Samajwadi Party alleges attack on UP LoP in Gorakhpur, demands strict action
Pandey, who was scheduled to pass through the Virasat Corridor and address the media at Tiwari Hata, was stopped mid-way at Narmal Chauraha by a group of BJP workers and traders who chanted slogans like 'SP wapas jao' (Go back SP).
Gorakhpur/Lucknow, Jun 25 (PTI) Samajwadi Party veteran and Leader of Opposition in Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Mata Prasad Pandey, faced strong resistance from BJP workers and members of the business community during a visit to Gorakhpur on Wednesday.
A minor scuffle ensued, in which some vehicles of the Samajwadi Party sustained damages, including broken windows.
In response, Pandey and several Samajwadi Party workers staged a sit-in protest on the road. A parallel sit-in protest was staged by BJP supporters and members of the trader community at the same spot. Police intervened to disperse the BJP crowd, allowing Pandey to proceed after briefly interacting with some traders. Soon after, the Samajwadi Party convoy resumed its journey to Tiwari Hata.
Talking to reporters later, Pandey said, 'Traders are not getting fair compensation of land. When we went to inspect the situation where houses are being demolished for road widening, we were stopped mid-way by BJP workers and an MLA. The window of our vehicle was smashed.' Responding to the incident, BJP MLA Vipin Singh said, 'When Gorakhpur and the entire state are witnessing rapid development, the Samajwadi Party is resorting to such theatrics for political mileage. The business community now sees through their agenda, and that's why this protest happened.' Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav alleged that Pandey and former MLA Lal Bihari Yadav were 'attacked' by anti-social elements during their visit to Gorakhpur.
In a post on micro-blogging site X, Yadav termed the incident 'highly condemnable' and said it raises serious concerns about the state of democracy in Uttar Pradesh.
'The attack on Mata Prasad Pandey ji and Lal Bihari Yadav ji by anti-social elements during their Gorakhpur visit is deeply condemnable,' Yadav said in the post in Hindi.
'If political outreach and public grievance redressal are met with deadly assaults by state-backed anarchic forces, then this can only be called rule by anarchy,' he added.
The Samajwadi Party chief demanded strict and impartial action against the culprits, warning that failure to do so would be seen as a 'deliberate conspiracy'.
'If action is not taken, it will be believed that this is a case of 'jo bhaata nahi, use hataaya jaata hai, jo PDA nahi, use sataaya jaata hai' (You remove those who you don't like, you trouble whose who are from the PDA community) – a well-planned plot,' he said, alluding to the government's housing scheme and political rivalry.
The official X handle of Samajwadi Party also chipped in, accusing the BJP-led government of shielding criminals and trying to suppress voices of the affected.
'To silence the truth, the government is relying on goons,' the party posted.
'In a shameful act, anti-social elements were used to attack Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey and Lal Bihari Yadav in Gorakhpur while they were meeting traders victimised by government actions,' it read.
The party further alleged that the motive behind the attack was to prevent traders from airing their grievances, and demanded strict and unbiased action from the police.
There was no official response from the local administration or the police regarding the incident. No arrests were made till Wednesday night. PTI COR/KIS RUK RUK

BJP staging Emergency drama: Kharge
New Delhi: An undeclared emergency is prevailing in the country for the last 11 years, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge claimed on Wednesday while accusing the BJP of staging a "drama" of observing 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to mark the Emergency proclamation to hide governance failure. Kharge said if there is any threat to democracy and the Constitution, it is from the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hitting back at Modi over his jibes on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, he said a government which has no tolerance and does not allow fraternity and liberty to prosper has no right to lecture others.

Ashok Gehlot's remarks on ‘conspiracy' to topple CM Bhajan Lal Sharma create flutter in Rajasthan
Veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot's remarks claiming that a 'conspiracy' was being hatched to topple Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma created a flutter in Rajasthan's political circles on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party leaders reacted sharply and advised Mr. Gehlot to pay attention to the leadership crisis in his own party. Mr. Gehlot said while talking to journalist during his visit to Jodhpur that the BJP members, both in Rajasthan and in Delhi, were engaged in the task of dislodging Mr. Sharma, but the latter was 'acting ignorant', for which he would suffer. 'A massive conspiracy is underway. We are saying this repeatedly… But he [Mr. Sharma] is not cautious about it,' he said. Showing concern for Mr. Sharma, Mr. Gehlot, the former Chief Minister, said, 'He is a young first-time MLA appointed as the CM. It is a big deal. We believe he should be given a fair chance and allowed to maintain his position. Where is the need for changing the CM?' The people within the BJP were trying to pull Mr. Sharma down, he said. Mr. Sharma, the first-time MLA from Sanganer, was appointed the Chief Minister after his name was announced at the BJP legislature party meeting held here after the party's victory in the 2023 State Assembly election. Mr. Sharma claimed earlier this week that the BJP's one-and-a-half years of governance had outperformed the five-year tenure of Congress. Mr. Gehlot warned the Chief Minister about 'flatterers who have laid siege around him' and were constantly praising him by terming his government great. 'The reality is that the situation in Rajasthan is grave and the people are suffering. We raise the issues based on public sentiments, but if the CM remains in delusion, it is going to cause him trouble,' he said. Commenting on the BJP's observance of 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Mr. Gehlot said the Emergency was imposed in some 'special circumstances', but its result went against the Congress. 'We accepted that the people had turned against us, but the Congress won with a thumping majority under the wave of Indira Gandhi [in 1980],' he said. The BJP leaders said Mr. Gehlot was making an attempt to create confusion by his claim without any basis. Deputy CM Diya Kumari, Industries Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State for Energy Heeralal Nagar and Rajya Sabha MP Ghanshyam Tiwari criticised Mr. Gehlot's remarks and said he himself had faced rebellion in 2020 during his tenure.

Congress chief, BJP spar over Emergency
NEW DELHI: Launching a counter attack on the Modi government , Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged on Wednesday that an undeclared emergency prevailed in the country. He accused the BJP of staging a 'Constitution Murder Day' drama to hide its governance failure. Hitting back at PM Narendra Modi over his jibes on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Kharge said a government which has no tolerance and does not allow fraternity and liberty to prosper has no right to lecture others. Addressing a press conference at the Congress' Indira Bhawan, Kharge slammed the BJP-RSS and said those who 'played no role in the independence of the country, in framing the Constitution, and rejected BR Ambedkar's Constitution' are raking up the Emergency, 50 years after it was imposed. The same people are now talking of saving the Constitution, he added. Kharge said the Constitution is in danger because of PM Modi and his governance. The Congress chief also alleged that there is no freedom of expression and movement under the Modi government. 'Those (BJP-RSS) people who are talking of saving the Constitution are now raking up the Emergency after 50 years. It was something people had forgotten and they are now raking it up,' he said. Kharge said the BJP-RSS had rejected the Constitution stating that it did not have cultural aspects such as elements of the Manusmriti. 'They (BJP-RSS) did all this and have now been suddenly enlightened.' According to the Congress chief, the BJP is rattled with the Congress' 'save constitution' rallies. 'These people failed in governance and their failure is such that people are concerned over inflation, the government has no answer to unemployment, corruption and economic failure. To hide their lies and failure they have staged this drama,' Kharge said.
