Man slams ‘tatkal ticket' booking process, says ‘app crashes, starts buffering'; IRCTC responds
Singh shared his frustrating experience online, saying that even with a fast internet connection, he was unable to secure a Tatkal ticket.
'Tatkal ticket booking reality,' wrote Singh while sharing two screenshots from the IRCTC app. He added, 'Booking starts at 10 am, Garib Rath Express has 240 seats under Tatkal quota.'
He explained that at 10:01 am, a message popped up on the app saying 'booking not started'. 'Then app crashes and starts buffering,' he wrote. 'App responds. Now it shows status as waiting list 41.' It's important to note that Tatkal bookings open at 10:00 am for AC classes (2A/3A/CC/EC/3E), and at 11:00 am for non-AC classes (SL/FC/2S).
Screenshots shared by Singh showed the app message: 'Booking not yet started for the selected quota and class. Please try after some time.' Although these screenshots were taken in October 2024, they have now gone viral with over a million views.
'Even with high-speed Internet, it's close to impossible to book a Tatkal ticket. No idea how agents confirm that they will get it done,' Singh added.
'How does it happen remains a mystery,' he further said.
After Singh's post gained attention, many people online shared their own experiences. One user claimed that agents use special software to grab tickets instantly.
'There is an app which will give you either a confirmed ticket or a 3x refund. Try that and support this intentional manipulation. Legalising something which is illegal is at play here. And no one's asking the right question,' wrote another user.
A third called it a 'big scam', saying, 'Many ticket buyers easily get confirmed tickets from some so-called agents, but when they try to book online or offline, they always face too many problems.'
In response, IRCTC released a statement admitting that booking times can take longer during peak hours, especially under the Tatkal quota. The company said that they are working on improving the system for all users.
'During peak booking timings, particularly during Tatkal due to high demand, seat reservations are often filled rapidly due to the high volume of users accessing the system simultaneously. As the system processes multiple requests in real-time, processing may take additional time in case of a high number of parallel requests being processed,' the statement read.

8 Delhi cops suspended after security lapses during Janmashtami at ISKCON temple

Security around temples and religious places was intensified across the city as large gatherings were expected, a senior police officer said. "During his inspection, the commissioner noticed that at one of the crucial points in the temple premises, no security personnel were deployed. This raised serious concerns regarding the overall preparedness and vigilance of the staff on duty," the officer said. The police chief immediately directed stern action, ordering the suspension of eight personnel for dereliction of duty. He also issued a strict warning to the station house officer of Shahbad Dairy police station, under whose jurisdiction part of the deployment fell. Officials said the suspended personnel include inspectors and sub-inspectors who had been assigned to oversee the temple security arrangements. Their absence from designated points was viewed as a grave lapse, especially given the heightened security advisories for Janmashtami. Senior officials added that the commissioner has asked all district police commissioners to personally monitor arrangements at sensitive religious sites and ensure that personnel remain alert and visible. Singh has said that any negligence in security, particularly during major festivals, will not be tolerated. The Delhi Police has been on high alert across the capital since last week, with security stepped up at temples, marketplaces, transport hubs and other crowded areas to prevent any untoward incident during the festive period. Drawing from the Prime Minister's speech, Singh outlined three areas of focus for the force — self-reliance, technology adoption and healthy competition — and gave timelines to come up with a proposal. The commissioner asked units to submit proposals within 15 days on reducing dependence on other agencies for specialised resources such as commandos, bomb disposal squads and wireless systems. He also said that the force needs to 'go further' in surveillance, cybercrime prevention, anti-drone defence and counter-terror operations. He directed technology units to form committees and submit recommendations within a month. Singh stressed on the need to cultivate healthy competition within the force while discarding jealousy, at both the individual and organisational levels. Singh also congratulated 18 Delhi Police personnel who were conferred police medals for distinguished and meritorious service on Independence Day. Meanwhile, eight Delhi Police personnel, including an inspector, were suspended on Saturday after a surprise inspection by Singh found that they were absent from duty outside an ISKCON temple in Shahbad Dairy. Officials said Singh was reviewing Janmashtami security arrangements across the city when he noticed that officers posted at Gate No. 2 of the temple were missing. A senior police officer confirmed the suspensions and said a departmental inquiry has been initiated to ascertain if more personnel were absent. The suspended staff range from constables to inspector-rank officers, the officer added, stressing that strict action has been ordered.
