David Artell: Grimsby win at Walsall ‘probably our worst performance' of season

Leader Livea day ago
Evan Khouri's 68th-minute rebound – after Aden Flint had cleared Jaze Kabia's effort off the line – was enough to fire the unbeaten Mariners to victory at the Bescot and up to second in the table after a fast-paced clash in which both goalkeepers excelled.
Kabia clipped the woodwork via a vital touch from Walsall stopper Myles Roberts in the first half.
But Grimsby custodian Christy Pym was the busier on the night, denying Jamie Jellis at point-blank range and seeing defender Dan Cox's 20-yard swing hit the top of the crossbar on its way over, 11 minutes before the decisive goal.
Walsall had their moments after that, including a series of scrambles and a disallowed goal, but vital blocks always seemed to come from somewhere as Grimsby earned more than warranted the spoils.
'It was a quick game, not the best we have seen this season and probably our worst performance, certainly in possession,' said Artell.
'But the out-of-possession stuff was outstanding, the tracking of runners and stopping crosses.
'Walsall have good runners from the eight positions, two willing runners up top who are a handful and we stood up to a hell of a lot of that really, really well.
'When called upon, Christy did ever so well. It was a proper away performance that matched the result.
'It wasn't vintage us but it shows that if you get a strong physical team – and that's not detrimental to Walsall who are very good at what they do – then that's another box ticked.
'If someone wants to try to beat us up or shell it on us, good luck. We will get games like that in League Two, you have to be good at that and we were.'
Pym shovelled out a low centre before reacting to deny Charlie Lakin 26 minutes in, while Khouri cleared the crossbar from 20 yards with Roberts out of his goal at the other end.
Pym thwarted Jellis and Roberts matched his heroics a minute later, deflecting Kabia's rising drive enough to graze the woodwork, while Jellis ballooned over Connor Barrett's square pass in first-half stoppage-time.
Dan Cox brushed the crossbar and Lakin cleared it for Walsall prior to the goal, with Albert Adomah denied a leveller from a goalmouth scramble by an offside flag that frustrated home boss Mat Sadler.
'I thought (a point) was the least we deserved,' he said.
'From the video footage we've got, it was onside so it's frustrating when it doesn't go your way. From the linesman's point of view, Coxy is that side of him and he probably didn't see the guy on the other side.
'It didn't create that grandstand that the supporters deserved but we kept going. We emptied the tank and that's all you can really ask.'

Can Exiles claim statement victory?

Newport County face one of League Two's sternest tests as they look to bounce back after successive fourth-tier defeats this Exiles were left licking their wounds after their 1-0 home loss to Salford City on Tuesday, which came on the back of last weekend's 2-1 defeat at Grimsby David Hughes felt his side did not do much wrong in the Salford reverse – but a step up in performance level is likely to be required when MK Dons come to Rodney Parade this Dons finished a lowly 19th in League Two last season, only three places above Newport, but big things are expected of Paul Warne's team this Rotherham and Derby boss Warne (above) is a serial promotion winner, and he has been backed in the transfer market this summer with the likes of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Callum Patterson and Aaron Collins moving to Stadium begun 2025-26 as favourites to go up, Warne's men are fifth in the early-season table after winning two and drawing two of their four league games so are without a victory in eight home games in all competitions, a run which stretches back to would be quite a statement should Hughes' side end that sequence against the heavyweight opponents who come next.

Paterson admits pressure was on Notts to deliver

Notts County boss Martin Paterson admitted his side were under pressure to perform before recording their first win of the season in Wednesday's 4-1 victory against Shrewsbury Magpies had gone into the match with just one point from a possible nine in League Two so far but were comfortably the better side at Meadow Lane, playing confident, one-touch football."[I'm] happy because, I'll be honest with you, there was pressure going into that game and rightly so because of what's gone on in the first three games," Paterson, who took over from the sacked Stuart Maynard in June, told BBC Radio Nottingham."It's not all been dour but certainly we needed to put a full 90-minute performance together and I thought we did that."Goals from Matthew Dennis, Sonny Aljofree, Nick Tsaroulla and Conor Grant saw County cruise to victory against an out-of-form Shrewsbury side who have now lost every match since their draw against Bromley on the opening day of the season."There's still a few things inside it that we can't get carried away with - we've had people do that against us and I don't agree with it – the important thing is we pay respect to the opponents," Paterson added."Tonight was the first performance that looked like Notts County."With that, there were still moments in the second half when I thought they were doing it on purpose, the lads, trying to wind me up with some of their decisions but that's growth."So, positive night, four good goals, but I still want that clean sheet. That's really important, that shouldn't be swept under the carpet and it won't be with the back unit."County continue their League Two campaign with a home fixture against Bromley on Saturday [15:00 BST].

Wrexham AFC boss on back-to-back defeats in Championship

The Reds have kicked-off the Championship campaign with back-to-back defeats, with a 2-1 opening day loss at Southampton followed by Saturday's 3-2 home reverse against West Brom. Despite the success enjoyed over the last few seasons, Parkinson insists there were lows along the way before he, his staff and players turned things around. Now in the second tier for the first time in 43 years, Wrexham are back in action against crisis club Sheffield Wednesday at The Racecourse on Saturday and he won't shy away from the task of getting the Reds back on track. "We've had moments in all the divisions and had setbacks along the way," said the Reds' boss. "People think the three promotions we have had, we have had praise and plaudits all the time but we have had setbacks, and you come through those periods. "I think my second year in the National League, we didn't start great. "I remember getting beat at Chesterfield on a Tuesday night after drawing at Yeovil. "The start of the League Two season, we conceded five at home to MK Dons and then five against Swindon. "I remember similar meetings then. We had to find the solutions and that's what myself and the staff are good at. "It is finding solutions with the players as well. It's a collective thing, it's not just about us. "I always say that when I've been a player or a manager in a promotion season, you can sometimes look at it through rose-coloured glasses but when we review the season, you think 'we had a period there where we we lost our way and we had to find our way again'. "Now we're doing that with a new group of players but I'm pleased with the attitude of the lads. It is great and we'll work as a collective and look forward to the weekend."
