Retired cops & Armymen to guard reclaimed land near Noida airport
Noida: Illegal occupation and construction activities are rampant around upcoming Noida International Airport, where land demand is at its peak. Against this backdrop, retired DSP-rank officers and teams of Army personnel (retired) are being roped in to protect land owned by Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) from illegal colonisers and land mafias.
YEIDA's jurisdiction spans six districts — Gautam Budh Nagar, Bulandshahr, Hathras, Aligarh, Mathura and Agra. With the rapid development of major infrastructure projects such as the airport and the upcoming Film City, Logistic Park and Heritage City, land prices have surged dramatically, making these regions a prime target for land grabbing and unauthorised real estate activity. In response to the growing threat, YEIDA has introduced a comprehensive strategy to curb such activities before they escalate further.
The deputy superintendent of police-rank officers and Army personnel (retd) will be deployed to patrol and safeguard high-value and sensitive areas near the airport. Three key locations — Jewar, Vrindavan and Tappal — have been identified for the patrol in the new security setup. Anti-encroachment drives will now be conducted regularly every Tuesday as well. Over the past three years, the Authority carried out about 25 major anti-encroachment operations, reclaiming land valued at nearly Rs 2,500 crore from illegal possession.
YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh said, "Each of these three areas will get a team of 10 ex-servicemen. A retired DSP-level officer will lead each team. The teams will patrol using govt vehicles. They will be posted at specific locations and will guard the area to prevent any illegal activity." The initiative comes in the wake of a major crackdown last Thursday, during which YEIDA, in coordination with Aligarh's district administration and police, freed over 27 hectares of encroached land in three villages of Aligarh: Tappal, Sirsedhi and Helupur.
The market value of the reclaimed land is estimated to be over Rs 407 crore.
Officials said FIRs have been filed against 57 persons in Aligarh for their involvement in illegal constructions alone.

Karnataka CM Announces Financial Relief And Investigation Following Fatal RCB Victory Celebration Crush
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has declared the deadly crowd crush during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations an "unforeseen catastrophe" while announcing immediate relief measures and launching an official investigation. The tragedy at Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left numerous others injured when massive crowds gathered to celebrate the team's championship win. During a media briefing, Siddaramaiah revealed that the Karnataka State Cricket Association, not the state government, had organized the stadium event. He emphasized the unprecedented nature of the crowd turnout, explaining that while the venue's maximum capacity is 35,000 spectators, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people converged on the location. The Chief Minister noted a stark contrast with another large gathering at Vidhana Soudha, where approximately 100,000 people assembled without incident. "Nobody anticipated this outcome, including the Cricket Association," Siddaramaiah stated, while referencing similar incidents that have occurred elsewhere, including at religious gatherings like the Kumbh Mela. He clarified that his comparison was not intended to minimize the current tragedy. The Chief Minister announced comprehensive support measures for affected families, including Rs 10 lakh compensation for each victim's relatives and complimentary medical care for all injured individuals. He confirmed that a Deputy Commissioner-level investigation has been initiated to examine the circumstances leading to the disaster. Siddaramiah personally visited Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals to meet with the injured and their families, providing updates on their condition. "I consulted with medical staff. All injured persons are now stable," he reported during his press conference. Reflecting on the incident's impact, the Chief Minister posted on social media that "A moment of celebration has been overshadowed by grief," expressing his condolences to the bereaved families. He revealed that the government had previously declined requests for a comprehensive victory parade specifically due to safety concerns about crowd management. The incident unfolded Wednesday evening as enthusiastic supporters gathered outside the stadium to commemorate RCB's long-awaited IPL championship victory. Despite prior awareness of potential overcrowding issues, the massive turnout created dangerous conditions that ultimately resulted in the fatal crush and multiple serious injuries.

Kannada Actress's Family Challenges Prolonged Custody In Karnataka High Court Despite Court-Approved Release
The mother of Kannada film actress Ranya Rao has approached the Karnataka High Court through a habeas corpus petition, questioning the legal basis for her daughter's ongoing imprisonment in a major gold trafficking case. Despite receiving court approval for release, the actress remains behind bars due to overlapping legal proceedings. Rao received authorization for release on May 20 from the Special Court for Economic Offences, but her freedom has been blocked by additional charges filed under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 (Cofeposa). This separate legal framework allows authorities to maintain custody of individuals suspected of smuggling activities that threaten foreign exchange conservation. The actress was apprehended at Bengaluru airport on March 3 following allegations of attempting to transport 14.8 kilograms of gold from Dubai. According to official reports, a comprehensive physical examination revealed gold bars strategically hidden around her body using medical bandages and tissues, particularly around her waist and leg areas. Investigators also discovered additional gold pieces concealed within her footwear and clothing pockets. The confiscated precious metal, confirmed to be 24-carat quality, carried an estimated value exceeding Rs 12.56 crore. Legal proceedings have been initiated against Rao under both the Customs Act and the Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act. During recent court proceedings, Additional Solicitor General Aravind Kamath informed the court that formal objections had been submitted regarding the case. The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 18. The Special Court for Economic Offences had granted release to both Rao and co-accused Tarun Kondaru Raju last month, requiring each to provide two guarantors and post a Rs 2 lakh security bond. The release conditions included restrictions on international travel and prohibitions against repeating similar offenses. Justice Vishwanath C Gowdar approved the release after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence failed to file charges within the required timeframe. However, the Cofeposa legislation enables authorities to maintain preventive detention for individuals suspected of engaging in smuggling operations or activities that could harm foreign exchange stability, effectively overriding the earlier bail decision. This legal mechanism has resulted in Rao's continued incarceration despite the court's initial approval for her release.

Housefull 5 India Advance Booking Update: Akshay Kumar's comic caper to sell in the vicinity of 40000 tickets in top chains with a day to go
Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 is gearing up for its big release on June 6, 2025. The advance bookings for the comic caper kicked off a few days ago and here is how the bookings are in India's top multiplex chains, PVRInox and Cinepolis. As of 10 PM on June 4, the film has sold 37,000 tickets. By the end of the day, Housefull 5 is expected to hit 40,000 tickets. With just one day left, the makers are hoping for a massive surge to reach at least 100,000 tickets in these chains. The advance bookings for the Akshay Kumar starrer started on June 1. Initially, the target was to sell 125,000 to 150,000 tickets in PVRInox and Cinepolis. However, the pace has been slower than expected. As of now, the film is aiming for a more realistic 100,000 tickets by Thursday night. This would set the stage for a respectable opening day collection of Rs 20 crore net in India. While Rs 20 crore is a not exactly a bad start, a film of Housefull 5's scale, boasting a Rs 225 crore budget, needs a bigger opening to make waves. A Rs 25-30 crore start would be ideal, but you take what you get. Outside the top chains, the booking trend is stronger. Chains like Rajhans, MovieMax, and Miraj are seeing better pre-sales. This suggests that Housefull 5 could see good walk-in numbers on release day, especially in smaller towns. The weekend bookings looks promising. Advance bookings for Saturday (Bakri Eid) and Sunday are picking up strongly. Family audiences are expected to turn up in big numbers, boosting the film's prospects. If the comedy lands well and the murder-mystery intrigue around the dual climaxes clicks, Housefull 5 could see a big jump over the weekend. Financially, Housefull 5 is in a strong position. The film has already recovered nearly 60 percent of its budget, that is around Rs 135 crore, through non-theatrical sources like satellite rights, digital streaming, and music deals. This gives the makers a safety net. To break even, the film needs to gross Rs 275 crore worldwide. To be declared a hit, it must cross Rs 325 crore globally. With a massive release across 5,000 screens in India, the stage is set for a big theatrical run. The unique strategy of releasing two versions with different climaxes should spark discussions after the release. This could possibly also drive repeat viewings, adding to the box office haul. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, Housefull 5 features a star-studded cast that also includes Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, and Jacqueline Fernandez among others. The franchise's brand value and the promise of a laugh riot on a luxury cruise are key draws. With good international pre-sales and a holiday weekend ahead, Housefull 5 is poised for a reasonable global start.
