MBTA to offer late-night weekend service on subways, certain bus routes in Boston area
The MBTA will soon be adding late-night weekend service to subway lines, as well as popular bus routes in the Boston area. Starting Aug. 24, service will be extended by about an hour on all subway lines, as well as eight frequent bus routes, on Friday and Saturday nights. Some bus routes will have later service seven nights a week, and certain ferries will also run later, the T said. "We have been able to get to the point where we've improved our system, we've built up the workforce, where we can now strategically add extended service on our subway system," MBTA General Manager Phil Eng told the agency's Board of Directors on Tuesday. Right now, subway trains make their final stops between midnight and 1 a.m. on the weekends. Eng said extending service at night will help businesses and people who work late. The MBTA is also going fare-free after 9 p.m. for five consecutive Friday and Saturday nights, starting Sept. 5 through Oct. 4. "We're doing this within our operational budget," Eng said. "It is super exciting." The Red, Orange, Blue, Green and Mattapan Lines will all see nearly an hour of extended service on Friday and Saturday nights. Bus routes 1, 22, 39, 66, 110, SL1, SL3 and SL5 will also run about an hour later on Friday and Saturday nights. The busy Route 23, 28, 57, 111 and 116 bus lines will have an extra hour of service every night of the week, the MBTA said. On the water, the Hingham/Hull ferries will run an hour later on Friday evenings. Service is being extended to 10 p.m. on the Charlestown and East Boston ferries on Friday and Saturday evenings.

MBTA to extend subway service by about an hour on Friday and Saturday nights
'We know that there are so many people that rely on mass transportation beyond our normal service hours that we felt like this was a good opportunity to offer that to our riders,' MBTA general manager Phillip Eng told the Globe. Advertisement Here's how the T plans to change service this fall, according to the agency: Subway service : Service on the Red, Green, Blue, and Orange lines will extend about an hour on Friday and Saturday nights. Trains will run in 30-minute intervals during the extended service window on the Ashmont and Braintree branches of the Red Line and on all the Green Line branches. Trains will run in 15-minute intervals on the Orange Line, the Blue Line, and between JFK/UMass and Alewife on the Red Line. Bus service : Service on the 1, 22, 39, 66, 110, SL1, SL3, and SL5 lines will extend about an hour on Friday and Saturday nights. Service on the 23, 28, 57, 111, and 116 lines — 'five of the MBTA's most frequent bus routes with the highest number of later riders,' according to the agency — will extend about an hour every day of the week. The buses on all the aforementioned routes will travel in 30-minute intervals during the extended service period. Ferry service : The Hingham/Hull Ferry will add an additional roundtrip on Friday nights, departing Hingham for Long Wharf at 10:15 p.m. and departing Long Wharf to Hull and Hingham at 11 p.m. — about an hour later than current schedules. MBTA announces new, largest ferry ‘Millennium'
'The service sells itself,' Coholan said. The MBTA saw success with the launch of the Lynn ferry in 2023, and last year bought two smaller boats due to the increased popularity, Eng said. The Advertisement 'This big addition is going to allow us to really handle some of the larger ridership routes because we know right now, the popularity has overgrown our capacity,' Eng said. Riders can expect a peaceful and enjoyable ride aboard the Millennium, which is equipped with a full beverage and snack service, accessible restrooms, and is ADA compliant, officials said. Although the Millennium does not have an official opening date, Eng said it's expected to be in service 'this season.' For its maiden voyage into Boston Thursday, the ferry left Somerset, where it was docked, just before 11 a.m. and traveled through Vineyard Sound and Cape Cod Canal before sailing past Long Wharf. Built in 1998, the Millennium is in pristine condition, Coholan said. Advertisement Its sister boats, Aurora and Asteria, feature the same design, meaning crews will be familiar with its operations and maintenance. The Millennium will be serviced and inspected at the Charlestown yard before its opening day. Boston Harbor Cruises assisted with closing the deal, and an all-female crew was aboard the Millennium during its debut, Eng said. 'We serve a diverse population, and we want to make sure the MBTA crews, including those that are supporting us, are just as diverse as the people we serve,' Eng said. Water transportation is becoming a more appealing option to riders, and Eng sees this market continuing to grow in the future. Eng thanked the governor's administration for focusing on mass transportation. Ten million dollars of state funds aided the purchase of the Millennium. 'Water transportation is exciting,' Eng said.
