Foreign Minister Meets with Acting Head of United Nations Mission to Support Hodeida Agreement

Saba Yemen20-04-2025
Sana'a - Saba:
Foreign Minister and Expatriates Affairs, Jamal Amer, met today with the Acting Head of the United Nations Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA), Marie Yamashita.
During the meeting, Minister Amer emphasized that the U.S. aggression targeting civilian sites across various provinces constitutes a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
He pointed out that the targeting of Ras Issa Port and the bombing of medics is a fully-fledged war crime that must be investigated.
The Foreign Minister also noted that the U.S. airstrikes, particularly in frontline and coastal areas, indicate that the aggression is following a scorched-earth policy in preparation for a ground military operation, which poses a serious threat of escalating the situation beyond control.
He stressed the importance of delivering this message to the UN Secretary-General to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control and slipping from everyone's hands. He also emphasized the need for the UNMHA mission to adhere strictly to its mandate within Hodeidah Governorate and its districts, as any overreach would infringe on national sovereignty.
For her part, the Acting Head of UNMHA affirmed the UN's commitment to de-escalation and reliance on dialogue.
She added, "The mission will conduct a field visit to the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa, and Al-Salif to assess the situation on the ground."

UN Renews Call for De-escalation Between Israel & Houthis Amid Rising Tensions in Yemen

The United Nations has once again urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation following renewed hostilities between Israeli forces and Yemen's Houthi movement. The appeal comes in the wake of Israeli airstrikes targeting Sana'a International Airport and key Red Sea ports, and retaliatory missile launches by the Houthis aimed at Israeli territory. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure, stating that strikes on airports and ports 'deprive Yemenis of vital access to medical care, education, and religious travel,' especially as thousands prepare for the Hajj pilgrimage. He emphasized that both sides must uphold international humanitarian law and protect civilian lives and facilities. The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, recently concluded meetings in Muscat with regional officials and Houthi representatives, stressing the need to translate ceasefire agreements into lasting peace. He also called for the immediate release of UN and NGO personnel arbitrarily detained by Houthi authorities, warning that such actions undermine humanitarian operations across Yemen. Security Council members echoed the UN's concerns, with several delegations condemning Houthi attacks on commercial shipping and Israeli airstrikes on civilian targets. The Council urged both parties to return to dialogue and avoid dragging Yemen deeper into regional conflicts. The UN continues to advocate for a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, warning that 'every day without progress prolongs the suffering of millions' amid rising food insecurity and deteriorating public services.

Israel Builds New Target Bank in Yemen Amid Rising Tensions with Houthis

Israeli military sources have confirmed that Israel is actively constructing a new target bank in Yemen, aimed at identifying and striking strategic assets linked to the Houthis. The move comes in response to escalating missile and drone attacks launched from Houthi-controlled territories toward Israeli cities and infrastructure since the outbreak of the Gaza war. According to a senior Israeli defense official quoted by Sky News Arabia, the target bank includes missile launch platforms, drone facilities, logistics hubs, and Red Sea ports allegedly used for arms smuggling. The official emphasized that Israel is prepared to deliver 'painful strikes' and has already demonstrated its reach in previous operations against Iranian-linked sites. Recent Israeli drone strikes on Hodeida Port reportedly targeted fuel depots, heavy machinery, and tugboats, with the aim of preventing reconstruction and disrupting Houthi supply chains. The drones were launched from Israeli bases to minimize risks to pilots during long-range missions. Despite the intensifying campaign, Israeli officials ruled out replicating the 'Hezbollah model' in Yemen, citing limited intelligence and geographic distance as major constraints. 'We're not looking to engage in a prolonged ground strategy,' the source said, 'but we will continue to degrade their capabilities.' The Houthis, for their part, have vowed to continue their attacks in solidarity with Gaza, claiming responsibility for dozens of missile launches toward Israeli territory. The UN has expressed concern over the widening scope of the conflict and its impact on regional stability.

Israeli media Reports 63 Houthi Missiles Launched from Yemen Toward Israel

Israeli public radio has revealed that 63 missiles have been launched by Yemen's Houthi movement toward Israeli territory since the resuming of the Gaza war, marking a dramatic escalation in cross-border hostilities. The report, citing military sources, underscores the growing threat posed by Iran-backed groups operating far beyond Israel's immediate borders. According to the broadcast, the missiles—ranging from short-range projectiles to advanced ballistic systems—were fired from Houthi-controlled areas in northern Yemen, with many targeting strategic sites such as Ben Gurion Airport, Eilat Port, and military bases in southern Israel. While most were intercepted by Israel's air defense systems, several caused disruptions to air traffic and triggered nationwide alerts. The Israeli military confirmed the latest incident on Tuesday, stating that a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted over central Israel, prompting sirens in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility, describing the attacks as part of a broader campaign in support of Palestinians in Gaza. The UN has expressed concern over the widening scope of the conflict, urging restraint and protection of civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, Israeli officials have vowed to intensify retaliatory measures, with Defense Minister Israel Katz warning that 'Yemen's fate will mirror that of any state that threatens Israel's sovereignty.'
