Rays ace Shane McClanahan takes step toward his big league return after shutout inning in minors
McClanahan, who last pitched in the majors on Aug. 2, 2023, before undergoing his second Tommy John surgery, also struck out a batter and walked one.
McClanahan, a 28-year-old left-hander, was on schedule to start the Rays' season opener this year before leaving his final spring training start because of an inflamed nerve in his left triceps.
Tampa Bay drafted McClanahan in the first round in 2018. He went 10-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 25 starts in his first big league season in 2021, finishing seventh in voting for AL Rookie of the Year.
The two-time All-Star went 11-2 with a 3.29 ERA in 21 starts before he got hurt in 2023.

Clement's three-run home run gave Toronto a 4-1 lead and Loperfido followed with a soaring, solo shot to right field. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a game-tying double in the sixth to bring home the first of five runs in the inning. Guerrero's RBI double in the four-run seventh helped the Blue Jays pull away with a 9-1 lead. The Blue Jays didn't let up, going ahead 11-1 in the eighth on Nathan Lukes' two-run homer. Jahmai Jones hit a solo homer to give Detroit a 1-0 lead in the first. The Tigers didn't generate more offense until it was too late in the ninth, when Spencer Torkeson hit his 22nd homer in a three-run inning against right-hander Chad Green. Eric Lauer (6-2) allowed one run on five hits without a walk while striking out six in a season-high eight innings. Reese Olson (4-4) gave up five runs on six hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings after throwing four scoreless innings. Dietrich Enns replaced him and got roughed up, allowing four runs. Geoff Hartlieb gave up two more runs in one inning after being recalled from Triple-A Toledo to replace right-hander Carlos Hernandez, who was designated for assignment. The Houston Astros have seen a few of their key offensive players go down with injury this season. With a week until the MLB trade deadline, the team is exploring options to bolster the roster, which has dealt with such injuries. This report from Romero comes a little after the Seattle Mariners swung a deal for another Arizona Diamondbacks star in Josh Naylor. But the Mariners are still in on Suarez, and now, the Astros are interested in him too. Suarez, the 34-year-old third baseman, has been on a tear this season. He has 36 home runs, an MLB-leading 86 RBIs, and a .918 OPS. He also earned his second career All-Star nod and reached 300 career home runs this season. But, in the final year of his $79 million deal, and with the Diamondbacks' struggles, Suarez has become one of the hottest commodities at the trade deadline. For the talk surrounding the Astros' farm system being weak, this report suggests that the Astros could swing a deal for Suarez, one of the top names on the market at this trade deadline. With a week to go until the deadline, Houston will have a chance to make a push for Suarez. While the cost may be high, Romero's report indicates that they have enough to land him. The Astros, amid Paredes' injury, are interested in Suarez and have the trade capital to bring him to Houston. It'd be a huge move, but the Astros are reportedly interested in making such a move happen. Indiana's Caitlin Clark remains sidelined with a groin injury, and the Fever said Thursday there was no timetable for her return. No further injuries were discovered during medical tests this week. Howard finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Boston had 13 points and 10 boards. Sophie Cunningham scored 15 points.
