The government is taking various measures, including setting up the Digital Intelligence Platform , to curb cyber frauds, Union Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday.He also highlighted that international spoofed calls have come down by 97 per cent.The communications and home ministries have taken four to five major measures to deal with cyber crimes , he told the Lok Sabha.The Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) brings various stakeholders together.It has coopted 620 institutions, including 570 banks, police institutions of 36 states and investigating agencies, Scindia said during the Question Hour. Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) software is being used wherein the data about individuals doing fraud with banks are categorised into various categories. The details are provided to all the banks and the transaction of such individuals are blocked, he said.In his written reply, Scindia said the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) undertakes efforts to prevent misuse of telecom resources for cyber frauds."Based on cyber fraud cases reported on National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), DoT has disconnected 3.57 lakh mobile numbers of which highest number of mobile connections are from Rajasthan, Bihar and West Bengal."Further, DoT has developed an indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data analytic tool ASTR to identify suspected mobile connections taken by same person in different names. More than 82 lakhs such connections have been disconnected after failing reverification process," he said.DoT has also put in place a robust Know Your Customer (KYC) framework for issuing mobile connections to subscribers.Scindia said DoT has also amended existing KYC instructions and introduced business connections framework where KYC of each end-user is made mandatory before activation."In addition, a robust KYC process for SIM Swap/replacement has also been introduced," he added.Responding to a supplementary question, Scindia said state-owned BSNL and MTNL are back on the road to recovery.The minister mentioned about the review meeting of BSNL this week, and said a business plan will be prepared, especially for each business circle.

Call for use of modern technology in agriculture
Guntur: Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar urged the farmers to use modern technology in agriculture to reduce cost of cultivation. He participated as the chief guest in the 20th phase of the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi programme held at the Agricultural University in Guntur city on Saturday. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi officially launched this phase of the PM-KISAN scheme virtually from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. As part of this nationwide initiative, Union Ministers joined virtually from various states. In Andhra Pradesh, the programme was launched at the Agricultural University in Guntur by Dr Pemmasani Chandrasekhar. Speaking on the occasion, he said the cost of cultivation for paddy, chilli, Bengal gram and cotton crops ranges from Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000 per acre to extend helping hand to the famers, the Centre and state governments extending financial assistance of Rs 20,000 per year. He said, the farmers in several states are using services of Krishi Vignan Kendras,and added that the Acharya Ranga Agricultural University has been developed with state-of-the-art infrastructure. He said the use of bio-pesticides has increased, but due to adulterated products from some companies, cancer-causing risks are rising. He further said under the coalition government, effective water management for agriculture has been implemented under the leadership of CM Chandrababu Naidu and the availability of drones for agriculture has increased, and these can significantly improve productivity. MLA B Ramanjaneyulu, ANGRAU vice-Chancellor Dr R Sarada Jayalakshmi, university professors and staff were present.

Remove Ads Guwahati: In a historic step towards the revival of Assam's river-based trade and sustainable logistics, National Waterway-57 (River Kopili) was operationalised with the first-ever cargo trial run from the Govardhan Bridge in Chandrapur, Kamrup to Hatsingimari in South movement marks the resumption of intra-state waterborne freight transport in Assam after more than a decade. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal underlined this development as a 'watershed moment' for Inland Waterways Transport in Assam and the cargo vessel MV VV Giri, equipped with self-loading capacity, carried 300 metric tonnes of cement from M/s Star Cement along the 300-kilometre route on the Kopili River (NW 57) and Brahmaputra river (NW 2), with a voyage time of approximately 12 to 14 hours. With this development, more than 1168 kms of National Waterways in Assam has become operational, confirmed Sarbananda the development as a breakthrough in Assam's logistics transformation, Sonowal, said, 'This is a watershed moment for Assam. With the operationalisation of NW-57 on River Kopili, we are not only reviving a lost artery of trade within the state, but also taking a major step towards building an inland water transport system that is economical, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. For far too long, the rich inter web of riverine transportation remained neglected post independence. Today, with the resumption of cargo movement on four National Waterways of Assam — on Brahmaputra (NW 2), Barak (NW 16), Dhansiri (NW31) & Kopili (NW 57) — we have made 1168 kms of waterways operational, offering a reasonable, economic and effective alternative mode of transportation. This will not only decongest our roads but also bring economies of scale for our many riverine communities in Assam to prosper and secure opportunities.''Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the Government of India has placed a strong focus on revitalising our inland waterways to create multimodal logistics corridors. Assam is an important state in this regard as IWAI, the nodal agency of our ministry, is working on multiple projects to unlock value across our river ways. From Brahmaputra to Barak, from Dhansiri to now Kopili, this is only the beginning to power the growth of the region with empowered inland waterways. Today's trial run replaces roughly 23 truckloads of cement — that's the power and potential of inland water transport.'This is the first cargo trial movement on the 46 kms long NW-57 since 2014, making it a turning point in the revival of intra-state cargo through Assam's river systems. The operationalisation of this route is in line with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and PM Gati Shakti, which aim to establish sustainable, integrated, and efficient transport infrastructure across the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has been proactively working on unlocking the navigational potential of rivers across the Northeast — including the Brahmaputra (NW-2), Barak (NW-16), Dhansiri (NW-31) and now Kopili (NW-57).Sonowal further emphasised, 'The Kopili cargo movement is a symbol of the new Assam — connected, empowered, and aligned with India's growth story. We are determined to build on this success and scale up cargo and passenger movement across all our major rivers. Waterways are not just a mode of transport; they are the arteries of regional prosperity.'

KOCHI: Despite suffering from age-related difficulties, M K Sanoo was keen to continue writing. And he was working on a book on Ananda Theerthar, a prominent disciple of Sree Narayana Guru. 'I am handicapped by age. But I have some pending work. A book on Ananda Theerthar is in the works. Though he was born a Brahmin he fought against caste discrimination. The younger generations must know about his struggles. I am searching for a youngster with a taste in Malayalam literature to complete the work,' Sanoo said during an interaction with TNIE on June 24. The demise of his wife N Retnamma in 2023 came as a big shock for Sanoo. They were married for nearly 70 years. 'I feel lonely. She was the strength of my life,' he had said. Ratnamma was the daughter of V Madhavan, the former health minister of Travancore-Cochin state. But Sanoo insisted on avoiding extravagance. Union minister K N Katju, state ministers Panampilly Govinda Menon, A J John, and T M Varghese attended the wedding. 'We served the guests tea and idli,' Sanoo said in an interview to TNIE last year. 'I joined Maharaja's College in 1977. We had a galaxy of eminent professors including M Krishnan Nair, M K Sanu, and M Leelavathi. That was the golden age of Maharaja's. Though a liberal, Sanoo Master was not associated with the leftist movement at the time. But when the college decided to introduce a shift system he opposed it. When he contested the assembly election, former students and artists from across the state came to Kochi to campaign for him,' recounted publisher CICC Jayachandran.
