AIMPLB Temporarily Suspends Waqf Protests Due To Pahalgam Terror Attack

The AIMPLB has issued a condolence statement and decided to temporarily pause its ongoing protest programmes.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Wednesday condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and decided to pause its ongoing protests against the new Waqf law for three days in solidarity with the families of victims.
The terror attack at a prime tourist location in Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Tuesday left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead and several injured.
The AIMPLB has issued a condolence statement and decided to temporarily pause its ongoing protest programmes, a statement issued by the Muslim organisation said.
As a mark of solidarity with the bereaved families, the Board has suspended its campaign against the 'controversial amendments" to the Waqf Act for three days starting April 23, the statement said.
SQR Ilyas, national convener of the Majlis-e-Amal for the protection of Waqf under the AIMPLB, said in a statement that the terrorist attack in Pahalgam is deeply tragic and strongly condemnable.
Therefore, the Board has decided to suspend its protest programmes under the Waqf Protection Campaign for three days as an expression of mourning and sympathy for the victims' families.
Ilyas issued a circular to the campaign's state and district conveners, instructing them to immediately pause all campaign activities for the three days.
However, he clarified that the campaign will resume after this period.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Left government in Kerala on Wednesday said it is open to discussion if any group faces difficulties following the announcement of new school timings for high schools in the state. The move comes after Muslim scholar and president of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, expressed concern that the revised schedule would affect madrassa education for around 12 lakh students. Thangal raised the issue at a function attended by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan . Samastha Kerala Jamiyyatthul ul-Ulama, known as Samastha, is an association of eminent Sunni scholars who enjoy the highest support base among Kerala Muslims. General Education Minister V Sivankutty, responding to the concerns, said the government is ready to listen and consider changes if needed. The revised timings, announced earlier in the day, extend the school day by 15 minutes in both the morning and evening sessions, except on Fridays. Under the new schedule, high school classes will run from 9.15 am to 4.15 pm. Talking to a news channel, Sivankutty said the government is under no compulsion on this matter. He said this was not framed by the Education Department on the basis of a government decision, but follows a court directive and a commission's decision. "Still, if any section faces difficulties due to the new timings, the government will hold discussions with them and put in place a system that does not cause difficulties to anyone," Sivankutty said. Taxes on beer already very high compared to IMFL whisky in Maharashtra: Brewers Association
New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) Defending the Maharashtra government's recent decision to increase excise duty on IMFL whisky and not on beer, the brewers' body BAI said taxes on beer are already very high in the state compared to other markets. The Brewers Association of India (BAI) has welcomed the new tax regime in Maharashtra, saying it will help to generate more tax revenues for the state government. Moreover, tax reforms were undertaken for beer in 2018-19, and it was long overdue for spirits, said BAI, a body of the top three beer companies - UBL, Brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), which owns brands as Budweiser, Hoegaarden and Corona along with Carlsberg which operates here with Carlsberg and Tuborg brands, together accounting for around 85 per cent of sales in India. "The taxes on beer are already very high in the state. In the last 10-odd years, excise duty on beer has gone up by 32 per cent compared to just 9 per cent on IMFL, leading to a strange situation where a bottle of beer is priced up to 50 per cent more than the competing nips of IMFL," BAI said in a statement. On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government decided to increase the excise duty on IMFL and country liquor. Now IMFL will be subject to an excise duty that is 4.5 times the manufacturing cost, up from the current rate of three times. However, the state government has not decided to increase excise duty on beer, which is criticised by several alcohol beverage players. "We understand that the (state) government intends to increase the tax revenues from alcohol, and if that is the compelling reason, then this is perhaps the best course of action," BAI Director General Vinod Giri said. "While tax on beer was revised upwards in 2018-19, tax reforms for other categories, most notably, IMFL (Indian-made foreign liquor) and CL (country liquor), had been pending for over a decade now which may have compelled the government to undertake this long overdue tax reform now," he added Giri said: "It is not surprising then that the beer industry has remained flat in the state over the last decade, whereas sectors like IMFL have galloped at an average compounded growth rate of 7 per cent year after year for 10 years." According to him, this move will help correct the relative pricing between liquor and beer and bring growth back in the beer sector. Further, BAI said brewers have already invested ₹ 3,500 crore in breweries in Maharashtra and are providing jobs to 3,500 people. "We are committed to making fresh investments if a conducive regulatory environment is created for beer," Giri said. The Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies, which represents the domestic industry and IMFL players, is yet to issue a statement over the development in Maharashtra. According to industry sources, CIABC and other players are sending a representation to the state government, putting their case forward.

Pak Delegation to Visit US For Trade Talks Munir's visit to the US is likely to coincide with the tour of a senior trade delegation from Pakistan to Washington this week for talks with US officials on the recently imposed American tariffs and related economic issues. The three-day visit will be the latest in a series of high-level exchanges between Islamabad and Washington amid a fragile regional security climate following last month's military conflict with India, according to a report by Dawn. The delegation will be led by Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul and includes senior Federal Board of Revenue officials and representatives of the energy and information technology sectors. They will hold meetings with their US counterparts at the Office of the United States Trade Representative, focusing on trade imbalances, tariff adjustments, and sectoral cooperation, the Dawn report said.
