‘Whole Day Of Court Wasted': Bombay HC Trashes Plea Challenging Maharashtra Poll Results
Opposition had raised questions over Maharashtra Assembly polls and ECI, alleging voter fraud in elections. However, the Bombay HC has rejected a plea challenging the poll results.
In a major setback to the Opposition, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea challenging the results of last year's Maharashtra Assembly polls, alleging bogus voting.
The petition was filed by one Chetan Ahire, alleging that over 75 lakh votes were polled after the official closing time fixed by the ECI (6 pm). The petitioner also claimed that there were a lot of discrepancies in nearly 95 seats, where the data of the votes polled and counted did not tally, Live Law reported.
What Did The Court Say?
A division bench of Justice Girish Kulkarni and Justice Arif Doctor slammed the petitioner, stating that it 'wasted" the court's precious time.
'We have no manner of doubt that this petition needs to be rejected. Thus, this petition is rejected. The whole day of this Court was wasted while hearing this petition. We were of the view that costs should be imposed on them but we refrain from doing so," Live Law quoted Justice Kulkarni as saying.
The decision comes as a setback to the Congress-led Opposition in Maharashtra, which had alleged voter fraud in the polls. Top leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, had raked up the matter in Lok Sabha, alleging forgery by the ruling party.
The petition raised serious concerns about problems in the voting process, such as a surprisingly large number of votes being cast in the final minutes and even after polling officially ended. It also pointed out that there was not enough transparency in how these votes were recorded.
Advocate Prakash Ambedkar, representing the petitioner along with lawyers Sandesh More and Hitendra Gandhi, argued that nearly 75 lakh votes were cast in the final minutes and even after the 6 pm deadline.
He said, 'But there was no clear or transparent system in place to record or verify whether these votes were genuine."
The petition sought that the Assembly election results be declared null and void, citing violation of various norms.
The Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer also opposed the plea and questioned the tenability of the petition.

Samajwadi Party alleges attack on UP LoP in Gorakhpur, demands strict action
Pandey, who was scheduled to pass through the Virasat Corridor and address the media at Tiwari Hata, was stopped mid-way at Narmal Chauraha by a group of BJP workers and traders who chanted slogans like 'SP wapas jao' (Go back SP). Gorakhpur/Lucknow, Jun 25 (PTI) Samajwadi Party veteran and Leader of Opposition in Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Mata Prasad Pandey, faced strong resistance from BJP workers and members of the business community during a visit to Gorakhpur on Wednesday. A minor scuffle ensued, in which some vehicles of the Samajwadi Party sustained damages, including broken windows. In response, Pandey and several Samajwadi Party workers staged a sit-in protest on the road. A parallel sit-in protest was staged by BJP supporters and members of the trader community at the same spot. Police intervened to disperse the BJP crowd, allowing Pandey to proceed after briefly interacting with some traders. Soon after, the Samajwadi Party convoy resumed its journey to Tiwari Hata. Talking to reporters later, Pandey said, 'Traders are not getting fair compensation of land. When we went to inspect the situation where houses are being demolished for road widening, we were stopped mid-way by BJP workers and an MLA. The window of our vehicle was smashed.' Responding to the incident, BJP MLA Vipin Singh said, 'When Gorakhpur and the entire state are witnessing rapid development, the Samajwadi Party is resorting to such theatrics for political mileage. The business community now sees through their agenda, and that's why this protest happened.' Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav alleged that Pandey and former MLA Lal Bihari Yadav were 'attacked' by anti-social elements during their visit to Gorakhpur. In a post on micro-blogging site X, Yadav termed the incident 'highly condemnable' and said it raises serious concerns about the state of democracy in Uttar Pradesh. 'The attack on Mata Prasad Pandey ji and Lal Bihari Yadav ji by anti-social elements during their Gorakhpur visit is deeply condemnable,' Yadav said in the post in Hindi. 'If political outreach and public grievance redressal are met with deadly assaults by state-backed anarchic forces, then this can only be called rule by anarchy,' he added. The Samajwadi Party chief demanded strict and impartial action against the culprits, warning that failure to do so would be seen as a 'deliberate conspiracy'. 'If action is not taken, it will be believed that this is a case of 'jo bhaata nahi, use hataaya jaata hai, jo PDA nahi, use sataaya jaata hai' (You remove those who you don't like, you trouble whose who are from the PDA community) – a well-planned plot,' he said, alluding to the government's housing scheme and political rivalry. The official X handle of Samajwadi Party also chipped in, accusing the BJP-led government of shielding criminals and trying to suppress voices of the affected. 'To silence the truth, the government is relying on goons,' the party posted. 'In a shameful act, anti-social elements were used to attack Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey and Lal Bihari Yadav in Gorakhpur while they were meeting traders victimised by government actions,' it read. The party further alleged that the motive behind the attack was to prevent traders from airing their grievances, and demanded strict and unbiased action from the police. There was no official response from the local administration or the police regarding the incident. No arrests were made till Wednesday night. CM urges Centre to roll back fare hike; passengers flag concerns
Chennai: Calling Indian Railways "an integral part" of daily life for the poor and middle class, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday urged the Union govt not to hike passenger fares or reduce general class coaches. "The Indian Railway isn't just a service – it's family," Stalin said in a post on X. "To increase the number of AC coaches, don't cut down general class coaches. Don't raise fares." He added that the hike, set to take effect from July, already dampened public mood and would worsen the burden on households already struggling with rising prices and fuel costs. Passenger associations also voiced concern the same day, warning that reducing affordable travel options would drive more people to unsafe or overcrowded modes of transport. AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami also opposed the Centre's proposed railway fare hike, calling it unacceptable and demanding its immediate withdrawal. However, he criticised CM Stalin's stance as hypocritical, pointing out that the DMK-led Tamil Nadu govt already burdened middle-class families with multiple tax and tariff hikes. T Sadagopan, a commuter rights activist from Pattabiram, said demand far exceeds supply. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 월 2만원으로 아이들의 한끼 선물하기 굿네이버스 더 알아보기 Undo "The demand for trains is very high, but they haven't increased the number of trains. It's okay to raise fares if services improve," he said. He pointed out that many travellers are forced to book last-minute tickets at higher tatkal or premium tatkal rates and, failing that, turn to costly road transport. However, some felt the hike was minor and justified. "It was revised only five years ago. The increase is very minimum," said K Baskar of the Railway Passengers' Welfare Association. "Even Chennai–Madurai may not be affected, as the proposal only covers routes above 500 km at one paisa per km." Emergency's 50th anniversary sparks political face-off in Raj
1 2 Jaipur/Jhunjhunu/Jodhpur: The 50th anniversary of the Emergency sparked intense political debates across Rajasthan, with ruling BJP and opposition Congress trading sharp accusations over the historical event and ongoing development projects Wednesday. Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, addressing the Democracy Fighter Honour Ceremony at Maheshwari Public School in Jaipur, termed the Emergency a "dark stain on our democratic history." Sharma accused the Congress of harming national interests through "appeasement, nepotism and corrupt politics in its lust for power." Deputy chief minister Diya Kumari, speaking at BJP's 'Sacrifice Day' event in Sikar, shared a personal connection to the period, revealing that her father, late Brig Bhawani Singh, a Mahavir Chakra awardee, was imprisoned during the Emergency. Former CM Ashok Gehlot, however, defended the Emergency, stating it "was the need of the time." Speaking in Jodhpur, Gehlot reminded that Congress had faced consequences of imposing Emergency but subsequently won the general elections with a significant majority under Indira Gandhi's leadership. Gehlot dismissed BJP's attempts to leverage the Emergency issue for political gain. PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra added another dimension to the debate, claiming that RSS man Balasaheb had actually supported the Emergency, and pointed out that Kumari's father had contested Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket. The political discourse extended beyond the Emergency, with Dotasra alleging an "undeclared emergency" under the current Modi govt. He also questioned the BJP govt's progress on various infrastructure projects, including the Fatehpur Road bypass and Nawalgarh Road railway bridge. On the other hand, Deputy CM Kumari highlighted developments in Jhunjhunu, including the Shekhawati Havelis, Khatu Shyamji Corridor and Jhunjhunu War Museum projects, with the central govt allocating Rs 87 crore for the Khatu Shyamji project. Congress, however, accused the BJP of taking credit for initiatives started during their previous tenure at the govt. The day saw multiple events across the state, including a seminar titled "The Dark Chapter of Indian Democracy - Constitution Murder Day - 2025" at the Constitution Club, marking five decades since the Emergency's imposition.
