Brutal gangland executions in Spain discussed by Daily Record crime team
Crime Reporter Norman Silvester speaks at length about the Spain shootings in a new crime podcast launched by the Record this week. Criminal Record: The Lyons and Daniels gangland feud explained after hoods shot dead in Spanish bar The team at Criminal Record met today to discuss the brutal gangland killings after Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr were gunned down in Spain. The two senior Lyons clan members were executed by a gunman at Monaghan's Bar in the Costa Del Sol on Saturday night. The key lieutenants were assassinated outside Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola amid a violent turf war raging across Scotland since March. In a brand new podcast, which has been launched by the Record this week, crime reporter Norman Silvester spoke about the killings that shocked the country. Silvester spoke in detail about what happened on the night as we discussed chilling CCTV footage which showed the gunman inside Monaghan's bar as the pair were assassinated. The crime specialist then discussed at length the history of the Lyons gang and their bloody feud with the Daniels clan - which dates back more than 20 years. As Silvester explains, it is claimed the feud between the two crime families first began over control of drugs turf. In 2001 a large stash of Daniels' cocaine was stolen from a house in the Milton area of Glasgow and sold on to the Lyons. The rivalry between the two crime family networks has seen shootings, stabbings, hit and runs, firebomb attacks, police corruption and drug trafficking busts. We also discussed the possibility that the shootings could be linked to Scotland's ongoing gangland war which broke out earlier this year. Silvester spoke about how the underworld feud first erupted after Edinburgh kingpin Mark Richardson's cronies stole a £500,000 stash of cocaine from a Dubai-based "Mr Big" known as Ross McGill, using fake cash. The Lyons gang were thought to be supporting Dubai-based McGill who waged a war on Mark Richardson - and associates the Daniels family. Speaking on the Australian TV show 'Today', Benny said: "I just told him, 'I'm going to have a wedding and you're going to come to the wedding. "Eventually Ed will come to our wedding when we do have one, but unfortunately we have not scheduled one yet - but we will!" After Benny and Selena got engaged, they created songs that eventually ended up on their first joint album, 'I Said I Love You First', which was released in March, but they had never deliberately planned to make such a project together. Speaking about how their LP came to fruition, Benny said: "We just started making music in our house as a little fun activity and then all of a sudden we had one song, then two songs, then three songs, then four songs. During the recording process, a bird caused Benny and Selena to fight. Speaking to Kent 'Smallzy' Small on the latest episode of the 'Smallzy's Surgery' podcast, he said: "The biggest fight we had making the record is we did it at home, and there were birds that would chirp only when she was recording and never any time else. "And I didn't believe her for the first two weeks." Selena recently revealed she does not like to refer to Benny as her fiance. Appearing with her partner on the 'Table Manners' podcast in April, the 32-year-old singer explained: "[Calling him my fiance is] so strange. "I just say, my partner or Benny. But the other day, I caught myself saying 'Well, my boyfriend ...' but that's not quite why we're there." And after he and Selena shared their first kiss, Benny knew he wanted to "have a baby" with his lover. Appearing on Spotify's 'Countdown To' series in March, he said: "I knew right after we kissed, I was like, 'Oh wow. I'm probably going to marry this person'. Scottish accents may be 'hard to understand' but they could help you learn Dutch
Scottish accents are notoriously hard to follow but they could help you learn a new language faster The Scottish accent is known for being one of the hardest in the world to understand. Whether it's rolling your 'R's speaking in harsher, guttural sounds, or using too much slang, we can certainly leave a lot of people flummoxed. Half of Americans say the Scottish accent is the toughest to get their head round, with the Glaswegian accent always coming up as the one most likely to raise an eyebrow and leaving an out-of-towner particularly confused. However, new research from Preply is turning that perception on its head. The study suggests that the Glaswegian accent could actually offer an unexpected advantage - learning languages faster, thanks to its characteristics. The distinct rhythm and cadence of Glaswegian speech align with languages like German, and Dutch, where strong emphasis on syllables and guttural sounds can be important in conveying meaning. This makes it easier for Glaswegian speakers to adapt to languages with similar speech patterns. The Glaswegian accent has been showcased on the world stage many times by the likes of comics Billy Connolly and Kevin Bridges. But how might region accents improve language skills? "Generally, accents can help with language learning because they train your ear to recognise and reproduce sounds," Anna Pyshna, spokesperson at Preply, explained. "At the beginner level, language is mostly oral-oriented - you don't need perfect grammar, but it helps to know how to pronounce common words. "Ultimately, accents are not just about how we speak, they shape our ability to produce certain sounds." Three other British accents - Geordie, Scouse, and Brummie - were also highlighted in the study, each offering unique phonetic traits that support language learning in different ways. Folk from Newcastle have a glottal stop - a sound made by closing the vocal chords. This helps with languages including Danish, Czech, and even Hebrew, and Thai. Liverpool residents speak with a rolled 'r' sound, like in Spanish, Russian and Italian. Scouse speakers find it easier to master the trilled 'r' pronunciation. Its rising and falling tones are also well suited to Welsh, Irish, and Cantonese. Elsewhere, over in Birmingham, people speak in a monotone nature with long stretches on the same note. This will help if Brummies want to have a stab at Finnish or Russian. What's more, to expose more people to different accents, Preply has launched a unique Spotify series of accent-based sleep soundscapes, using Geordie, Scouse, Glaswegian, and Brummie voices. This is designed to boost language retention through passive auditory learning, as studies show that during deep sleep, the brain can keep forming new linguistic associations, especially when exposed to familiar phonetic rhythms. Not only will this help Glaswegians pick up new languages more intuitively, but it will help others tune their ear to the Glaswegian accent and appreciate its linguistic value - and make misunderstandings a thing of the past.
