Deion Sanders lectures player about Band-Aids over his earrings
Colorado football coach Deion Sanders delivered a stern message to his team Monday about penalties, Band-Aids and earrings – a lecture designed to grab his players' attention about something they've sometimes lacked in his first two seasons.
Discipline.
The Buffaloes committed the third-most penalties in the nation in 2023 (107) and the most in the Big 12 Conference in 2024 (100). He reminded his team about it Monday after returning to campus in Boulder following a brief respite in Texas.
'Last in the conference in penalties, right?' Sanders said to his team, as documented on Well Off Media, a YouTube channel run by his eldest son Deion Jr. 'So that means no discipline, right?'
Sanders then singled out an unidentified player who apparently had showed up for the team workout wearing bandages over his earrings. Sanders has prohibited earrings while in uniform and during meetings.
FIXING ANOTHER PROBLEM: Colorado increases investment in offensive line coaching under Deion Sanders
'We got one cat out here with Band-Aids over his ears,' Sanders said. 'What that mean? That means `I'm gonna wear my earrings, but I'm gonna put a Band-Aid over them, because I ain't gonna listen to y'all because I ain't got no discipline.' Does that mean that? What that mean? What that mean? That mean you gonna do you right? Forget us. Anybody else out here with earrings in? Anybody else besides one dude?'
Sanders gave the player a warning, telling him he'd be on the 'first thing smoking' if he did it again – a reference to transportation out of town.
'Come out here like that again, please,' Sanders told him. 'I promise you you'll be on the first thing smoking. You got that?'
'Yes sir,' the player replied.
'Discipline,' Sanders said. 'Discipline.'
The Buffs finished 9-4 in Sanders' second season last year and will begin the third spring practice season under him March 11. They begin the 2025 season Aug. 30 at home against Georgia Tech.

Deion Sanders calls out reports about his son's NFL draft meetings: 'Stop lying'
Deion Sanders is calling BS on reports about his son in his meetings with NFL teams ahead of the draft. In the days leading up to the draft, it was reported that Shedeur Sanders flopped in meetings, with one exec saying it was the "worst" and that he was "entitled." Other reports circulated that he was unprepared and nonchalant in the interviews - and it turned into an unprecedented slide that saw a possible top-three player fall all the way to the fifth round. Well, Coach Prime said that he felt the negative rumors came about because people "were afraid that I would go to the NFL" from Colorado. "They want to create these narratives and create these stories and then attach them to a kid that ain't never did nothing wrong," Sanders said on Asante Samuel's "Say What Needs To Be Said" podcast. "Stop lying. You gotta understand - my kids are built for everything… We've always been in front of the camera, so they know how to navigate, they know how to handle themselves, you're not gonna catch them in no foolery or no mess. "When you sit up there and say something like he went into a meeting unprepared, like, dude. Shedeur Sanders? Who has had six different [offensive] coordinators, who has still functioned and leveled up every time we brought somebody new in, and you're going to tell me he was unprepared? You're going to tell me he had on headphones? Anybody who knows my son understands he's a professional. He's going to go into a meeting with headphones on? Y'all, come on now." "It did hurt," Sanders continued. "But the Bible says God uses the foolish things to confound the wise. There was some foolish stuff that went on, but that gave them something that they needed. Like that edge that Tom [Brady] had, it gave them the edge that you had, it gave them the edge that I have. Folks said we weren't gonna be nothing. But we had to prove that. It gave them the edge that they needed. Both of them." Coach Prime offered a similar sentiment late last month when he called out "false rumors." "Let's Stop Lying today, tomorrow and the next day. Stop also trafficking false rumors or stories that don't involve not 1 witness that will stand by the story they told privately in order for it to circulate publicly," Sanders wrote on X. Eventually, the Cleveland Browns selected Sanders, but not before selecting Dillon Gabriel in the third round. The rookies make up 40% of the quarterback room which also includes Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett. 2025 NFL odds: Bettors backing Shedeur Sanders to win OROY
National Football League 2025 NFL odds: Bettors backing Shedeur Sanders to win OROY Published Jun. 2, 2025 5:33 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Shedeur Sanders has already made a big splash in NFL betting markets — and that's all without having played one snap of professional football. At BetMGM, the quarterback out of Colorado is the book's biggest liability for Offensive Rookie of the Year. In this spot, Sanders has both the highest ticket (10.5%) and the highest handle (23.5%). But when you look at the board, his odds are nowhere near the top to win the award. Currently, Ashton Jeanty and Cam Ward are the favorites at +250. Shedeur's Colorado teammate Travis Hunter rounds out the top three at +600. Tetairoa McMillan at +1300 and Omarion Hampton at +1400 are fourth and fifth. So where is Shedeur? He's 10th at +2200. But that hasn't stopped bettors from believing that he can bring home the hardware, and that could partially be because of the incredible stats he put up while starting at QB for the Buffaloes. In 2024, Sanders racked up 4,134 passing yards and had 37 touchdowns. Over the course of 24 games in Boulder, he went 651-for-907 passing with a total of 7,364 yards, 64 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Despite those lofty numbers, Sanders unceremoniously fell to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Cleveland Browns ended up selecting him with the 144th pick, and that was after quarterbacks like Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe and Dillon Gabriel came off the board. ADVERTISEMENT For added context, Cleveland grabbed Gabriel off the board with the 94th pick. According to "The Herd" co-host Jason McIntyre, Sanders' draft stock likely took a hit because of his father Deion's big personality. "I'm now thinking, NFL teams and front offices were like, 'No thank you,' precisely because of this," McIntyre said regarding Hall of Famer Deion Sanders' comments on a podcast about how his son was handled during the draft. But it's not where a player falls in the draft that decides if they can earn an accolade like Rookie of the Year. Instead, it's where you end up during the season. Should Shedeur Sanders start for the Browns? And "The Herd" host Colin Cowherd likes Sanders' chances to be named QB No. 1 in Cleveland. "Despite the fact that Shedeur Sanders had the fewest attempts, he was the most efficient with the fewest reps," Cowherd said as he compared quarterbacks on the Browns' depth chart. "By a landslide, Shedeur Sanders should be starting. "I think [Joe] Flacco is going to win the starting job initially. But I'm calling it for Shedeur," he continued. "With very average personnel [at Colorado] outside of Travis Hunter, against the very best teams he played, he was highly productive." Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Deion Sanders blasts 'foolish' reports about Shedeur Sanders' professionalism during NFL's pre-draft process
Deion Sanders opened up on Monday about reports that his son and former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders went into pre-draft meetings unprepared and unprofessional. The Colorado head coach and former NFL star who coached his son through college said he was "hurt" by the reports around Shedeur's slide into the fifth round of the NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns. Advertisement Sanders made his comments in an interview on Asante Samuel's "Say what needs to be said" podcast. "When you sit up there and say something like he went into a meeting unprepared, like, dude," Deion said. "Shedeur Sanders? Who has had six different coordinators, who has still functioned and went up, leveled up every time we brought somebody new in, and you're going to tell me he was unprepared? "You're going to tell me he had on headphones? Anybody who knows my son understands he's a professional. He's gonna go into a meeting with headphones on? Y'all, come on now." Why did Shedeur Sanders drop to 5th round? At one point in the pre-draft process, Sanders was projected in media evaluations as a first-round prospect. Reports closer to the draft indicated that Sanders was actually not a first-round talent. Those evaluations bore truth when Sanders dropped into the fifth round. Deion Sanders, right, is not buying rumors that his son, Shedeur Sanders, wore headphones during a pre-draft interview. () (Julio Aguilar via Getty Images) Some of the reasons for Sanders' then-projected slide were purely related to football. By many accounts, including from Yahoo Sports NFL Draft analyst Nate Tice, Sanders didn't possess the elite arm talent, athleticism or size to have warranted a first-round selection. Other reports questioned Sanders' character and professionalism. Advertisement Deion addressed the latter on Monday, referring to the reports as "some foolish stuff" while citing former sixth-round pick and seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady as inspiration for Shedeur. "It did hurt," Deion Sanders said. "But the bible says God uses the foolish things to confound the wise. There was some foolish stuff that went on, but, you know what? That gave them something that they needed. … "Like that edge that Tom had, it gave them the edge that you had, it gave them the edge that I have. Folks said we weren't gonna be nothing. But we had to prove that. That gave them that edge that they needed. Both of them." Not all of the pre-draft reports on Shedeur Sanders were legitimate Some of the reports critical of Sanders' pre-draft preparedness came from legitimate reporting. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero cited an anonymous NFL assistant coach who called Sanders' interview with his team "the worst formal interview I've ever been in in my life." Others — like the headphones rumor that Deion referenced — appear to have come out of thin air. And Deion appears right be perplexed by it. Advertisement A "report" with no sourcing attached and no citation stated that Sanders "wore headphones around his neck with music playing throughout the entire interview." The "report" claims to have quoted an NFL head coach and was shared ad nauseam on random social media accounts enough that it was given an air of legitimacy. Deion chalked the rumors up to people taking "shots at his kids," whom he argued were too savvy and prepared to make those kinds of mistakes. "My kids are built for everything," Deion said. … "We've always been in front of the camera, so they know how to navigate, they know how to handle themselves. "You're not gonna catch them in no foolery or no mess. You're not gonna do that whatsoever."
