards. Our License Agreement outlines ethical standards that promote respect and professionalism, fostering a culture of accountability among our Licensees. This is not merely a contractual obligation; it is a commitment to uphold the values that define the MANZI Water brand.
Our approach is intentionally inclusive. The R850 per month License Fee may seem modest, but it is designed to lower barriers to entry for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly in underserved areas where access to clean water is critical. By shifting the cost burden to operational setup and volume-based rebates, we ensure that our model supports local reinvestment and job creation. In just over two years, we have launched more than 100 outlets, created over 300 jobs, and introduced eco-friendly automated MANZI Water Refill Stations in communities that previously struggled with inconsistent municipal supply.

Image: Oupa Mokoena / Independent Newspapers A Gauteng couple took action against Absa bank after alleging reckless lending practices that have led them into a spiralling debt of over R5.1 million. Christian Daniel De Klerk and his partner, long-standing customers of the bank, claim that their financial wellness was compromised when they accepted a second home loan from Absa without being given a suitable affordability assessment. Initially, the De Klerks secured a R1.9 million home loan from Absa in 2011 and, for nearly a decade, they successfully met their repayment obligations. However, following the collapse of the husband's legal practice in March 2020 due to the pandemic, the couple were granted a temporary three-month payment holiday. Ironically, during the same month, they said Absa approached them with an offer for a second loan, amounting to R3.2 million. Despite their precarious situation, the couple accepted the offer. Meanwhile, the husband remained unemployed until June 2024 and the couple faced mounting debt because of missed repayments from 2022. They maintained that their current income was inadequate to service both the new instalments and the arrears. Nevertheless, they submitted that they could meet the loan obligations under terms similar to those agreed upon in March 2020. In seeking respite, the couple brought their case before the National Consumer Tribunal (NCT), voicing their primary grievance against Absa's alleged failure to conduct a proper affordability assessment before approving the second loan. They argued that Absa did not request essential financial documentation such as proof of income, detailed expense records, or even a credit history report—critical assessments that would typically inform responsible lending practices. The couple contended that granting them a loan while the husband was unemployed amounted to reckless lending. In addition, the couple alleged that Absa also failed to provide clear information regarding the loan's terms, conditions, interest rates, and penalties for missed repayments, all of which they argue have contributed to their current financial hardship. As a result of these alleged contraventions, the couple said that they are suffering severe financial hardship, face the risk of foreclosure, and are enduring significant emotional distress, which has adversely affected their quality of life. In the answering affidavit, Absa argued the couple's application was time-barred as more than three years have elapsed since the alleged cause of action arose. Moreover, the bank submitted that the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria enforced the loan agreement in September 2024 and ordered the couple to pay over R5.1 million including interests and declared the couples' property executable. The bank added that the couple's case was frivolous, vexatious, and constitutes an abuse of the Tribunal's process. In their reply, the couple disputed the assertion that the matter was time-barred. They argue that the cause of action only arose in 2022 when they began defaulting on their home loan repayments. On this basis, they contend that the three-year period should be calculated from 2022, not from 2020 when the second home loan was granted. They also disputed the contention that the high court judgment precludes them from pursuing the complaint before the tribunal. They argue that the issue of reckless lending, which forms the crux of their complaint before the tribunal, and it was not adjudicated by the high court. Looking at matter, the tribunal said by law, the limitation period must be calculated from 2020 March when the alleged reckless credit was extended. Having filed their application for leave to refer in February 2025—almost five years post the alleged reckless lending—the tribunal indicated that they would be barred from considering the complaint, potentially closing the door on their search for justice. Thales's bid for a permanent stay in Jacob Zuma's arms deal trial rejected

Image: Tumi Pakkies / Independent Newspapers Former president Jacob Zuma and his co-accused, Thales, are yet to decide whether they will file an appeal application against Tuesday's Pietermaritzburg High Court ruling to dismiss the arms deal case against them. Zuma, who now leads the Umkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), had piggybacked on the giant French arms manufacturer's application for the permanent stay to escape being tried for fraud, corruption, racketeering, and money laundering charges. Zuma was not in court on Tuesday. The charges dated back to the 1998 arms deal, which the government had entered into with Thales, but whose trial has been delayed due to many factors, including attempts to get state prosecutor Advocate Billy Downer off the trial due to allegations of bias, which Judge Nkosinathi Chili had rejected in September last year. After Chili's ruling on Tuesday morning, the State and defence teams agreed to postpone the case to December 4. The postponement would give Thales time to decide whether to file an appeal against Chili's ruling. Zuma would also get time to go to a higher court to appeal against Chili's ruling that Downer should continue prosecuting the matter. Regarding the stay of prosecution application, Thales's legal team had, on April 24, advanced an argument that continuing with the trial would be constitutionally unfair since its client's former directors, Pierre Moynto and Alain Thetard, who were its prime witnesses, had died. Moynto had been the director of Thales and the executive officer of the African Defence Systems, another entity, 'which featured prominently in the State case against Thales'. He died on December 31, 2020. Thetard, who died in September 2022, also served as Thales's director. Both accused had contended that without Moynto and Thetard's testimony, their defence would be severely prejudiced. 'In support of its case, Thales alleged that the importance of Moynto and Thetard in the criminal trial against Thales was unquestionable, (as) they are the only individuals who would be able to testify on behalf of Thales and also to assist Thales in challenging any evidence led by the State against it,' said Chili. Zuma and Thales said that had the case against them not been delayed, Moynto and Thetard would have been available to testify. Zuma had said that if Thales succeeds, he would also apply to have his charges dropped because the alleged corruptor would no longer be on trial. However, that hope was dashed when Chili rejected the Thales argument that Moynto and Thetard's testimony was important. 'The question of whether they would prejudice, which might result in Thales not receiving a constitutionally fair trial, is a matter for the trial court. 'Whether the right to a fair trial is infringed, the matter would be best decided by the court,' said Chili. He agreed with Zuma's argument that his prosecution was conjoined with that of Thales and could not be separated, and that 'if Thales's case fails, Zuma's case must also fail'. He read an extract from the Criminal Procedure Act, which states that the decision to stop the prosecution rested with the State. 'There is nothing in the Act that empowers the court to direct the State to either withdraw a charge or stop the prosecution against an accused person. 'I am therefore satisfied that it would be incompetent of this court to grant the relief sought in prayer one of the main applications (brought by Thales),' said Chili. The judge said Thales was shifting the goalposts by claiming that Thetard and Moynto were its invaluable witnesses. He said that its May application contradicted another permanent stay of prosecution, which it made in November 2018, where it stated that Thetard was not prepared to come to South Africa to testify in the trial. He said Thales had at the time supported its argument by giving the court Thetard's affidavit, which was dated March 11, 2009, that he was not available to testify. He said Thales should have indicated in its latest application that Thetard had at some point changed his mind and was ready to testify. 'Without such evidence, one is tempted to conclude that Thales conveniently decided to move the goalpost.' He said the State had previously stated that Moynto was not important because he was not a central actor in the event, giving rise to the charges against Thales. 'It was the common course that he was not an officer or an employee of Thales in April 1998 and the third quarter of 2000, during which most of the events occurred. 'He only represented Thales before April 1998 and thereafter late in the year 2000 onwards,' said Chili. [email protected]

According to forecasts by Statista, the African travel and tourism market will be worth $33.54 billion (about 601bn) by 2029, benefiting from a post-pandemic recovery in trip-taking, improved international connectivity and strong demand for high-quality accommodation. Hotels comprise the largest part of this, with an estimated market volume of $15bn by 2029. 'For local and international business owners, this is a prime opportunity to unlock growth,' according to Joshua Low, Vice President of dmg events South Africa. The company is organising the eighth edition of Hotel & Hospitality Expo Africa, which will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from June 11 to 12 — its first time in the Mother City. The move seeks to capitalise on Cape Town's robust tourism and hospitality industry. 'African hospitality is unparalleled,' Low said. 'We have a lot to offer the world, from unique gastronomic experiences to rich cultural heritage and the expert creation of welcoming home spaces away from home.
