Big Issue publishes its list of top ‘changemakers'

Independent27-01-2025
The Big Issue has published a list of its so-called top 100 'changemakers', including an 11-year-old boy and Gavin and Stacey's Ruth Jones.
The aim of the annual list is to recognise and praise notable activists, agitators and grassroots figureheads making an impact on society, as nominated by readers of the magazine.
The list includes those who have raised millions for charity, supported people living in extreme poverty and fought for changes to the law.
It includes barrister Christian Weaver who represented the family of Awaab Ishak during the inquest that changed housing nationally and Ruth Jones, who as well as her role in Gavin & Stacey, championed children's hospice Ty Hafan, based in her alter ego Nessa's home of Barry Island.
Steven Frayne – the magician previously known as Dynamo – nominated 11-year-old Travis Robinson from his hometown of Bradford, who was inspired by an interaction with a local homeless man to sell his toys to fund the start-up of a new food bank.
Other Changemakers include Maya Amangeldiyeva, who continued to run a food bank in Herne Bay after an assault and attempted arson attack; Blue Spirit Sailing, which takes young people experiencing a mental health challenge in the North East sailing; Aneysha Minocha, the inventor striving to decarbonise buildings across the world; and refugee football team Fair Shot FC.
Paul McNamee, editor of the Big Issue, said: 'Against the backdrop of a madder, more divisive world, 2025's Big Issue changemakers stand out for their selfless pursuit of justice and kindness for others.

Big Issue editor Paul McNamee
He said: 'This year's list includes lawyers, inventors, entrepreneurs, footballers, sailors, singers, community leaders – from Changemakers who have changed UK law, to Changemakers who have changed things on their street corner.
'We are even celebrating our youngest ever Changemaker in 11-year-old marvel Travis, who fittingly hails from this year's UK City of Culture, Bradford.
'Our partner Citroen have generously donated an electric van that will enable one of our most impressive Changemakers – Matthew's House in Swansea – to make even more change in their community.'
The list is included in the latest edition of the Big Issue, which is on sale from Monday.

Rob Brydon says he 'doesn't get the respect' in rare career insight Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon has spoken frankly about his career in recent years, talking about the sorts of roles he'd hope he'd land compared with those he did Rob Brydon has commented on how he thinks he is viewed Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon has said that he sometimes doesn't get the respect other actors get due to his crossover between presenting and acting work. Speaking about his career just a few months after turning 60, Rob reflected on how fortunate he feels to still be getting roles in his sixth decade. He told the Telegraph: 'I'm very lucky, I'm 60 and people are still asking me to do things. I like doing lots of different things. ‌ 'The downside of that is you don't get the respect that somebody who focuses on one thing [gets], because one minute I'm hosting, the next I'm acting.' ‌ Rob's reflections on his career come ahead of filming about to commence on the next series of The Trip, one which sees him and Steve Coogan travel go on road trips in different countries, visiting restaurants along the way. Directed by Michael Winterbottom, the programme has developed an avid following over the years, and it was the director who was the one who convinced Rob to do a fifth series. Rob Brydon has often been described as a national treasure Article continues below When asked why he was doing another now, Rob replied: "Because Michael Winterbottom 'Let's do another one,'. We just turn up.' This isn't the first time Rob has touched on his career in recent years. Last year, he talked to the Guardian about the Gavin and Stacey finale and his relationship with other long-running cast members including Ruth Jones. However, he also touched on rumours that he had ambitions for serious roles such as Succession-type dramas. ‌ Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan In response, he said: 'I mean, who wouldn't want to have been in Succession? Watching it, I thought, my God, the wit of it. 'I'd love to be in something like this. But all actors would love to do something different to what they're known for, I think, which for me is a kind of warm-hearted naivety. Article continues below 'My problem is that I am not driven enough or hungry enough to make the effort. And, yes, maybe part of that is, oh, then I won't fail if I don't try.' While Rob may not have appeared in Succession, he will appear in the latest series of The Trip. Due to be six episodes long, it will see Rob and Steve, 59, explore Northern Europe. Speaking about the return of the series, Steve said: 'I'm delighted that Michael Winterbottom has managed to persuade me at the age of 59 to join Rob, aged 60, to squeeze the last few drops of comedy from a bottle that we both thought was pretty much empty.'

Gavin and Stacey's Best Moments With the news that the show is set to make an exciting return to screens, let's take a look at some of the comedy programme's biggest and best moments... Smithy and Rudi's American Boy rap - No one will ever forget when James Corden and Sheridan Smith rapped perfectly word for word the Kanye West and Estelle hit American Boy as they walked across the car park on the phone to Gavin. Pam's Vegetarian faux pas - Despite loving a cheesburger, Pam found herself caught up in a web of unexpected lies when she claimed to be Vegetarian. She is forced to keep up the secret throughout the entire show and uses hubby Mick to help her scoff meat. She is later rumbled when Stacey catches her in the act as she scoffs ham in the kitchen. Stacey says to her: 'Is that ham, Pam!?… 'I've seen you, Pam. A scotch egg here, a bit of bacon there, putting those regular sausages into the Linda McCartney box'. THAT fishing trip - It remains one of the biggest mysteries in Gavin and Stacey history as to just exactly what did happen on the ill-fated fishing trip. Bryn appears to be hiding a secret as to an occurance between him and his nephew Jason which has left relations fractures. Ness' on-off boyfriend, Dave, is the only other person to know the whole truth. Bryn did appear to allude to him and Jason lying together naked to keep warm as he said to Dave: 'We're going to have this out, once and for all, man to man, you may know what happened, David, but you don't know why it happened! It was freezing cold, it was! And when you are that cold…' Islands in the Stream - No one can ever forget the classic Karaoke performance of Islands in the Stream. Nessa and Bryn performed the track in front of all their nearest and dearest. It saw the whole pub burst into some line-dancing as they enjoyed a boozy night out. The Xmas special proposal - In 2019, fans were left overjoyed when the show made a comeback but it ended on the ultimate cliffhanger. Nessa asked Smithy if she would marry him as she finally laid bare her feelings for him. Fans were gutted as the show then cut straight to the credits as they never found out just how Smithy answered. Will all be revealed in the brand new episode?
