'Another blow to Indian diplomacy': Congress flays Centre amid ASEAN 'displeasure' over Goyal's remarks

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday slammed the government over the reported displeasure expressed by the ASEAN co-chair for the review of India FTA following Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's 'B-Team of China' remark, and said it was "another blow" to Indian diplomacy.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared on X a media report which claimed that the ASEAN co-chair for the review of India FTA has expressed displeasure over Goyal's recent remarks, describing several countries in the region as a "B team of China."
In his post on X, Ramesh said, "India has very close civilizational, cultural, economic, and political ties with the 10-nation ASEAN Group--Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. ASEAN, that came into being almost six decades back, has a combined GDP just slightly lower than that of India."
The Union Commerce and Industry Minister dismisses them as the "B team of China", he said.
"ASEAN now ticks him off. Indian diplomacy suffers yet another blow. This was needless," Ramesh added.
Last week, speaking at the India Global Forum (IGF) session on UK-India Science, Technology and Innovation Collaboration at the Science Museum in London, Goyal had said, "There was a point of time 15 years ago when we were more focused on doing FTAs with countries who were our competitors. So if I am doing an ASEAN agreement, it really is silly because (that is) opening up my market to my competitors, many of whom have now become the B team of China."
The Congress had slammed Goyal for his remarks against the India-ASEAN trade agreements, saying labelling these countries as "B team of China" is "irresponsible and insulting."
In a statement, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma had said Goyal's statement "belittling India ASEAN Trade Agreements is unwarranted, ill advised and unfortunate."

We all have to bow to high command's decisions

Bengaluru: Reactingto Minister for Cooperation K.N. Rajanna's resignation, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said on Monday that all the leaders and workers bow to the high command's decisions. 'Rajanna is my close friend. We have pursued politics together for 25 years. I am also pained. Nothing can be done; it is a party decision. You all know the context in which this decision has been taken. We all have to bow to the decision of the party high command,' said Shivakumar. He said that he was informed about the decision by the Chief Minister. 'Ministers and MLAs do not come under my jurisdiction. In the case of MLAs, we can issue notices and take minor actions, but the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader controls the legislators,' he claimed. Meanwhile, sources said that Monday's development has strengthened Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar's position within the Congress party over Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Rajanna, a close associate of Siddaramaiah, had openly supported Siddaramaiah while targeting Shivakumar. Rajanna, who was the State Cooperation Minister, was asked to submit his resignation after his remark against the LoP Rahul Gandhi's press conference on the voter fraud. 'If there was voter fraud, the state Congress should have pointed it out much earlier,' he had said. Meanwhile, taking to social media X, BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra said that Rajanna, a senior ST leader and Cooperation Minister, was removed from the cabinet for merely speaking the truth - an honest admission which every Kannadiga knows. 'Yet in the Congress party, truth is treated as a threat, especially when it comes from a leader of a marginalised community whose voice they have long tried to silence.' 'This is the true face of Congress, anti-Dalit, anti-ST, anti-democratic and anti-truth. It also exposes the hollowness of Siddaramaiah's claims of championing the AHINDA cause. When leaders from these communities are targeted, he does not defend them. Instead, he bows to the diktats of the Delhi High Command to safeguard his own position as Chief Minister,' said Vijayendra.

Buy or sell: Vaishali Parekh recommends three stocks to buy today — 12 August 2025

Buy or sell stocks: After sharp selling on Friday last week, the Indian stock market witnessed strong value buying on Monday. The Nifty 50 index gained 221 points at 24,585, the BSE Sensex finished 746 points higher at 80,604, while the Bank Nifty index ended 505 points northward at 55,510. Leading the charge among the Nifty's top performers were Adani Enterprises, Tata Motors, and Eternal. Conversely, it was a tougher session for Hero MotoCorp, BEL, and Bharti Airtel, which ended as the major losers within the Nifty pack. Trading volumes in the NSE cash market were sharply lower by 19% compared to last Friday. With the sole exception of Nifty Consumer Durables, all other sectoral indices ended the day in the green. Nifty PSU Banks, Realty, Healthcare, and Auto led the charge, recording the highest gains and signalling a widespread return of investor confidence. Vaishali Parekh, Vice President — Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher, believes Indian stock market sentiment has turned positive after the decent pullback in the Nifty 50 index from 24,350 levels. The Prabhudas Lilladher expert said the key benchmark index has ended close to 24,600, and the 50-stock index is facing a hurdle at 24,650. Speaking on the outlook of the Nifty 50 index, Vaishali Parekh said, "The Nifty 50 index after scaling a low of 24350 in the zone in the previous session, the index witnessed a significant pullback to end near the 24,600 zone with sentiment eased out to some extent, and a decisive breach above the 24,630 zone would be required to improve the bias. The index would have the near-term support of 24,300, which needs to be sustained, and we expect further improvement in the coming sessions." On the outlook of the Bank Nifty today, Parekh said, "The Bank Nifty index, witnessing a recovery, moved with support of the 100-DEMA level of 54,950 to improve the bias. The index would have the tough resistance zone near the 56,000 level, while on the downside, the 54,900 zone shall be positioned as the crucial support level that needs to be sustained." Parekh said that the Nifty 50 index's immediate support is at 24,400, while the resistance is at 24,800. The Bank Nifty's daily range is 54,800 to 56,200.
