Rams' 25 most important players for 2025 – No. 1: QB Matthew Stafford

USA Today6 days ago
In the days leading up to training camp, we've ranked the Los Angeles Rams' 25 most important players for the 2025 season. On the eve of rookies and veterans both reporting to Loyola Marymount University, we've officially reached the final player on our list.
Unsurprisingly, the Rams' most important player is the guy who led them to a Super Bowl win in his first season with the team, putting himself in the Hall of Fame conversation now that he's got a ring. It is, of course, Matthew Stafford.
He's still one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL at this stage of his career, being voted the sixth-best QB by executives, coaches and scouts from around the league. The Rams resolved his contract dispute this offseason by giving him a well-deserved raise, keeping him in Los Angeles for at least one more year.
The Rams will only go as far as Stafford can take them, despite the fact that they have a great young defense and a cast of offensive playmakers to rival any team's. If Stafford can stay healthy, the Rams will most likely be in contention.
How he got here
The Rams acquired Stafford in a blockbuster trade four years ago, sending Jared Goff and draft picks to the Detroit Lions in exchange for the veteran quarterback. Stafford has since signed two contract extensions, the most recent of which came this year when he received $80 million in new money, including $40 million fully guaranteed.
2024 stats
16 games (16 starts): 65.8% completion rate, 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 93.7 passer rating
Projected role
Stafford is QB1, obviously. It's the role he's held since the minute he was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2009, never relinquishing his starting spot for anything other than injury (or rest). He's the Rams' signal caller and leader on offense, getting everyone organized and on the same page before the snap.
Stafford has stayed healthy for the last two years, only missing one game since 2023 because of injury. He sat out Week 18 in each of the last two seasons when the Rams rested their top players before the postseason, but other than that, he's only been sidelined for one game due to injury.
Why he's important
No position in sports is more closely linked to a team's success than quarterback. It's arguably the most difficult position to play, too, with all of the pre- and post-snap processing a quarterback has to do.
The Rams are a legitimate Super Bowl contender with Stafford on the field, just as they were last season when they nearly took down the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round. Without Stafford, they'd probably be a fringe playoff team.
Sure, Jimmy Garoppolo is a quality backup to have, but he's not close to being the player that Stafford is. Stafford still has all the talent in the world as a passer, which Davante Adams alluded to this offseason, having worked with No. 9 for the first time in his career.
He's also incredibly smart, having seen every type of coverage and defense imaginable. That's the benefit of having such an experienced quarterback under center, and it's part of what makes Stafford so dangerous every time he steps on the field.

After coming out of nowhere to make the playoffs last season, Sean Payton and company are looking to take another step towards Super Bowl contention. They have the talent to make some noise in the AFC, but health will be a huge factor. Unfortunately, the team suffered a brutal injury update on Sunday. Read more: Jets Linked to Surprise QB Trade to Challenge Justin Fields According to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Sanders has suffered a tendon injury in his foot that will keep him out for a prolonged period of time. "Broncos LB Drew Sanders, an up-and-coming defender, suffered a tendon injury in his foot in practice that will keep him out an extended period of time, sources say post-MRI," Rapoport wrote on X. "Sanders is not expected back before the season begins and further testing will determine what's next." Not only will he miss time during training camp and the preseason, he isn't expected to begin the season on the field. That is a tough break for the Broncos. During the 2024 NFL season with Denver, Sanders only played in four games. He totaled eight tackles and a sack. Back in his rookie season with the Broncos, he racked up 24 tackles and a fumble recovery. Sanders is just 23 years old. He was the No. 67 overall pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft by Denver. While his future is still bright, his absence is disappointing for the team. Dre Greenlaw, one of the team's big free agency additions, suffered a torn quadriceps injury that will likely sideline him for a portion of the 2025 season. Denver will need other players to step up to help fill some gaps due to injury. Hopefully, the team will be able to get everyone back to full health early on in the year. It will be interesting to see if the Broncos make any late-offseason moves to bring in more talent at the linebacker position. Bills' Josh Allen Sends Clear Message on What Drives Him This Season

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Buffalo Bills and superstar quarterback Josh Allen are headed into the 2025 NFL season with only one goal in mind. Nothing but a Super Bowl would make the upcoming campaign count as a success. Last season, the Bills were just one win away from the big game. Unfortunately, they lost to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game. In recent years, Buffalo has looked the part of a Super Bowl favorite on multiple occasions. The team simply has not been able to get over the hump. "That's the only thing on my mind in camp, is just like, what can we do to bring a Lombardi trophy home?" Allen said. Allen put together the best season of his career last year. He won the NFL MVP, but that didn't mean much to him. Without a championship, the MVP was simply another award, although he was happy to win it. Throughout the course of the year, Allen played in 16 games. He completed 63.6 percent of his pass attempts for 3,731 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, while also racking up 531 yards and 12 more touchdowns on the ground. At 29 years old, Allen seems to have a new sense of urgency. He knows that a championship window can close at any time. They gave him a massive six-year, $330 million contract. Now, it's time for him to take his game up to another level and bring home a championship. Of course, that is easier said than done and will take a complete team effort. Allen and the rest of the Buffalo roster are highly motivated to get the job done this year. It will be interesting to see what the Bills are able to do this season. Allen's comments are a clear message to both his own team and the rest of the NFL that. Buffalo will be a team to be reckoned with. For more on the Buffalo Bills and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
