'Guitar guy' shown hitching ride in dangerous stunt on San Diego freeway

USA Today21-07-2025
Footage has surfaced showing a man standing on the back step of a U-Haul truck while clutching a guitar as the vehicle traversed a San Diego-area freeway.
619NewsMedia shared the footage in an Instagram post titled, 'Guitar Guy Spotted.' The outlet explained that the dangerous activity was documented by a motorist on the northbound 125 Freeway in Spring Valley. (Swipe through the accompanying post to view the footage.)
'It's unclear whether the man was intentionally hitchhiking or if he had jumped onto the vehicle at some point during its route,' 619NewsMedia remarked.
According to the California Highway Patrol, no emergency calls were made around this time, so the hitchhiker apparently made it safely through the area.
However, and obviously, this type of activity is perilous and illegal, and not advisable.
More from 619NewsMedia: 'While the full context is unclear, officials emphasize that riding on the exterior of a moving vehicle is extremely unsafe and could have led to serious injury or worse.'

Regional probation service 'requires improvement' over failure to assess risks to victims

A regional probation service has been graded 'requires improvement' overall after an inspection found inadequate work in assessing risks to actual and potential victims. HM Inspectorate of Probation found the North Tyneside and Northumberland Probation Delivery Unit's assessments of those on probation were not sufficiently focused on keeping other people safe. According to the inspection's findings, probation workers had been unable to access enough detailed information to make informed assessments on offenders. The report found: READ MORE: The 28 North East towns and streets that will be targeted by extra police this summer READ MORE: 'Arrogant' Peterlee businessman who assaulted ex-partner breached restraining order four years later on Instagram Domestic abuse information was not requested in six out of 50 relevant safeguarding cases Child safeguarding information was not requested in 8 out of 49 safeguarding cases Domestic abuse information received was 'insufficient' in 30% of cases It was also noted the service had experienced difficulty in obtaining information from the Police when the PDU requested more detailed information. The inspectorate stated: 'Even when practitioners obtained information from these agencies, they did not use it consistently when assessing risk of harm. Disappointingly, too free assessment focused on keeping people safe. Just 50% of cases we inspected clearly identified and analysed risk of harm to others, and just over half of relevant cases (24/47) lacked sufficient analysis of specific concerns and risks to actual and potential victims." In addition, the inspection graded the PDU's reviewing of progress made by those on probation as inadequate. Probation reviews 'often failed to identify critical changes in circumstances' including new relationships or further offending. In response to the findings, a Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: 'The government inherited a criminal justice system in crisis, placing significant strain on the probation service. We are boosting probation funding by 45%, investing up to £700 million more by 2028, and we are planning to recruit another 1,300 probation officers by March next year. 'This will ensure offenders receive robust supervision and improve the work probation does to keep the public safe.' On a positive note, inspectors noted a 'clear commitment' to staff development and wellbeing within the PDU and improving workloads. The report also found that probation leaders improved accessibility for people living in rural communities through satellite offices and sharing office space. Plastic To Fuel Inventor Julian Brown Found Safe After Alarming Posts Go Viral

Source: Victor LOCHON / Getty Atlanta inventor Julian Brown was confirmed safe by his mother, Nia Brown. The scientist went viral earlier this month after claiming he was 'under attack' in a video referencing mysterious occurrences connected to his invention that turns plastic into fuel. Read more about this news inside. After weeks of concern following a cryptic video that alarmed his 1.7 million Instagram followers, 21-year-old inventor Brown is safe and sound in a nondisclosed location. His mom, Nia Brown, confirmed the news. 'I can confirm Julian is safe, but in the best interest of his security, I'm not able to provide any more information,' Nia told The Daily Mail. Julian is the creator of Plastoline, a breakthrough product he says can convert plastic into usable fuels like diesel and gasoline. He also founded Nature Jab and developed 'Microwave Pyrolysis,' a patent-pending technology that fuses microwave heating with traditional pyrolysis plant functionality. His innovation and eco-conscious mission earned him a $100,000 grant from Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian and a spot as a 776 Climate Fellow. The safety concerns stemmed from a video Julian posted on July 9, which included a chilling caption: 'Something is happening, keep me in your prayers please. SCREEN RECORD THIS. I don't know.' In the video, he also stated, 'There is some very, very odd stuff going on. I'm certainly under attack right now in many different ways.' He assured followers that he was continuing his work despite the threats. Adding to the mystery, Julian previously shared a video of a low-flying helicopter allegedly tracking him in a remote location. 'A SECRET Helicopter found circled me in the middle of NOWHERE… and it gets even scarier – Pray for me please,' he wrote on July 3. Atlanta Police later reported no open missing persons investigation under his name, further fueling speculation online. Julian's work and passion are rooted in solving the global plastic crisis. 'What motivated me was seeing the large plastic issue at hand throughout the world,' he told Forbes earlier this year. 'It made me so upset that even though we are told we are recycling, plastic is clearly ending up in the oceans and landfills.' As the Internet breathes a cautious sigh of relief, questions still linger about Julian's well-being and the alleged threats he alluded to. For now, his supporters are just grateful he's alive and still building. We will share updates as this story develops. Smash-and-grab crew target convenience store overnight in the Loop, police say

An investigation is underway after a burglary crew targeted a convenience store in the Loop early Thursday morning. It happened around 3:16 a.m. at the South Loop Market in the 200 block of West Van Buren Street. Chicago police said that three unknown people broke the front glass of the store of the business before removing merchandise from within, and leaving the scene in a silver sedan heading westbound on Van Buren. CBS News Chicago learned that it was the second time the store had been targeted in the last two months. The store was still boarded up from the last burglary. As of Thursday, no arrests were made.
