Bloomberg19-02-2025
Welcome to the CEO Diet, a monthly series in Bloomberg Businessweek, where executives from around the world tell us how they manage their time in and out of the office. In recent months, we've touched on their preferred breakfast, exercise routine, drink order, and weekend activity. Now, we're talking about their best tips for packing a bag—big or, preferably, small. You'll see a predilection for functionality, from clothes to snacks, and the universal importance of a travel pillow.
Before she became CEO of the famed holistic wellness brand Naturopathica, Cathy O'Brien worked at Arista records with stars like Notorious BIG and Usher, then in beauty at Estée Lauder and Jo Malone. Her diverse background informs her specific packing routine, starting with clothes: 'Veronica Beard Beverly jeans (they're form-fitting and flattering for girls with long legs); gray Adidas sneakers; a white dress; tall black Louboutin boots; a white and a black Nili Lotan button-down; a pair of black Eberjey pajamas; Bombas slippers; diamond studs.' Her supplementary essentials cover health and the random opportunity to socialize. She brings 'vitamins and my anti-estrogen pill, for the breast cancer thing (I was diagnosed in 2023 and completed radiation last May). A travel backgammon set and deck of cards—always fun for the plane or to do over drinks with a friend or colleague.'

We know it's only August, but you need to get in the festive spirit ASAP if you want to get your hands on a beauty advent calendar this year as they are already on sale and flying off shelves (yes, really). Harrods has already opened pre-orders for its 2025 options (with one having already sold out), Boots has also dropped a range of more affordable calendars, including Liz Earle, Ted Baker and Soap & Glory. Next up to launch its 2025 iteration is Fortnum & Mason who have just dropped its Fortnum's Beauty Advent Calendar 2025, which has been newly reimagined with a beautiful (and fully recyclable) design. But this year's offers even better value, as the 2024 calendar included £1,080 worth of products, whereas this year's is packed with £1,149 - that's a whopping £884 saving. The 10 Best Grapefruit Perfumes For Summer And Beyond

Growing up, my grandmother always paired my breakfast (usually eggs) with a freshly sliced half of a grapefruit. Its sharp, bitter taste was overwhelming, so I'd sneak a sprinkle of brown sugar on top to make it more palatable. Over time, that small act of rebellion became a genuine fixation, and grapefruit became my favourite fruit. However, after taking a hiatus from citrus for years, I welcomed it back into my life as an adult in a new form: perfume. While many gravitate toward soft florals (jasmine, rose, iris), deep woods (oud, cedarwood, vetiver), or indulgent gourmands (caramel, coffee, vanilla), there's a distinct group—myself included—who crave the vibrant, tangy energy of citrus. Coffee is great, but have you ever enveloped yourself in the bright, sparkling zest of a grapefruit fragrance? In perfumery, grapefruit isn't as tart or bracing as biting into the real thing. When blended with other citrus, it emerges as the fresh, juicy, and refined sister to orange, lemon, or tangerine. Not to mention, it becomes even more addictive when combined with florals and herbaceous notes that create an uplifting scent that lingers beautifully on the skin as it settles. The ELLE UK beauty team is typically divided on what notes we love, but many of us agree that grapefruit perfumes are a worthy addition to citrus collections. After polling editors and combing through customer reviews, I landed on the following grapefruit perfumes that are fresher than a cold glass of OJ. If someone would describe your aura as soft, delicate, and flirty, Chance by Chanel is your olfactory equivalent. This scent makes you want to hug yourself tight because of how dreamy you smell, courtesy of light musks and fruity tones. The first bite of a nectar is always the juiciest, as is the initial spritz of this perfume. True to its bright packaging, Perseus lingers on the skin like tangy pulp on the lips after a bite, unfurling layers of other fruity and woody notes as it settles. At first glance, you might mistake this perfume for cucumber or celery water, but even without the greens, it is just as refreshing as fresh juice. Instead, it's packed with grapefruit, rose, and pink peppercorn, making it light and energising, as well as sweet. Whenever you want to escape to Italy, take Fico di Amalfi for a spin, or should I say spritz. Behind the blue vial are invigorating notes that energise you instantly and evoke images of gardens, flowers, and water. Its blissful scent evokes memories of long, hot summers spent under a fig tree, sheltering in its shade from the sun. You can't talk grapefruit perfumes without mentioning the OG. Jo Malone's Grapefruit is earthier than most, anchored by a blend of peppers and mints. The bottom line? It is fresh, light, and full of crisp citrus notes. What is not to love? Crispy, zesty, and airy, Hesperides is almost too refreshing to be just a perfume. Think of a cold lemonade or a citrus salad—the combination of lemon and grapefruit makes this the perfect springtime to summer transitional scent. The grapefruit in this scent only pays a brief visit to allow the heavier, spicier notes their own time to shine. Halfeti isn't for the faint of heart—it's for those who favour bold notes and don't mind being stopped repeatedly for compliments. Cleopatra is an olfactory exploration of the traits she's believed to have possessed. It's strong, seductive, and alluring in the most sophisticated way. It has rich, sophisticated notes of vanilla musk mixed with sweet jasmine that anchor the grapefruit bitters. Citrus and nectar mingle in Creed's Spring Flower, which swirls in a medley of soft petals, creating a scent as soft and sensual as the powder pink bottle. It's fresh and feminine, an easy everyday wear that is sure to turn heads Nerisha Penrose is the Beauty Commerce Editor at Prior to joining the team, she was an Editorial Fellow at In her current role, she helps lead coverage on makeup, skin care, hair, and fragrances.
