PM Modi highlights Gumla youth's remarkable shift from extremism to fish farming in 'Mann Ki Baat'
The Prime Minister's remarks referred to Om Prakash Sahu, whose journey from a 'red rebel' to a 'blue warrior' was earlier reported by The Morning Standard in its July 6 edition. The PM praised Sahu for rejecting violence and becoming a catalyst for social change and employment in his village.
'Sometimes the brightest light emerges from where there is the most darkness. The best example of this is Gumla district of Jharkhand, where there was a time when this area was known for Maoist violence. The villages of Basia block were becoming deserted… people were living in the shadow of fear, there was no possibility of employment, lands were lying vacant and the youth were migrating... But then, quietly and with a lot of patience, a change began," said PM Modi.
"A youth named Om Prakash Sahu ji left the path of violence and started fish farming. Then he inspired many friends like him to do the same… his efforts had an impact… those who earlier held guns are now holding fishing nets,' added PM Modi.
He noted that Sahu's beginning was not easy. 'There were protests and life threats, but he did not lose courage. When Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) was introduced, he got new strength, received training from the government, and within no time, the blue revolution started in Gumla,' the Prime Minister added.
According to PM Modi, more than 150 families in the Basia block of Gumla are now engaged in fish farming, many of whom were allegedly once associated with Maoist organisations. 'Now, they are living a dignified life in their own village, creating employment for others,' he said.

PM to visit China for SCO Summit
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China to attend the regional summit SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) in Tianjin city from August 31 to September 1 - signalling another step towards normalising ties between the two nations that had frayed after the Galwan clash of 2020. Modi's last visit to China was in 2019. But he had met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024. The visit comes amid the imposition of stiff tariffs from US president Donald Trump and increasing pressure on India regarding oil purchase from Russia. There is expectation that under the circumstances, India's recalibration of ties with China is expected to act as a balancing factor for the US. India's participation would also be in the backdrop of Chinese support for Pakistan and the shadow of Pahalgam attack. In June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had refused to sign a joint statement at a defence minister's meet under SCO because it skipped any mention of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives and instead, mentioned Balochistan, tacitly accusing India of creating unrest there. Pahalgam's exclusion from the document appeared to have been done at the behest of Pakistan. The next month, though, China issued a strong statement against terror as the US designated The Resistance Front, a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, as a foreign terrorist organisation for its involvement in the Pahalgam attack. "China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism and strongly condemns the terrorist attack that occurred on April 22... China calls on regional countries to enhance counterterrorism cooperation and jointly maintain regional security and stability," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian. This time at the SCO, discussions with 10 member countries is expected to cover terrorism and regional security along with trade. Efforts will be made to restore stability and dialogue in India-China relations. There is a possibility that PM Modi will have bilateral meetings with Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the summit. In October 2024, PM Modi and Xi Jinping had met at the BRICS summit in Kazan. Following that, efforts to reduce border tensions between the two countries had gained momentum and the resumption of the Kailash-Mansarovar yatra had helped normalise ties to a great extent. Established in 2001, SCO aims to promote regional stability through cooperation. The bloc currently has 10 member states -- Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

"Get Fighter Plane From Modi Baba": A Special Ask By Eknath Shinde's Grandson
New Delhi: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his family on Wednesday, coming to Delhi especially for this meeting. The headliner, though, was his absent, five-year-old grandson. The Shinde family that met PM Modi included Mr Shinde's wife Lata Shinde, his MP son Shrikant Shinde and his wife Vrushali Shinde. "Fighter planes can be used for our fighting too," he said, indicating Maharashtra politics and the coming civic election in the state. Today as Mr Shinde came to Delhi, Uddhav Thackeray is also in the city with his family, come to attend the dinner meet of the India Alliance. "He came to Delhi to go to 10 Janpath and we are going to Lok Kalyan Marg, as told by Bala Saheb Thackeray," Mr Shinde quipped. Mr Shinde said he had presented an image of Lord Shankar to PM Modi to celebrate the success of Operation Mahadev - the anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir in which a terrorist involved in the Pahalgam massacre was killed. Asked what is the status of Operation Tiger -- said to be carried out to break the Shiv Sena UBT - Mr Shinde said, "we are talking about Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev. Not Operation Tiger".

Anti-BC Bill leaders staring at imminent political death: CM
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy led a massive dharna at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, demanding the President's assent to the BC reservation bills. He accused the Centre of being 'indifferent' to Telangana's repeated requests. If the bill is not granted assent, it will be clear that the BJP is against backward classes, he said. Addressing the maha dharna, the Chief Minister said that neither BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao nor BJP leaders N Ramachander Rao, Bandi Sanjay Kumar and G Kishan Reddy had challenged the 42 per cent BC reservation, but it came from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Union government. He said that the Congress party, which has undertaken this as a mission, will fight to the hilt to achieve the results. "We are not asking for a plot of land from your Gujarat. We have not asked for a drop of water from your Porbandar port. What is the heartburn of your Gujaratis, if we give 42 per cent reservation to the weaker sections on our soil? I am throwing a challenge from Jantar Mantar. Will the NDA government accept our demand? or will we have to hoist the tricolor flag on the Red Fort and make Rahul Gandhi the Prime Minister of the country to achieve 42 per cent reservation for OBCs?' he said, while taking aim at Modi. Revanth Reddy wanted to know who had given Modi and the BJP to trample on beliefs and bills. Describing Modi as a sworn enemy, he said that the Prime Minister has no intention of doing justice to the BCs. He said that the time has come for the people to teach the likes of Ramachander Rao, Sanjay Kumar and Kishan Reddy a lesson. Countering BRS working president K T Rama Rao, who described the dharna in Delhi as a 'drama', Revanth Reddy said that there was drama even in KTR's name. 'There is drama in your house, in your body, in your blood, and your family lives by playing dramas. In your house, one person is in favour of BCs, while the other is against them. The third person is somewhere in the middle. Why are you attached with Modi instead of standing by us? Have you lost your name and even your umbilical relationship with Telangana?' he asked The Chief Minister asserted that none could question the sincerity of the Congress leadership and Telangana stands as a role model for the country. He said that this Telangana model with caste census and 42 per cent reservation for BCs will create a tsunami-like ripples in national politics. And the NDA will be gobbled by Bay of Bengal. 'Even the RSS failed to persuade Modi to step down. Now it's time for Rahul Gandhi to unseat him in 2029,' he said. Revanth Reddy said that Rahul Gandhi has set the ball rolling as regards reservations to OBCs and a caste census. 'It is my responsibility to take this forward, along with our council of ministers. Those challenging this will be signing their own death sentences. The two bills we sent should be passed immediately. We will never come to Delhi again, but you will come to us,' he quipped.
