Trump fawns over Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman on Middle East tour

Metro13-05-2025
President Donald Trump showered Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with compliments after receiving a lavish welcome to start his four-day Middle East tour.
Trump's Air Force One was escorted by Saudi Air Force jets, his motorcade flanked by white Arabian horses carrying US and Saudi flags, and Prince Mohammed rolled out the lavender carpet for him on Tuesday.
The US president returned the favor by fawning over the crown prince throughout his speech at the Saudi-US investment forum at the The King Abdulaziz Conference Center in Riyadh.
After standing before the crowd as 'God Bless the USA' by Lee Greenwald played, Trump began praising the kingdom and its de facto ruler.

'What a great place, but more importantly what great people,' said Trump, adding of the crown prince, 'We talk about a great man, that is a great man, a great family.'
Prince Mohammed and government officials and business leaders including Elon Musk, who spoke to entertain the crowd as they awaited Trump, clapped at the president's remarks.
Trump struck his familiar note of boasting about the US and its position in the world – but held back in a way he had not before.
'We are rocking: The United States is the hottest country, with the exception of your country, I have to say, right?' he said, pointing to the crown prince.
'I'm not going to take that on, no Mohammed, I'm not going to take that on. Wouldn't that be a terrible thing to make that full statement, but I will not do it, your honor. At least as long as I'm up here, your honor.'
Trump also joked with the crown prince while possibly contrasting him to former President Joe Biden, whom he bashed repeatedly.
'Mohammed, do you sleep at night? How do you sleep?' What a job,' Trump said.
'He tosses and turns like some of us. It's the ones that don't toss and turn – they're the ones that will never take you to the promised land.
'Critics doubted it was possible, what you've done.'
Trump credited the crown prince for the kingdom's economic development and building towers that are the 'amazing genius of so many people'. He received a standing ovation while mentioning the World Cup, which will be held in Saudi Arabia in 2034.
'The Middle East is defined by commerce, not chaos,' he said.
Trump gushed about the crown prince: 'We have great partners in the world, but we have none stronger and nobody like the gentleman right before me. He's your greatest representative.
'And if I didn't like him, I'd get out of here so fast. He knows me well. I do. I like him a lot. I like him too.'
The crown prince appeared to laugh at every one of Trump's commendations.
Trump thanked Saudi Arabia for facilitating talks between the US and Ukraine toward ending Russia's war.
'If we get that settled we'll pay a special tribute to what you've done,' he said.
Trump concluded with a surprise announcement that he plans to lift sanctions on Syria to allow it to receive international investment and aid to rebuild from its civil war. Trump said he made the decision after speaking with Prince Mohammed and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
'The Golden Age of the Middle East can proceed right alongside us,' Trump said.
'We will win together and we will always be friends.'
Trump finished off by referring to Saudi Arabia as 'what I think is the greatest nation in the world and we are with you all along the way'.
The crown prince stepped on stage and shook hands with Trump as the president's favorite rally ending song 'Y.M.C.A.' by Village People played. More Trending
According to the White House, Trump secured $600billion in deals with the Saudi government and firms while at the kingdom's capital.
Trump said he has been working 'relentlessly' to end the Russia-Ukraine war and that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other top US officials will travel to Turkey on Thursday for talks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will be waiting in Istanbul for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has not said if he will appear.
'We'll see if we can get it done,' Trump said of peace talks.

Trump calls for the 'Squad' to take cognitive exams

By President Donald Trump is calling for AOC and her progressive cohort of lawmakers, called the 'Squad,' to take cognitive exams. Trump, 79, has frequently sparred with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , D-N.Y., since she was first elected in 2019. She represents a New York near where the president grew up, and he has ridiculed her for incompetence and 'radical' policies. For her part, Ocasio-Cortez, 35, has opposed Trump on nearly every issue, and her vocal opposition has earned her a special spot among the president's most frequently criticized targets. 'Each of these political hacks should be forced to take a cognitive exam, much like the one I recently took while getting my 'physical' at our great Washington, D.C., military hospital (WR!),' he continued. 'As the doctors said, 'President Trump ACED it, something that is rarely seen!'' he bragged. 'These Radical Left Lunatics would all fail this test in a spectacular show of stupidity and incompetence. Take the test!' Neither the offices for Ocasio-Cortez nor Crockett responded to the Daily Mail's request for comment. The president launched a similar attack against the Democrats in early July, saying AOC is 'very nice but she's very low IQ, and we don't need low IQ.' 'Between her and Crockett, we're going to give them both an IQ test to see who comes out best.' As Ocasio-Cortez and Crockett have emerged as some of the most popular young faces of the Democratic Party, Trump has taken note and made sure to hit them at every opportunity. But the resistance leaders had leaned into the new feud. 'Mr. President, don't take your anger out on me – I'm just a silly girl,' AOC responded to a recent Trump outburst about her intelligence. He's called her 'one of the 'dumbest' people in Congress.' The back and forth last month came after AOC called for the president to be impeached over authorizing U.S. airstrikes in Iran in June. Crockett has also punched back at the president for his comments about her. 'We've already been over this. I've got the degrees, the credentials, and the receipts. If you're looking for 'low IQ,' try looking in the mirror—or at your own Cabinet,' Crockett posted on X earlier this month. Trump took a cognitive test in April as a part of his annual medical check at Walter Reed Hospital near Washington, D.C.

Donald Trump snubs Zelensky from Putin meeting in brutal 'nothing happened' slam

Donald Trump is set for a face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin on Friday, but appears to have sidelined Volodymyr Zelensky from this week's discussions Donald Trump has said Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited to his meeting with Vladimir Putin after accusing the Ukrainian leader of doing 'nothing' in the past three years. ‌ The decision ahead of Friday's summit in Alaska has fuelled concerns in Kyiv and across Europe that a peace plan could be negotiated without its direct involvement. It came as it emerged that Ukraine could agree to stop fighting and cede territory already held by Russia as part of a European-backed plan for peace. Speaking about why Zelensky was not invited, Trump said during a White House briefing: "He wasn't a part of it. I would say he could go, but he's gone to a lot of meetings. You know, he's been there for three and a half years. Nothing happened.' ‌ ‌ The US President said the Alaska summit with Putin would be a first step in assessing whether an agreement to end the war was possible. "We're going to have a meeting with Vladimir Putin, and at the end of that meeting, probably in the first two minutes, I'll know exactly whether or not a deal can be [made] because that's what I do. I make deals,' he told reporters at the White House today. Trump insisted that any settlement would not be decided solely by him. 'I'm not going to make a deal. It's not up to me to make a deal. I think a deal should be made for both,' he said, adding he would know within "two minutes" if it was possible. 'How will you know that?' a reporter asked. 'Because that's what I do. I make deals,' Trump said. The president later added that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky would be necessary. 'Ultimately, I'm going to put the two of them in a room. I'll be there, or I won't be there, and I think it'll get solved,' Trump said. ‌ The president said that 'there could be many definitions' of a good deal, but he also seemed to lower expectations ahead of Friday's summit. 'I expect to have a meeting with Putin that I think it'll be good, but it might be bad,' Trump said. Despite the President's plans, the Prime Minister's official spokesman warned yesterday that Putin should never be trusted "as far as you can throw him". ‌ They added: "We will obviously support President Trump and European nations as we enter these negotiations. But it is exactly why we've been leading this work on the coalition of the willing, because any ceasefire, as I say, cannot just be an opportunity for President Putin to go away, re-arm, restrengthen, and then go again. "So we're not going to leave it to trust. We're going to ensure that we're prepared such that we achieve a ceasefire. "The coalition of willing and the security guarantees are in place... that learns the lessons of the past, where we clearly have not had those meaningful security guarantees in place, which did allow President Putin to re-arm and go again." Quizzed on whether Zelenskyy should be attending Friday's meeting, the PM's spokesman said: "The UK will never waver in our support for Ukraine. Ukraine's future must be one of freedom, security and self-determination. It will choose its own path and we will stand with it until peace is just and sovereignty is secure. Any peace must be built with Ukraine." ‌ They added: "It's up to the United States to set out details of the talks President Trump is leading later in the week. More broadly, the path to peace cannot be decided without Ukraine." The US leader's approach has rattled Ukraine and its European allies, who fear a bilateral arrangement could leave Kyiv sidelined and under pressure to accept territorial concessions. But today, details of a European-backed plan emerged showing Ukraine could agree to halt fighting and cede territory already under Russian control. Zelensky has told European leaders they must reject any settlement that demands surrendering Ukrainian-held territory, although he has indicated that land already occupied by Russia could be part of negotiations. ‌ This would effectively freeze the frontline in its current position and hand Moscow de facto control of areas in Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Crimea. 'The plan can only be related to the current positions held by the militaries,' a Western official said, describing a flurry of weekend diplomacy between Kyiv and its allies ahead of Friday's talks. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned of the stakes, saying: 'I have many fears and a lot of hope.' He added that US officials had promised to consult European capitals before the Trump–Putin face-to-face meeting. One of the central European concerns is a purported peace plan, backed by Moscow, which calls for freezing the battle lines in south-eastern Ukraine if Kyiv agrees to withdraw from parts of Donetsk and Luhansk still under its control. European leaders have backed Kyiv's position that any concessions should be limited to territory already occupied by Russian forces. Their strategy is to present a united diplomatic front, described by one Western official as a single 'Ukraine plus Europe' red line, in an attempt to persuade Trump not to push for deeper Ukrainian compromises. ‌ 'Europeans now understand their role as supportive of Ukraine in terms of the diplomatic negotiations,' the official said. 'It's a boost for morale, it's also strengthening the diplomatic positions of Ukraine so that it doesn't feel alone.' Tusk was emphatic about rejecting changes to borders imposed by military force. 'For Poland and our partners, it is clear that state borders cannot be changed by force,' he said at a press conference. 'Russia's war with Ukraine must not bring benefits to the aggressor.' ‌ Over the weekend, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued statements echoing Tusk's stance, pledging firm opposition to any peace arrangement that would involve surrendering land to Moscow. Trump's meeting with Putin is expected to focus on identifying what he described as 'parameters' for a potential settlement before he engages with Zelensky and European leaders. However, critics argue that the sequencing of the talks - meeting Russia first, then Ukraine - risks giving the Kremlin an advantage in shaping the narrative and terms of any deal. The war, now well into its third year, has cost tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions. While both sides remain entrenched, the possibility of a freeze in fighting and a territorial compromise has gained weight among some diplomats seeking to end the conflict. Yet for many in Kyiv, the danger lies in any perception that Western resolve is weakening. European capitals fear that without a firm, united stance, Putin could exploit divisions to secure a peace deal that rewards his invasion. The Alaska summit will be Trump and Putin's first in-person meeting since the US President returned to the White House in January. Both leaders are expected to make public statements after the talks, though no joint press conference is planned.

Trump invites Forrest to Oval Office in video call after Nexo Championship win

Grant Forrest thought a video call being lined up with Donald Trump was a wind-up, and said speaking to the US President after his tournament win was the most surreal experience of his career. President Trump congratulated Forrest after the Scot claimed victory at the Nexo Championshipe at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire on Sunday, in a moment Forrest described as 'bonkers'. And the Scot told STV he's not only been challenged to a game against the President in America, but has also been invited to the Oval Office. Forrest celebrated his first tour title in four years when he finished four shots clear of the chasing pack, and was already savouring a special moment with a title triumph on home soil. Celebrations turned to shock when he was asked to speak to the course owner, who famously loves his golf. 'I came off the 18th green, did my interviews and scorecard and lots of photos and stuff,' Forrest told STV. 'Then went into the clubhouse and they sort of shut off a wing and said 'Yeah, there's something else that they would like you to do. 'I was like, 'surely not?', you know. Sarah Malone, who's in charge up there, she was next to me and she's got President Trump as a contact on her phone. She presses FaceTime and I thought 'This has got to be a wind up'. 'It wasn't and he was standing there on on the tee at his golf course. Just bonkers, really.' Forrest described 'a heck of a few minutes' and doesn't think he'll experience anything comparable in the future. 'It was the most surreal experience, certainly in my golfing career. And I doubt anything will top that in terms of the wow factor. How many people get put on FaceTime to the US President. 'He was very complimentary. He loves his golf and is obviously very proud of his golf courses and they do an amazing job with every golf property they touch. 'It was a heck of a few minutes.' Having spoken over the phone, Forrest could now meet Trump face to face after being invited to Washington and for a round. 'He's told me to get on a plane and get over, but there was too much going on last night to even think about that,' Forrest said. 'If the offer's still there at another point, then when he's not too busy then absolutely. 'He also invited us to the Oval Office, which would be unreal but who knows? He's a busy man. 'Maybe when he's not too busy playing golf himself or doing presidential duties, but we'll see.' Forrest also took a moment to contemplate Trump's offer of a game and how that might go. 'He's won a few club championships, a fair few. I think even for his age, he still swings it pretty good. 'It depends on how many shots I have to give him.' And how many shots does the Nexo Championship winner think he would have to give the President of the United States? 'Probably whatever the Secret Service tell me I need to give him.'
