Terrain drives Forsyth Fire to grow another 775 acres, surpassing 15,000 acres burned

PINE VALLEY, Utah () — The Forsyth Fire that is burning near Pine Valley in Washington County grew another 775 acres as firefighters continue to struggle with difficult terrain in the area.
The spread occurred on the southern edge of the fire, where crews are focusing aircraft and ground efforts. Smoke also increased over the last 24 hours as winds pushed the fire into unburned fuel. As hot and dry weather is expected to continue into the weekend, fire officials are expecting fire behavior to continue to increase.
The lightning-caused fire sparked on June 19 and has since burned 15,363 acres. Despite the over 770-acre growth, firefighters still hold 58% containment on the flames. The United States Forest Service reports that 589 fire personnel are on scene battling the fire.

A Stage 1 fire restriction remains in place for Washington, Iron and surrounding counties. A forest closure order has also been issued for the Pine Valley Ranger District.
The Pine Valley, Grass Valley, and Gray's Ranch communities remain in a 'ready' status for evacuation, meaning residents should begin preparations for evacuations, should one be issued. The U.S. Forest Service notes that Pinto is no longer under any evacuation status.

Vegetation fire destroys structures, kills livestock in rural Tracy

A vegetation fire driven by high winds tore through multiple structures and killed livestock Thursday evening in rural south Tracy, officials said. The blaze was reported around 7:15 p.m. in the 31000 block of South Tracy Boulevard, the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority said. The fire authority said Tracy firefighters arrived to find flames spreading from dry vegetation into numerous outbuildings, including barns, stables, sheds, and livestock enclosures. Crews' initial attack was hampered by livestock blocking entrances and roadways, delaying access to the flames. Officials said the property housed horses, cows, goats, and other animals. Some animals died in the fire, but it's not yet clear how many. About 40 firefighters and 12 engines from multiple agencies responded to assist with the firefight, the fire authority said. One home on the property sustained minor burn damage. A vehicle was also damaged. No people were injured. The fire has since been contained and crews were mopping up hot spots. The cause remains under investigation.

Oak Creek-area residents told to prep for evacuations if Woods Fire advances

Residents who live east of State Highway 179 in the Village of Oak Creek should be prepared to evacuate if the Woods Fire grows, officials with the Coconino National Forest said. However, retardant that was dropped on the fire on Aug. 13 appeared to box in the flames, which were burning about 2 miles east of the highway, according to the Sedona Fire Department. As of 4:30 p.m. Aug. 14, it was unclear if that tactic had reduced the fire's footprint. The Woods Fire started on Aug. 13, although its origin was unknown. It had scorched 55 acres as of Aug. 14, the Sedona Fire Department said. Light smoke was expected to be visible in the area which could cause hazy conditions in the Village of Oak Creek as smoke drained into Verde Valley, the Fire Department said. The tourist mecca of Sedona is north of the Village of Oak Creek and has not been threatened by the fire. Reach the reporter at or at 602-228-7566 and follow her on social media@maryjpitzl. . Parts of England to hit 30C as fire crews travel across country to battle blaze

Parts of England will swelter through temperatures of up to 30C on Friday as firefighters grapple with a lack of resources amid the heatwave. The Met Office forecast patchy cloud across the north with some light rain and the odd shower in Scotland. Despite this, temperatures will remain warm, particularly across England and Wales. In London, highs of 30C are predicted, while Cardiff will only be slightly cooler at 29C. Further north, Belfast and Edinburgh are expected to be a little milder, with temperatures reaching 22C and 24C respectively. As the heat concentrates across southern and southwestern England, temperatures will climb to 29C in Cambridge and Salisbury, while central areas like Nottingham are also expected to see highs of 28C. It comes as firefighters travelled across the UK to help tackle the major wildfire at Holt Heath, Dorset, fuelling calls for increased firefighting resources. Ben Selby, Fire Brigades Union assistant general secretary said services had undergone '14 years of austerity'. 'The loss of 1 in 5 firefighter posts to cuts, with fire engines taken off the run and fire stations closed up and down the country, means that there is no resilience left,' he said. 'Wildfires are intensive incidents, requiring a large number of firefighters and specialist resources. They are becoming increasingly severe and frequent as a result of the climate emergency.' Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue estimated the blaze had burned through 72ha and would remain on the scene overnight. 'Crews are still working in three sectors dealing with an increase in flare-ups, hotspots and deep-seated fires identified using drones,' the statement read. 'This is due to the weather conditions.' Crews travelled from Merseyside, South Wales, Greater Manchester, Leicestershire, Surrey, Lincolnshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Avon, Essex and Kent among others, to assist local emergency services. Heat health alerts were extended into next week for much of England. Officials have said the country is suffering from 'nationally significant' water shortfalls. The national drought group, which includes the Met Office, regulators, government, water companies and other organisations, has met as five areas of the country remain in drought, with six more in prolonged dry weather status. The UK Health Security Agency said yellow warnings will remain in place for Yorkshire and Humber, the East and West Midlands, London and the South East, South West and east of England until 6pm on August 18. The weekend should be dry and sunny for most parts of the UK, with the mercury forecast to hover around 30C on Saturday and 29C on Sunday in south-west England.
