Tech promised better rest. So, why are we still wide awake?

We tracked everything: Calories, steps, resting heart rate, metabolism, breathing patterns, water intake. It all helped… until it didn't. Turns out, we need discipline, not data, to stay healthy. And here's tech again, coming for our sleep. The battle for eight hours of proper shut-eye has a leaderboard of its own. Smart rings are tracking REM cycles. There are AI-enabled mattresses and pillows that adjust themselves for perfect alignment. Spotify has playlists for white noise, whale sounds and music that gets more downtempo with every track, to lull you into stupor.
At that Japanese home-goods shop in the mall, everyone's putting their hands into the hole to test if the bedsheet fabric really lowers the temperature by one degree. Melatonin melts are big business. Health nerds on Insta are convinced that eating two kiwis before bed will put them to sleep. And yet, we're no closer to sleeping better than before. Could sleepmaxxing be the thing that's coming in the way of rest?
Gayathri Subramanian works at the cognitive neuroscience lab at Northwestern University, USA. She knows that sleep is more than a rest-and-reboot period for the body. 'It plays a crucial role in helping us learn new things, and it directly impacts memory consolidation and storage that acquire over the day,' she says. Subramanian is not surprised that there's so much interest in sleep now. We're sleeping later and less. And every tracking device is convinced that the problem can be managed with data. 'There's even a name for the phenomenon in which one is so obsessed with sleep data that it affects their rest: Orthosomnia,' she says.

Here's what sleep trackers won't tell you: Good rest isn't about the numbers. Even the eight-hour mandate is a myth, says Dr Ragavendar B, a Chennai-based consultant neurologist. For much of human history, we slept in two short spells over a 24-hour period, rather than one long one. It helped our ancestors migrate and fend off predators. We, meanwhile, aim for one eight-hour stretch, and we trust data more than how we feel in the morning. 'Sleep devices aren't change makers; they are awareness tools,' he says. They're problem finders, not problem solvers.
We're probably expecting too much benefit from too little sleep. 'The data that these devices collect is only 85% accurate,' says Subramanian. Besides, they only illustrate the what, not the why, of troubled sleep. 'There could be underlying reasons, such as obesity, psychiatric issues, or sleep apnoea,' says Dr. Ragavendar. Those aren't things that a ring, cooling bedsheet or a whale-sound playlist can address.
We'll probably make a bad sleep decision this weekend. We might stay awake longer, and hope to make up the resting time later. Don't push the deficit back by more than 48 hours, warns Dr. Ragavendar. 'It will increase stress hormones such as cortisol, which again leads to poor sleep quality, pushing you into a cycle.' The formula for good sleep is crushingly dull: Sleeping and waking at the same times, dimming the lights as bedtime approaches, putting the phone away, eating an hour before sleeping, getting warm and comfy. We knew that already.
It's why no device, hack or trend has been able to actually deliver better sleep. Rest isn't something to win at; it's something to surrender to. The real flex isn't a high score on the Oura ring or checking the pillow app in the morning. It's actually being enough of a loser to call it a day, over and over, so you wake up a winner.

WHEN LIP-BU TAN was summoned to the White House on Monday, he was ostensibly there to explain his investments in Chinese startups. After the meeting Donald Trump, who just a few days earlier had called for the boss of Intel to resign, was full of praise for his 'amazing story'. Mr Tan has kept his job. But he probably had not reckoned on gaining a co-CEO. Mr Trump is now reported to be considering an investment in the chipmaker on behalf of America's government. Intel, whose shares have jumped by 10% in response to the news of a potential bail-out, is in a funk. Mr Tan, who took over in March, has indicated that the company will not invest further in its advanced '14a' manufacturing process until it finds customers willing to pay it to make chips for them using the technology. Construction of its manufacturing plant in Ohio, where building began to star-spangled fanfare in 2022, has slowed to a crawl. Layoffs have been brutal. The firm has lost around half of its value since 2023 and its huge debt burden has been downgraded by rating agencies. Like his predecessor, Mr Trump thinks that Intel, America's only domestic manufacturer of advanced chips, is too important to fail. Joe Biden's administration approached the problem by showering the firm with subsidies: the company is the biggest beneficiary of the CHIPS Act. Mr Trump has vowed to cut back on such largesse. But any deal would do the opposite of untethering Intel from the state. Indeed, the president is reportedly even considering using funds from the CHIPS Act to finance an investment. That the government should meddle in business is now a matter of consensus among American politicians, though they disagree over what form this should take. Mr Trump's approach is becoming clear. He is not bureaucratic enough to be European, and he changes his mind too often to be Chinese. Instead, he behaves more like an activist investor straight off Wall Street, wringing out concessions after dressing down bosses in public. He cares a lot about share prices. Two recent investments indicate how this might work out for Intel. In June America's government took a 'golden share' in US Steel after the firm was bought by Nippon, a Japanese industrial outfit. Mr Biden had opposed the acquisition in the hope of winning union votes. He blocked the deal on spurious national-security grounds after a review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), America's inbound-investment watchdog. Mr Trump initiated another review and approved the deal. As part of a revised agreement the president gained the right to appoint a board member and a veto over lowering steel production in America. Intel, too, should expect that any deal will involve interacting directly with Mr Trump, rather than the federal bureaucracy. Control over manufacturing in Ohio may be one area of interest for the president. What Intel needs more than new board members is customers for its manufacturing, or 'foundry', arm. They have not been forthcoming, partly because Intel's chip-design business competes with would-be buyers such as AMD and Nvidia. A second transaction offers some clues as to how they might be persuaded. In July America's Defence Department invested $400m in MP Materials, a producer of rare-earth metals, and will guarantee the price it receives for its output at above-market rates. A few days later Apple, involved in its own negotiations with the president, also announced a supply agreement with MP Materials. Mr Trump may demand that chip designers such as AMD and Nvidia, which rely on his approval to sell their products in China, use Intel's manufacturing. A more radical option could see him force them to club together and purchase Intel's struggling foundry business. That's a deal any activist would be proud of pulling off.

In an interview with Business Insider , Malhar Shah, a US-based tech professional, revealed how he accomplished this feat. The techie, seeking senior engineering positions at a time when opportunities were scarce and competition was fierce. With applicant tracking systems (ATS) discarding the majority of résumés before recruiters ever saw them, Shah understood that he needed an edge to stand out from hundreds of other applicants. To gain that advantage, he turned to two of today's most advanced AI assistants—ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. He developed four distinct, customised résumés, each designed for specific roles he was pursuing: technical lead, staff engineer, engineering manager, and principal engineer. Every version went through several iterations, with ChatGPT and Gemini providing feedback. Interestingly, the evaluations were not always consistent. On one occasion, ChatGPT scored a résumé nine out of ten, while Gemini rated the same draft only seven. At times, even the same platform would assign different scores based on how the prompt was framed. Instead, the platforms acted like an additional reviewer, offering suggestions on language, structure, and emphasis. Feedback helped him refine phrasing, highlight leadership achievements, and integrate keywords that ensured ATS systems did not overlook his application. The tools also assisted him in reformatting sections and sharpening the narrative of his professional journey. Rather than chasing a mythical 'perfect résumé,' Shah prioritized accuracy and authenticity, shaping existing material with greater clarity. Balancing Technology With Human Wisdom Although AI proved critical to his process, Shah credits human advice for keeping him grounded. A former colleague advised him not to let job hunting dominate his life. Following that counsel, Shah limited his application efforts to no more than two hours each day, dedicating additional time to continuous learning and family life. This balance, he told Business Insider, helped him remain productive and avoid exhaustion during the lengthy search. Beyond Résumés: Expanding AI's Role Shah also extended his use of AI into other aspects of the hiring process. He asked the tools to help him draft more persuasive cover letters and to simulate mock interviews. Both behavioral and technical interview sessions were rehearsed with AI, allowing him to polish his delivery and anticipate questions. The rapid cycles of practice and instant feedback gave him an edge that traditional preparation methods rarely provide.

Accenture said on Thursday it will buy Australian cybersecurity firm CyberCX in its largest-ever deal in the sector, with the Australian Financial Review valuing the transaction at more than A$1 billion ($650 million). A wave of devastating cyberattacks has battered Australia, including a 2022 breach at telecom major Optus that exposed the personal data of up to 10 million users, and a hack on health insurer Medibank affecting nearly 10 million customers. In July, Qantas Airways disclosed that criminals had infiltrated one of its call centres, accessing personal information of six million customers. Private equity firm BGH Capital, which is selling CyberCX, has not disclosed any financial terms. Accenture declined to provide additional details, while BGH Capital didn't respond to Reuters' requests for comment on the reported valuation. The deal underscores the surging demand for advanced digital security services as businesses worldwide face increasingly sophisticated cyber threats that disrupt operations and compromise sensitive data. Melbourne-based CyberCX was formed in 2019 through the merger of 12 smaller cybersecurity firms backed by BGH Capital. The company now employs about 1,400 people and runs security operations centres across Australia and New Zealand, with offices in London and New York. CyberCX is led by John Paitaridis, formerly managing director of Optus Business, and Chief Strategy Officer Alastair MacGibbon, Australia's former national cybersecurity coordinator. The leadership's ties to Optus are notable, given the telecommunications company's 2022 data breach, which exposed names, birth dates, addresses, phone numbers, email contacts and passport and driver's license numbers. Since 2015, Accenture has completed 20 security acquisitions, including recent purchases of Brazilian cyber defense firm Morphus, MNEMO Mexico and Spain-based Innotec Security. On the domestic front, the firm entered into a $700 million collaborative agreement with Telstra in February, aiming to implement AI capabilities across the telecommunications company.
