Manchester United are closing in on the appointment of a new academy director, with Stephen Torpey set to make the move to Old Trafford from Premier League rivals Brentford Manchester United are set to appoint a new academy chief after Nick Cox left to become technical director at Everton. Cox spent nine years as United's director of academy and his departure was confirmed in June. At the time, United hailed Cox for creating a "unique culture of excellence" within the academy setup and for leaving it in "excellent shape to continue attracting and developing world-class talent, and well-rounded young people". And according to a new report from the Manchester Evening News, United are now closing in on his replacement. The report states that Brentford's academy director Stephen Torpey is on the verge of joining the club. Torpey joined Brentford in January 2024, having previously spent time as Manchester City's head of academy coaching and a lead foundation coach at Liverpool. During his time at City, Torpey was credited with helping develop the likes of Cole Palmer, Rico Lewis and James McAtee. He also worked closely with Jason Wilcox, who was City's academy director and is now United's director of football. In an interview with the Times earlier this year, Torpey explained his philosophy. "We invite parents in to speak with our under-18s," he said. "There's a young player who's on the brink of becoming a professional, but he's still a minor. "We ask them and say, 'How do you want this to go? Do you want Mum and Dad to be present as you're about to enter into the B team, or would you like to start to take this upon yourself? Because at some point you might have to have a conversation with Thomas Frank and I don't think you could invite Mum and Dad. You're at work.' "It's about being realistic, but also picking the right moment for the right individual as well and not making it, 'You are now 16 — no more parents', because there might be someone who's quite timid. There also might be someone who's very mature and ready for that. "When you see players walk out for the first-team and you've worked with them from the very earliest ages, they feel like one of your own. There's no better feeling for a fan than to watch one of your own. "I think that's the challenge here: to try and create that same special feeling for our fans when they see one of our local players run out at the Gtech and play in the Premier League and represent the club that they love."

We're letting ourselves get carried away, but if that means we finally get to enjoy a career mode in which there are consequences for poor results, we're in. Project Motor Racing is the brainchild of several Slightly Mad Studios and SimBin alumni who have a long list of brilliant racing sims to their name. It's running on a bespoke game engine to ensure maximum realism, and promises full modding support. We can't wait. David Artell: Grimsby win at Walsall ‘probably our worst performance' of season
Evan Khouri's 68th-minute rebound – after Aden Flint had cleared Jaze Kabia's effort off the line – was enough to fire the unbeaten Mariners to victory at the Bescot and up to second in the table after a fast-paced clash in which both goalkeepers excelled. Kabia clipped the woodwork via a vital touch from Walsall stopper Myles Roberts in the first half. But Grimsby custodian Christy Pym was the busier on the night, denying Jamie Jellis at point-blank range and seeing defender Dan Cox's 20-yard swing hit the top of the crossbar on its way over, 11 minutes before the decisive goal. Walsall had their moments after that, including a series of scrambles and a disallowed goal, but vital blocks always seemed to come from somewhere as Grimsby earned more than warranted the spoils. 'It was a quick game, not the best we have seen this season and probably our worst performance, certainly in possession,' said Artell. 'But the out-of-possession stuff was outstanding, the tracking of runners and stopping crosses. 'Walsall have good runners from the eight positions, two willing runners up top who are a handful and we stood up to a hell of a lot of that really, really well. 'When called upon, Christy did ever so well. It was a proper away performance that matched the result. 'It wasn't vintage us but it shows that if you get a strong physical team – and that's not detrimental to Walsall who are very good at what they do – then that's another box ticked. 'If someone wants to try to beat us up or shell it on us, good luck. We will get games like that in League Two, you have to be good at that and we were.' Pym shovelled out a low centre before reacting to deny Charlie Lakin 26 minutes in, while Khouri cleared the crossbar from 20 yards with Roberts out of his goal at the other end. Pym thwarted Jellis and Roberts matched his heroics a minute later, deflecting Kabia's rising drive enough to graze the woodwork, while Jellis ballooned over Connor Barrett's square pass in first-half stoppage-time. Dan Cox brushed the crossbar and Lakin cleared it for Walsall prior to the goal, with Albert Adomah denied a leveller from a goalmouth scramble by an offside flag that frustrated home boss Mat Sadler. 'I thought (a point) was the least we deserved,' he said. 'From the video footage we've got, it was onside so it's frustrating when it doesn't go your way. From the linesman's point of view, Coxy is that side of him and he probably didn't see the guy on the other side. 'It didn't create that grandstand that the supporters deserved but we kept going. We emptied the tank and that's all you can really ask.'
