Africa's hospitality boom forecast to reach $33. 54bn by 2029

FUELLED in part by a surge in 'bleisure' (combined business and leisure) travel, the continent's hospitality sector is poised for significant growth in the next five years.
According to forecasts by Statista, the African travel and tourism market will be worth $33.54 billion (about 601bn) by 2029, benefiting from a post-pandemic recovery in trip-taking, improved international connectivity and strong demand for high-quality accommodation.
Hotels comprise the largest part of this, with an estimated market volume of $15bn by 2029.
'For local and international business owners, this is a prime opportunity to unlock growth,' according to Joshua Low, Vice President of dmg events South Africa. The company is organising the eighth edition of Hotel & Hospitality Expo Africa, which will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from June 11 to 12 — its first time in the Mother City.
The move seeks to capitalise on Cape Town's robust tourism and hospitality industry.
'African hospitality is unparalleled,' Low said. 'We have a lot to offer the world, from unique gastronomic experiences to rich cultural heritage and the expert creation of welcoming home spaces away from home. Savvy professionals are positioning themselves as part of this and putting their enterprises on the map.'

Hotel & Hospitality Expo Africa will welcome more than 150 exhibitors and 4 000 visitors from across the industry, including a large number of top-tier executives and other key decision-makers.
The event will provide an interactive platform to explore opportunities for investment and innovation, as well as keep abreast of the latest trends. It is part of dmg events' global hospitality showcase, which includes large-scale events in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.
In a value-adding move, Hotel & Hospitality Expo Africa will be co-located with the inaugural Africa Food Show, part of the acclaimed Gulfood series of international events.
'Our exhibitors stand to benefit from this strategic collaboration,' Low said. 'It provides an opportunity to showcase their products and services to a much wider, more diverse audience. The decision plays into the increased convergence we are seeing between the food, beverage and hospitality industries.'
In a first for the Hotel & Hospitality Expo Africa, the event will include HORECA Connect, a special hub for professionals from the hotel, restaurant and catering sector. This significantly broadens the scope of the event, as well as the opportunities for businesses looking to expand their reach.
With revenues exceeding $6bn in 2023 and more than 22.6 million diners served nationwide, the restaurant and bar sector is one of the fastest-growing in South Africa's hospitality market.
A highlight of the Hotel & Hospitality Expo Africa will be the much-anticipated launch of the 2025 African Hospitality Confidence Index report, which reveals research-based insights into market sentiment, challenges, trends and innovation.
It is considered a key planning tool in the industry. It will be launched at the Conference section of the event, which is supported by Santam.
Other learning opportunities include presentations and panels by a high-level line-up of speakers, featuring names like Jacques Stoltz, Director: Tourism, Department of Economic Development, Western Cape Government; Enver Duminy, Chief Executive Officer, Cape Town Tourism; ; Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa, Chief Executive Officer, The Tourism Business Council of South Africa; Darryl Erasmus, Chief Operating Officer, South African Tourism; Neil Hughes, Managing Director, Providence Hospitality; and Geri Flanagan, Development Manager, Accor Hotels, among many others.

Water department heralds securing $10 billion in funding for Africa
The African Union Water Investment Summit was aiming to raise US$30 billion, but Minister Pemmy Majodina expects more will follow. Minster of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina has celebrated a collective pledge to inject over US$10 billion into African water projects. The financial commitment was secured at the inaugural African Union Investment Programme (AIP) Water Investment Summit held in Cape Town last week. The programme to address the continent's water security was initiated in 2021, with the funds raised in the Mother City to be distributed among almost 40 different countries. Continental investment The water summit formed part of the wide-reaching engagements under the the banner of South Africa's G20 presidency and featured international water ministers and African heads of state. However, the amount raised through the three-day engagements between the nearly 1 700 delegates in attendance is just one-third of the amount sought by African leaders. The water ministry confirmed that 80 projects across 38 countries were demmed a priority and subsequently attracted between US$10 and $12 billion in investment. Majodina said more was expected, but that the grand amount envisioned for investment in Africa's water security was US$30 billion — or R528 billion at this week's exchange rate. Majodina said the attendees identified finance, capacity and data gaps in the water sector, and urged government to break down regulatory barriers. 'Let us eliminate long and unnecessary red tape which undermines and discourages investment,' said the minister. 'We have also managed to showcase a pipeline of bankable water and sanitation projects to prospective funders and investors,' she boasted. South African water woes On Monday, Majodina did not reveal how much of the investment would be allocated to South Africa. Johannesburg alone has previously reported the need for R37 billion to address its water infrastructure backlog. Debt levels are also high, as during a Standing Committee of Public Accounts in June the department of water and sanitation noted that national municipal debt to water boards sat at R25 billion. Regarding the human resources needed to resolve South Africa's water infrastructure problems, the minister stated that the percentage engineers employed at municipal level had decreased from 84.6% in nineties, to 6.4% currently. The Auditor General (AG) of South Africa last year stated that 71% of regional bulk water projects were delayed and that budgets had been inflated by at least R9.4 billion in the last 15 years. 'If the root causes for poor project management are not corrected, there is a risk that other projects may be similarly delayed,' stated the AG. Mining industry raises concerns over impact of proposed legislation on investment and jobs

The Minerals Council South Africa has raised concerns regarding the recently published Mineral Resources Development Bill, arguing it fails to foster an environment conducive to investment and job creation. The draft Mineral Resources Development Bill, published for public comment in May until 13 August, aims to transform South Africa's mining industry by strengthening regulations, promoting inclusive growth, and enhancing the legal governance of mineral exploitation. The Bill addresses various aspects of the mining sector, including artisanal and small-scale mining, transfer of mining rights, and empowerment requirements. However, concerns remain regarding the impact on agricultural land, investor confidence, and the potential for unintended consequences. Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, Minerals Council's CEO Mzila Mthenjane emphasised that the bill, in its current form, cannot drive the necessary transformation and growth that South Africa's mining sector requires. Mthenjane said it was of fundamental importance for the Minerals Council that the Bill creates certainty, predictability, and a competitive regulatory environment, while eliminating ambiguity in what will become the Act to ensure we build on the successes we have had to date. 'The regulatory environment must be conducive to encouraging investment in exploration, mine development and sustain existing mining operations so that the industry can grow, create jobs and generate the wealth it is capable of delivering for the benefit of all South Africans,' Mthenjane said. 'Our key point of departure in engagements with the Department is to have pragmatic conversations that address elements of the Bill that discourage investment and growth of the industry which we all agree has untapped potential that is not being realised.' 'We are positive about our engagement with the department and we are confident they will consider our submissions, along with contributions from other stakeholders, which call for a regulatory environment that is conducive to encouraging investment in exploration, mine development, and also to sustain existing mine operations,' he said. The need for regulatory clarity is compounded by issues surrounding ministerial discretion, which has previously raised eyebrows. The Council called for a transparent and predictable regulatory framework that can rebuild trust between the mining industry and the department. One of the primary concerns identified relates to the empowerment provisions embedded in the upcoming bill, which, as of yet, have not been fully revealed through regulations. While industry officials acknowledge the intent to clarify these provisions by late June, concrete comments on their implications remain elusive. The removal of requirements for empowerment during the prospecting phase might pave the way for a more inclusive mining environment, yet clarity is crucial for stakeholders to fully grasp their operational impact. Ursula Brown, head of legal at the Council, said one of the primary concerns identified related to the empowerment provisions embedded in the Bill, which, as of yet, have not been fully revealed through regulations. Brown said the removal of requirements for empowerment during the prospecting phase might pave the way for a more inclusive mining environment, yet clarity was crucial for stakeholders to fully grasp their operational impact.
