Every year, nearly two million Muslims gather in Mecca for the Hajj — Islam's holiest pilgrimage. But this year, amid prayers and rituals, another sight stood out: America's Patriot missile systems. Saudi Arabia deployed the advanced U.S.-made weapons to guard the holy city. Why? Because in today's West Asia, even Mecca isn't safe. With wars in Gaza, Houthi missile threats from Yemen, and rising regional tensions, the Kingdom isn't taking chances. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Sukanta Majumdar welcomes decision to issue gazette notification for Census with caste enumeration

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 16 (ANI): Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar welcomed the decision to issue a gazette notification for the 16th Census with caste enumeration, and said that it will help the government in planning for the future. Sukanta Majumdar said, 'We welcome this decision. It was pending since long time. Census will start from March 1, 2027. It will help the government in planning for the future after getting the data of the census.' He alleged that CM Mamata Banerjee created an OBC-A category and gave reservation to Muslims. 'It is not a reservation on the basis of caste. It is a reservation based on religion. You cannot give a reservation on the basis of being Muslim because it is anti-Constitutional. So from back door Muslim reservation is being given. Karnataka tried to do it, which is anti-Constitutional. Mamata Banerjee had to give reservation to Muslims for vote bank so she is doing it from backdoor. In Bengal, there is 17 per cent reservation for OBC. Why is it not being increased when it is 27 per cent in the country? She is depriving the OBC and giving it to Muslims,' he added. The Central government on Monday notified the population census, the process of which will begin in March 2027. As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.' The reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The reference date for the Union Territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. On June 15, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the preparations for the upcoming Census during a meeting in New Delhi along with Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG& CCI) and other senior officials. Sharing the details in a post on X, Amit Shah said, 'Reviewed the preparations for the 16th Census with senior officials. Tomorrow, the gazette notification of the census will be issued. The census will include caste enumeration for the first time. As many as 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh census functionaries will conduct the operation with cutting-edge mobile digital gadgets.' 'The Census will be conducted in two phases. In phase 1, House Listing Operation (HLO), the housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected,' he added. Subsequently, in the second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected. In the Census, Caste enumeration will also be done. For Census activities, about 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh Census functionaries would be deployed. This is the 16th Census since its beginning and the 8ht since Independence. (ANI)

"Mamata Banerjee work only for 33% Muslims": Agnimitra Paul slams Bengal CM over politics of appeasement

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 17 (ANI): BJP leader Agnimitra Paul on Monday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her TMC Government of prioritizing Muslims, claiming they work only for the 33% Muslim population in West Bengal. Paul predicted the Modi government will come to power in West Bengal in 2026 but warns that if it doesn't, there might be a Muslim Chief Minister, which she believes the Hindu community should be aware of. Agnimitra Paul said, 'Mamata Banerjee's government and Mamata Banerjee work only for 33 percent Muslims, this government is only for the Muslims. Modi government will definitely come to power in West Bengal in 2026, but God forbid if it doesn't come to power, there will be a Muslim Chief Minister here. The sooner the Hindu people of Bengal understand this, the better it is.' Agnimitra Paul also criticized Mamata Banerjee for her response time to crisis situations. She highlighted three incidents: Murshidabad incident, Bada Bazar fire and Khidirpur fire. Paul claimed Mamata Banerjee visited Murshidabad a month after Hindu brothers and sisters became refugees due to an unspecified incident. She visited Bada Bazar 3-4 days after a fire broke out, resulting in Hindu deaths. In contrast, Mamata Banerjee reached Khidirpur within a few hours after a fire broke out in a minority area. 'So much happened in Murshidabad, our Hindu brothers and sisters became refugees, but the Chief Minister did not have time to go there; she went after a month. Bada Bazar caught fire, Hindu people died, the Chief Minister went after 3-4 days but today there was a fire in Khidirpur area which is a minority area, today within a few hours, Mamata Banerjee reached there...,' said Paul. Paul has accused Mamata Banerjee of indulging in 'Muslim appeasement' politics. 'The Muslim appeasement that Mamata Banerjee is doing is intolerable. The sooner the Hindus and nationalist Muslims of Bengal understand this, the better it is for Bengal,' she further said. Earlier on Monday, CM Mamata Banerjee visited the wholesale market in Khidirpur area where a fire broke out on Sunday night, and took stock of the situation. Mamata Banerjee said, 'We have instructed the mayor to completely rebuild the market in a scientific way so that there is no problem in the future. There will be a firefighting arrangement. They will build the market on behalf of the government. It will take time to conduct a full survey to find out how many shops were burned. An investigation will be conducted to find out how the fire started. We will give Rs 1 lakh to those whose shops are completely burnt, we will built the shop also and Rs 50,000 to those whose shops are partially burnt.' She further said that whenever cylinders are placed, they should be tested. 'The present market will have to be shifted to build the new market. The new location has been selected by the Mayor and the Councillor for temporary operation so that the business is not affected,' she further added. A massive fire broke out in the wholesale market in the Khidirpur area of Kolkata last night. Several shops were gutted by the fire. Visuals from the scene showed thick smoke billowing from the market area as fire personnel worked to douse the flames. Notably, Mamata Banerjee's government has been involved in a controversy over OBC certificates issued to Muslims in West Bengal after 2010. The Calcutta High Court's decision to revoke these certificates has been met with opposition from Banerjee, who has pledged to contest the decision on behalf of Muslims. Banerjee's government also introduced schemes like providing monthly stipends of Rs 2,500 to about 30,000 imams and promising land for them to build houses, which critics view as appeasement. (ANI)

Didi blames ‘govt of thieves' for ‘procession of deaths'

Kolkata: "A govt of thieves" was running the country resulting in "the procession of deaths", CM said on Monday alluding to last week's multiple tragedies in Ahmedabad, Uttarakhand and Pune in which nearly 290 people had died. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Banerjee, slamming protesting BJP MLAs in the Bengal assembly for their corruption jibes, asked them to have "some shame". "The 2026 Bengal polls will reduce you to a big zero. People know your politics by now," she said, accusing BJP of "depriving Bengal's poor" even as it failed to halt "the procession of deaths in various mishaps" in BJP-governed states. "A half-pant minister, who did not find time to go to Manipur even once, came to my neighbourhood (in Kalighat) to protest against an incident that had taken place four-five days ago. He then hurled slippers at a Sikh cop," Banerjee said without naming Bengal BJP president and junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar. "I, too, can go to your home. And, if you love slippers so much, please open a slippers stall," she added. "You shelter traitors. You strengthen those who sell the nation. Common people have no security. You have nothing specific to say, so you slander Trinamool and the administration to remain in news," Banerjee told BJP MLAs, reminding them that they had failed to prove even a single corruption charge. "I do not accept the ex-MP's pension of Rs 1.5 lakh. How dare they teach me ethics and honesty?" she asked, demanding answers from BJP on the Centre's non-disbursal of Bengal's funds. "Stop depriving Bengal. We have been denied the 100-day payout for the last four years. Funds meant for us are being allocated to other states, which is a crime. You may have complaints. But 155-156 central teams have come and we have answered all their questions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But the funds block continues. You have to pay if you have made people work," she said, adding that similar complaints were there in BJP-governed Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, too; but their 100-day payouts were never stopped. Banerjee also responded to BJP's OBC jibes: "Bengal has 30% Muslims, among the highest in the country. This has been the demography since Partition. We were not even born then. Is it right to deny the minority food, education? Is it right to say we will not treat them as equals, as human beings?"
