If you have always wished to move to another country temporarily or permanently, Paraguay in South America can be your ideal choice. A landlocked country, Paraguay is popularly known as the "Heart of South America" due to its central location, and offers temporary as well as permanent residency - and Indians can apply too.
What Is Paraguay's Temporary Residency
Temporary residency in Paraguay allows you to work, stay, and invest in the country for two years. The best part - you can extend it, and this residency will open a pathway for you to get a permanent residency, for which you can apply after 21 months of residing in the country.
People who show that they have enough financial means, or plan to start a business or practise a profession, or meet specific visa requirements, are eligible for a temporary residency in Paraguay. You don't need an investment for this visa. Freelancers, remote workers, entrepreneurs, and retirees can also apply for a Paraguay Temporary Residency.
Documents Required
While there is no specific rule for applying for a Paraguay residency, you need to have all the documents for it, including:
A valid passport
Entry visa or passport stamp
Apostilled birth certificate
Clean criminal record from your home country
Marriage certificate or divorce, or death certificate
Proof of financial solvency
All documents must be translated into Spanish by a certified translator.
How To Apply
Step 1: Check your eligibility and prepare the documents.
Step 2: Enter the country on a tourist visa. You will have to be physically present in Paraguay to apply for the residency.
Step 3: Fill out the application once you are in the country at the immigration office or Direccion General de Migraciones (DGM).
Step 4: Obtain local Paraguayan documents, including:
An interpol certificate
Paraguayan police clearance
Registration card from the national police
Certification of life and residence - this is to show that you have a place of residence in Paraguay
Temporary Residency card
Temporary Residency certificate
Step 5: Submit your application at DGM and apply for the official fees, which is usually around USD 380 (Rs 33,202 approximately). This is the government fee for the application; the total cost may be higher as you have to pay lawyer fees, document translation fee, etc.
Step 6: You will then receive the residency application receipt, which will allow you to apply for a temporary Paraguayan ID card (cedula).
Step 7: Apply for a temporary Paraguayan ID and wait for approval, which takes about 3-6 months.
You can get the visa renewed before it expires if you continue to meet the requirements. It is also a pathway to apply for permanent residency after 21 months of living in Paraguay.
Also, while temporary residency does not require you to stay in Paraguay at all times, you must not be away for more than 12 or more consecutive months.

Kochi–Lakshadweep seaplane service from next month

Kochi: Opening a new chapter in the state's aviation history, seaplane service to Lakshadweep from Kochi airport is set to take off next month. All preliminary steps, including trial runs, have been successfully completed, officials of Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) said on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The one-way fare from Kochi to Lakshadweep will be around Rs 12,000. The Union govt has approved SpiceJet to operate seaplanes on this sector," said Manu G, airport director, Cial. "We may be able to offer a few tickets in the Rs 2,000–4,000 range once this service is brought under the UDAN scheme... De Havilland, the manufacturer of the seaplane, has recommended a passenger capacity of 18 to 20," he said. "We have suggested four destinations within the state for seaplane operations. Services within Kerala will begin after the Kochi–Lakshadweep operations are commissioned," he said. Helicopter services to Pampa are already operated from Cial, but their commercial viability remains doubtful. "A 45-minute journey by helicopter costs around Rs 60,000 per person. Normally, it is affordable only for business-class passengers. Common people cannot bear such costs. But the seaplane project has been designed to make the journey affordable to the common man," Manu said, adding that the priority is to enhance connectivity and boost tourism. The seaplane trial flight from Kochi backwaters to Mattupetty Dam near Munnar was conducted on Nov 11, 2024. Seaplane services were originally conceived in 2013, but they had to be abandoned owing to protests and feasibility concerns. Fishermen had opposed the project, fearing disruption to fishing activities, while environmental groups raised ecological concerns.

Mopa-London direct flights from Oct 26

Panaji: Offering hope to Goan expats and British tourists, Air India indicated the resumption of direct flights from Mopa to London (Gatwick) from Oct 26. Air India, currently facing a shortage of aircraft, is expected to operate three flights per week. The airline announced that the route will be operated thrice a week — on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays — using its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Officials at Mopa's Manohar International Airport said that the private airline has slots for the direct flight and can resume operations whenever feasible for the airline. The airline's website has opened up bookings for the direct flight, with economy fares beginning at Rs 31,300 for a one-way flight to London on Oct 26. 'Air India has not cancelled their slots with us. They still have the slots for the London flights, and they can resume operations as soon as they want,' said GMR Goa International Airport Ltd official. Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade had mentioned the need to restore the Goa–London Gatwick flight during the Zero Hour in Parliament. Air India launched the non-stop flight to London in July 2023 with three flights per week. The flight offered a vital travel link for thousands of Goans, including students and senior citizens, living in the UK. The suspension of the flight following the crash at Ahmedabad caused inconvenience to Goans travelling to London. Air India is currently undergoing a $400 million fleet-wide refurbishment programme, with a significant focus on upgrading its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and the Boeing 777 aircraft. This modernisation programme, which will continue well into 2027, has proved to be a challenge for the airline in terms of operational deployment. Resumption of the direct flights to London comes just as Goa's charter season picks up and tourism inflows commence for the travel season. PM Modi to unveil ₹5,200 cr metro, road projects in Kolkata on Aug 22

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation of projects worth Rs 5,200 crore, including three new stretches of the Kolkata Metro, and an elevated corridor in adjacent Howrah, during his visit to the eastern metropolis on August 22, officials said. PM Modi will inaugurate the new Metro stretches around 4.15 pm on Friday and undertake a metro ride from Jessore Road metro station to Jai Hind Bimanbandar station and back, a Kolkata Metro Railway spokesperson said on Wednesday. He will also lay the foundation of 7.2-km elevated Kona Expressway worth over Rs 1,200 crore, which will enhance connectivity between Howrah and Kolkata. The inauguration of the crucial 13.62 km, in all, of metro stretches will provide seamless connectivity between important points in the city, including Howrah and Sealdah stations, IT hub Sector 5 and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The three new stretches are Sealdah to Esplanade (2.45 km), Noapara to Jaihind Bimanbandar (6.77 km) and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay to Beleghata stations (4.39 km) across three different corridors of Kolkata Metro. After the inauguration, PM Modi will also address the gathering at Jessore Road metro station. The Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro service will significantly improve access to the airport. The Sealdah-Esplanade metro will reduce the travel time between the two points from nearly 40 minutes to only 11 minutes, a Metro statement said. The Beleghata-HemantaMukhopadhyay metro section will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity with the IT hub. These metro routes will connect some of Kolkata's busiest areas, bring a notable reduction in travel time, and strengthen multimodal connectivity, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters, it added. While the new stretches will provide wide access to daily commuters and visitors to the length and breadth of the city, it is expected to also help revellers visit Durga Puja pandals throughout the metropolis during the festivities later next month.
