Depleting Inventory of Imported Rare-Earth Magnets a Concern For EV Industry

Contribute Now New Delhi: Stakeholders in the electric vehicle (EV) industry are concerned about the fact that inventories of rare-earth magnets used in EV traction motors and power steering systems could run dry by mid-July this year. Rating agency Icra has said that in wake of the depleting inventory, there is a need for urgent contingency planning. 'The rare-earth magnet supply shock is a serious concern, particularly for EVs and premium passenger vehicles. Rare-earth magnets, especially neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB), are indispensable for high-efficiency traction motors and other advanced automotive systems. With inventories expected to deplete by mid-July, contingency planning has become urgent,' said Jitin Makkar, senior vice president and group head, corporate ratings, Icra, reported Business Standard. The delay in the shipments of rare-earth magnets began in April, when authorities in China introduced new licensing rules and intensified inspections, which led to custom clearances slowing down. It resulted in unpredictable shipping timelines and uncertainty about future availability. According to the estimates of Crisil, another rating agency, the present challenge could affect up to 6-7 per cent of quarterly EV production if the issue remains unresolved within the next two months. In FY 25, India imported around $200 million worth of rare-earth magnets. A majority of these imports were used in automotive and industrial applications. In electric two-wheelers, motors cost between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 15,000, with rare earth magnets accounting for around 30 per cent of the motor cost. The rare-earth magnets are important because of their high magnetic strength, energy efficiency, and thermal stability. These properties are difficult to replicate with conventional alternatives like ferrite magnets. Tesla Model S And Model X Updated Once Again: Here's What Changed

Tesla has launched the updated versions of its Model S and Model X flagship electric cars. These new iterations of the cars come with minor updates if the changes made to the Model 3 and Model Y are taken into consideration. It is to be noted that these models bring less than 5 percent of the American automaker's total sales, which is probably an explanation of why the brand has made only minor changes. Starting with the design, the Tesla Model S and Model X have very minor differences compared to the outgoing models. These differences can be seen in the form of an updated front bumper on the dual which offers a slightly more aggressive look compared to the predecessor. Additionally, both of these new models have received a new set of shoes. The Model X now gets a new design for the 20-inch and 22-inch wheels while the Model S continues to have the 19-inch and 21-inch options. Another noticeable change in the appearance is the presence of a new camera in the front bumper. Additionally, there are certain changes in the headlights of both the vehicles which includes new adaptive functions. The brand claims that the changes in the Model S Plain contribute to improving high-speed stability. These changes are complemented by the presence of a new Frost Blue paint. The updated Tesla Model S and Model X also promise quieter cabins because of a better Active Noise Cancellation System. While most of the interiors are the same, configurable ambient lighting is new. Furthermore, the brand claims that it will have improved ride quality because of an updated suspension setup. With all of these changes the Model X will be sold at 89,990 dollar (around Rs 77.40 lakh) for Long Range and 104,990 dollars (around Rs 90.30 lakh) for Plaid, both increases of 5,000 dollar (around Rs 4.30 lakh). Similarly, the Model S is available as a Long Range or Plaid, with prices starting at 84,990 dollar (around Rs 73.09 lakh) and 99,990 dollars (around Rs 85.97 lakh), respectively.

Sona BLW shares fall 8% intraday as Chairman's demise, Israel-Iran tensions dent sentiments

Shares of Sona BLW Precision Forgings fell over 8% on Friday on the intraday basis dragged by an ill-fated demise of company's Chairman and Non-Executive Director Sunjay Kapur on Thursday. The overall weak market sentiments on the back of growing tensions between Israel and Iran added to the woes. "With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our esteemed Chairman and Non-Executive Director, Mr. Sunjay Kapur on June 12, 2025, in England, United Kingdom," the filing said. "We assure our customers, business partners, employees, and shareholders that our operations and prospects remain unchanged as we honor his legacy. We are committed to upholding his legacy by advancing our mission and the values he instilled in Sona Comstar," the filing said further. Fresh geopolitical tensions which flared on Friday also caused significant damage to the market mood as Israel launched attacks against military and nuclear sites in Iran, which left key military commanders and nuclear scientists dead while stoking fears of a full-blown war in the region. Asian markets including India fell sharply. India's headline index Nifty fell by over 400 points or 1.6% to hit the day's low of 24,473 while the BSE Sensex plunged by over 1,300 points to touch the bottom of 80,354.59/. The selling pressure was seen across sectors with banks, auto and energy stocks getting most severely punished. While the auto stocks made some recovery, the Nifty Auto index fell 500 points or 2% in the day's trade with 14 stocks out of 15, trading in the red. Sona Comstar, formerly known as Sona BLW Precision Forgings, is a leading Indian-based automotive technology company specialising in the design, manufacturing, and supply of automotive systems and components. They produce parts for both traditional and electric vehicles, including differential assemblies, gears, starter motors, and EV traction motors. The company reported its highest-ever quarterly net profit, despite a year-on-year decline in revenue for the fourth quarter. In Q4 FY25, the company recorded a net profit of ₹164 crore, reflecting a 10% YoY increase. Revenue for the quarter stood at Rs 868 crore, marking a 2% decline.
