And the ever-devoted Neville looked just as miserable from his director's box.
A photographer inside Moor Lane snapped a stern Neville watching the game through a window on Saturday afternoon.
The Man Utd legend looked downtrodden as he rested his hand on the glass with his eyes fixed on the action.
With his hand spread out, Neville had five fingers pressed against the window - and this prompted a bit of fan from Crewe's social media admin.

Kadeem Harris scored at both ends of the field to make it 1-1 inside 16 minutes.
But Conor Thomas' quickfire double at the end of the first half was enough to secure the win.

This season was meant to mark new beginnings for Salford after Neville and England icon David Beckham completed their takeover in May.
Neville clubbed together with other members of Manchester United's famous Class of 92 to buy stakes in the club in 2014.
Gary Neville reveals fear with Liverpool to become most successful English team ever
Salford enjoyed four promotions in five years once the ex-United stars initially bought in.
Beckham then joined the ownership team in 2019 when he purchased a ten per cent stake from majority shareholder Peter Lim, who left in 2024.
But now Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes have also relinquished their ownership.
Butt, 50, was also inadvertently snapped sitting in front of Neville this weekend.
The new group also includes four further businessmen plus an Indian sports technology company.
According to The Athletic, they have invested between £11million and £15m to bolster Salford's infrastructure and sporting ambitions.
The 2024-25 season was their sixth consecutive campaign in League Two.
The Ammies finished eighth, missing out on a play-off spot by just one point.
But Neville's dreams of chasing Wrexham up the footie pyramid hit a stumbling block after Crewe's latest win.

Hibs transfer news: Done deal as Scotland regular signs on
Former Newcastle, Norwich, Blackburn and Birmingham defender lands at Easter Road Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! And Easter Road boss David Gray has cited the veteran free agent's versatility and leadership skills as vital additions to the squad. Former Newcastle, Norwich, Blackburn and Birmingham centre-half Hanley, now 33 and with 62 senior caps to his name, has been exploring options to remain down south – where he's played his entire senior career – or move to Europe. But Hibs have persuaded the Dumfries-born defender to return to his home nation for a career swansong. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Gray said: 'It's great to be able to bring Grant to the club. He's performed at a top-level throughout his career and has a real desire to compete at the highest level in his home nation. 'He's a strong, robust defender that can play in any role across our back three. He's a real leader both on and off the pitch and a player of his experience will add a lot to the team. I look forward to working with him.' Midtjylland game attendance was a sign of intent With Lewis Miller's £1.5 million move to Blackburn done yesterday, Hibs were in the market for a player capable of playing in the back three. They'd been working hard to win over Hanley, with former Scotland team-mate David Marshall – now right-hand man to sporting director Malky Mackay – accompanying the stopper to last week's dramatic Europa League clash with Midtjylland, which saw Hibs set a new record for home attendance in the modern Easter Road era. Mackay admitted: 'We've been keen to add another defender to the first feam squad, and we did everything in our power to make sure that we could bring in someone of Grant Hanley's calibre. He had a number of different options, but we're delighted he saw Hibs as the right club for him. I look forward to seeing him in Hibs green and white.' In a statement confirming the deal just released, Hibs revealed: 'We are delighted to announce the permanent signing of Scotland international Grant Hanley! The centre-back has put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal, which will run until the summer of 2027. 'Hanley departed Birmingham City at the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign after helping the Club win the League One title and return to the second-tier of English football. That promotion was the fourth of Hanley's career, playing significant roles for Norwich City and Newcastle United as they returned to the English Premier League. 'During his career, the 33-year-old has made 432 senior career appearances with the majority of those coming in the English Premier League and Championship. Hanley has also made important contributions for Scotland on the international stage, earning 62 caps to date and is a regular under Steve Clarke.'

Hibs head coach David Gray hailed the leadership and defensive qualities of Grant Hanley after the Easter Road club secured a deal for the Scotland internationalist. Hanley, 33, has been a free agent since his Birmingham City contract expired earlier this summer and the 62-times capped centre-half has penned a two-year contract with Hibs. However, after he moved to the English Championship club for a transfer in the region of £1 million, Hibs have moved swiftly to reinforce. Grant Hanley has signed a two-year deal with Hibs. | SNS Group Despite amassing a large number of caps for Scotland, Hanley has never played north of the border. Born in Dumfries, he started his professional career at Blackburn Rovers before moving to Newcastle United. He then joined Norwich City, where he captained the Canaries to promotion to the Premier League, before leaving Carrow Road in January in search of first-team football. Hanley remains an integral part of manager Steve Clarke's squad and knows that he needs to play regular first-team football to be in with a shout of playing in World Cup qualifiers, which start next month away at Denmark and Belarus. 'It's great to be able to bring Grant to the club,' said Gray. 'He's performed at a top-level throughout his career and has a real desire to compete at the highest level in his home nation. Palmer considering Deauville or Newmarket for Fitzella
The daughter of Too Darn Hot broke her maiden at Haydock and was not disgraced in the Albany Stakes at the Royal meeting when fourth behind Karl Burke's smart Venetian Sun. But she came out on top on her return to the Berkshire circuit when beating Staya by a length and Palmer is now plotting where to send her next before a trip to the Breeders' Cup. The Malpas-based handler said: 'We were very pleased with that. She seems to have come out of it in very good order. 'She's already had four starts. It's a question of how many more times do we want to run her this season. She's kind of grown and changed all year and I think she is a filly with a future, I don't think she is just a two-year-old. 'In my mind there will probably be no more than two more goes this year. She is potentially a filly for the Breeders' Cup, so that possibly means just one more European run. We want to do everything we can to make sure that's a winning European run before we go to California. 'In my head I thought maybe the Prix du Calvados (at Deauville on August 24), which is where Simmering went last year after winning the Princess Margaret and I thought that looked quite a nice fit. 'Predicting and reading the ground in France is tricky and she does want top of the ground, but it's very hot in August in Deauville and it dries out very quickly being by the beach and by the river and we'll just have to be on weather watch. 'If that didn't work I thought probably the Rockfel (at Newmarket on September 26) would be an obvious target, it'll be another month later but the Cambridgeshire meeting tends to throw up quite quick ground, still being relatively early. 'She is in the Moyglare as well. But the Moyglare being that jump to Group One company might be the hardest way to keep her unbeaten, to make sure her next run is a winning one. 'Any Group winning two-year-old from this point of the season onwards, you're thinking about the Guineas. There's a lot of water to throw under the bridge between now and then but that's what we'd like her to be.'
