Djeidi Gassama is Rangers transfer bargain as Sheffield Wednesday insider reveals true value dwarves £2.2m fee
Barry Bannan insists Rangers have bagged a bargain with their £2.2million swoop for Djeidi Gassama.
The Sheffield Wednesday skipper is a huge fan of the French winger, who this week completed a switch from Hillsborough to Ibrox on an initial four-year contract.
Rangers chiefs have taken advantage of the Owls' cash crisis to land the former PSG winger on a cut-price deal.
A number of the club's top earners - including Bannan - were shocked to learn that their wages had not been paid in recent months as the club teetered on financial disaster.
With embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri fighting to keep the lights on, Gers boss Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell saw an opportunity to secure the exciting wideman at a fraction of his true value.
Wednesday's Yorkshire fanbase are now keeping fingers crossed that a takeover bid being led by a mystery consortium can provide a way out of their nightmare.
But the sale of the club will come too late for the Owls punters who believe their club let Gassama go on the cheap - a view that's shared by his former captain.
Bannan told Record Sport: 'Only time will tell but I think if Sheffield Wednesday were not in the circumstances that they are currently in, the fee demanded would have been a lot, lot higher than one Rangers paid - and they would probably have got it as well.
'Obviously the people at Rangers have sensed what was happening down here and realised that they can get it at a good price. Fair play to them, they got a cracking deal done.'
Gassama was schooled in Paris alongside global superstars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
But Bannan believes Russell Martin is the right man to shape the next phase in his footballing development.
Bannan said: 'Djeidi obviously came through at the PSG academy and was out training with their first team players when they had the big three of Messi, Mbappe, Neymar.
'So he's obviously learned from the best that there's ever been in football.
'You can tell he always wants to learn as well and when you give him information, you can see that he's listening and taking it on.
'I have no doubt he's probably done that with those three superstars as well when he was at PSG.
'He's had good coaches obviously as well, which he's been really lucky with because at a young age it is important that you get the right mentors.
'Obviously he had Mauricio Pochettino as his PSG manager at that time and then he came to Wednesday, where he has worked under Danny Rohl who's got a good pedigree in the game too.
'Now he's obviously going to work with Russell Martin, who has a style of football that everybody probably wants to play so I'm sure he'll really enjoy that.'

Jahmai Simpson-Pusey to Celtic could prove major coup after what Pep Guardiola said about Man City prodigy
Brendan Rodgers is said to be lining up a loan swoop for the highly-rated England youth international Celtic are said to be lining up a loan move for Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey. And the teenage star has already been tipped as the future of the Citizens' defence by Pep Guardiola. Highly-rated Simpson-Pusey, 19, burst onto the scene at the Etihad last season and immediately caught the eye. The England youth international made six first-team appearances - including two Champions League outings against Sporting Lisbon and Feyenoord. Simpson-Pusey was also crowned EPL 2 Player of the Year after captaining Man City's reserves to title glory, seeing off competition from Hoops new Bhoy Callum Osmand at Fulham. The youngster actually faced Celtic during City's pre-season tour of the USA in 2024, as Brendan Rodgers' side edged out 4-3 winners. He was then called upon by Guardiola throughout the campaign as the dethroned Premier League champions suffered an injury crisis. And the breakthrough talent seriously impressed his manager, with Guardiola hailing him as one for the future after his display in a 2-1 defeat at Brighton. All-conquering Guardiola said: 'The guy played really good, the young lad again, with this composure and duels and everything was good. It's not easy for him. 'Normally the young lads, they must come in with support from the team, with Rodri in front of them, right? With the best Kyle [Walker], and defenders, and now we support him. 'Now he's playing in a position that is difficult for him, but he performed unbelievably. We have a central defender to help us for the future, for the next years. I'm really pleased. Always there is good news when the situation goes bad, and this is one of them.' Guardiola revealed in December that he was tempted to throw in the rising star in the heat of a Manchester derby. He added: 'For example against (Manchester) United I thought to put Jahmai (Simpson-Pusey); he's played really good, but that pressure in that situation, it's a little bit…' Having offloaded Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki, Celtic are in the market for more defensive cover. At least one winger, midfielder and main striker are also on Rodgers' wishlist as the champions kick off their title defence this weekend. Rangers still a 'work in progress' as they prepare for Panathinaikos
Herald football writer Stephen McGowan thinks Rangers will be "difficult to predict" against Panathinaikos on Wednesday night. Russell Martin's men head to Athens with a 2-0 advantage for the second leg of their Champions League qualifier. They head into their midweek match following a 2-2 draw with English Championship Middlesbrough in a pre-season friendly at the weekend, during which the new boss played a totally different starting XI than at Ibrox last midweek. "Going to Athens 2-0 up on Wednesday and you have to wonder, does he stick with that?" McGowan told the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast. "Does he try to be just a little bit more pragmatic? Would that go against the way he manages? So that's going to be an interesting time. "I don't think the game against Middlesbrough would have told him a great deal about his starting lineup. "I think the problem for Rangers is that they are a work in progress is still very difficult to predict what will happen this season, let alone on Wednesday night."The one thing they have done is they've upset teams like Panathinaikos. They're good at hitting on the break. They're good at pressing the opposition into mistakes. "I don't think the friendly tells you very much what was going to happen Wednesday night, but it's going to be really fascinating to see how Russell Martin plays it."

Oliver Antman to Rangers takes fresh twist as winger clear on transfer non negotiable
The Go Ahead Eagles wide man is on the Ibrox shopping list this summer Go Ahead Eagles winger Oliver Antman has reported for training on Monday morning despite Rangers ramping up their interest. A wide man is high-up on Russell Martin's shopping list having already expressed an interest in Crystal Palace 's Jesurun Rak-Sakyi – but the Eredivise side are also expecting an offer from the Scottish Premiership side for the 23-year-old Antman. A fee of around £5million has been reported for the Finland international after he netted seven goals and an impressive 17 assists to help fire his club to Dutch Cup glory last term. But Voetbal International claim that progress has faltered in a deal and Antman has now reported "to the training ground in Deventer on Monday morning." Sheffield United had been strongly linked with Antman along with Club Brugge with Eagles' director Jan Willem van Dop insisted Antman wouldn't leave on the cheap. The forward doesn't appear to be in any rush to leave - insisting it is more important for him to enjoy his football rather than land a big money move. He told Finnish outlet YLE last month: 'The big thing is also that I enjoy myself on and off the pitch. "I like living in Deventer and I like playing for Go Ahead Eagles. It's really good to be there. 'It wouldn't be a bad thing if I stayed in Holland. I enjoy playing there. But we'll see what the summer brings.'
