MILWAUKEE — After he returned to the Mets last winter, the only question was when Pete Alonso would move atop the franchise home run list.
On Saturday night, he grabbed a share of that spot.
Alonso launched a second-inning homer — No. 252 in his career — that tied him with Darryl Strawberry for first place in the franchise record book.
It went for naught in the Mets' 7-4 loss to the Brewers at American Family Field.
All along, Strawberry has been pulling for Alonso to break his record. He shared his excitement over the tie in a text to The Post last night.

'Congratulations Pete,' Strawberry texted. 'Let's go (blue heart and orange heart emoji).'
Alonso departed before speaking to reporters. According to a club spokesman, the slugging first baseman had a family matter to which he needed to attend.

The blast was Alonso's fourth in eight games — he hit three during the most recent Mets home stand. Alonso had tied and moved ahead of David Wright for second place on the club's all-time list with homers Nos. 242 and 243 on June 8 in Colorado.

On this night, he pounded a 1-2 pitch from Tobias Myers over the fence in left-center for his 26th homer of the season.
'I congratulated him there, as soon as he got back to the dugout,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'It's pretty special, but for him, it's about winning, and right now we're not doing that, but it's a pretty special moment for him.'

Mendoza was asked what Alonso means to the organization.
'He means a lot,' Mendoza said. 'We're talking about a mark that is not easy to get to, especially with the amount of great players that have put on this uniform, and for Pete to be able to tie it is something special for him and all of us, and we're proud of him.'
As frustrated as Francisco Lindor was at the sixth straight Mets loss, he said he was happy Alonso could grab a piece of franchise history.

'He's one of the best power hitters in this organization and one of the best in the game, as well,' Lindor said. 'What he does day in and day out is impressive, and I am super proud of him, and I am glad he's my teammate and I got to witness history.'
Lindor said the entire team was aware Alonso needed only one homer to tie Strawberry.
'It's something he doesn't talk about much, but I am sure he wanted it,' Lindor said. 'And for him to accomplish that, it's a good thing. I am sure he's going to hit one [Sunday] or the next game and be the sole leader of the franchise.'

Sign up Now WASHINGTON — Francisco Alvarez will attempt to postpone surgery on a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb, grip a bat while compromised and still be able to make throws while nursing that thumb. That Alvarez wants to try to return to the club in time for the stretch run and perhaps postseason is both admirable and somewhat difficult to envision. There are not many who know what awaits the Mets catcher. But there are a few. Advertisement 'It's doable,' reported Dustin Pedroia, who would know. 'The pain — it is what it is. It's going to suck.' The best-case scenario for Alvarez became the best-case scenario for Pedroia, who learned to live and play with the pain, ripped off an All-Star and Gold Glove season and then helped the Red Sox win a World Series championship.

Brewers fans line up to grab free burgers as part of local fast-food chain's promotion

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers' franchise-record 14-game winning streak resulted in one heck of a tab for a local fast-food chain. George Webb promises to give away free hamburgers whenever the Brewers reel off at least 12 straight victories. The local fast-food chain delivered on its promise Wednesday, as fans lined up outside each of its 26 Milwaukee-area locations Brian Meehan, a George Webb spokesman, said the chain expects to give out about 180,000 burgers as part of this promotion. George Webb officials purchased 25,000 pounds of beef, 4,000 pounds of onions, 300,000 pickle slices and 200,000 buns in preparation. 'It's something we think about when we get to like nine wins, and then as it gets closer,' Brewers fan Chris Crandall said as he enjoyed his burger Wednesday. That estimate of 180,000 included 100,000 vouchers George Webb gave out over the weekend enabling fans to pick up a free burger anytime from Aug. 25-29. But the company also was giving out free burgers to anyone who walked into a George Webb during a four-hour window Wednesday afternoon. By the time that giveaway started, about 125 fans already had lined up outside the closest George Webb to American Family Field. 'It's like a once-in-a-decade opportunity, so I'm taking advantage of it,' said Stephen Pawlak of Franklin, Wisconsin. Joe Hasler and Scott Antczak of Milwaukee grabbed some burgers for the road Wednesday as they prepared to drive to the Brewers' game with the Chicago Cubs that night. 'We've been going to George Webb for our whole lives,' Hasler said. 'It's always a great place after a good night of having beers and after a ballgame. It's a quality burger, part of the nostalgia of the Milwaukee Brewers.' Tony Pedretti of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, about a two-hour drive west of Milwaukee, had attended the second game of the Brewers' doubleheader loss in Chicago the previous night. He was aware of the giveaway and decided to stop for a free burger on his way home. 'I've never been to George Webb, so it's a good marketing, customer activation program,' said Pedretti, who wore a Brewers cowboy hat as he waited in line. The Brewers earned their 12th straight victory last week and then won again on Friday before the streak ended Sunday with a 3-2, 10-inning loss at Cincinnati. George Webb's burger giveaway promotion goes back several decades. During the years when the Braves played in Milwaukee before moving to Atlanta in 1966, George Webb promised free burgers if they won as many as 13 straight games. When Milwaukee welcomed the Brewers in 1970, George Webb changed the promotion and promised to give away free burgers for every 12-game win streak. This marks the third time George Webb's had to deliver on its promise. The Brewers won their first 13 games of the 1987 season. The Brewers won their final eight regular-season games and first four playoff games for a 12-game streak in 2018. The line outside the closest George Webb to American Family Field on Thursday included multiple people who said they also had capitalized on those 1987 and 2018 burger giveaways. Many of the fans arrived with hearty appetites. 'The guy in front of me literally had a map with all the George Webbs,' Crandall said. 'So he's definitely hitting more than one.' ___
