US consulate economic unit chief visits TDAP
KARACHI: The USA Consulate Karachi, Economic Unit Chief, Kevin Furey and Tyrell Walker, Economic Officer, along with their team, called on Faiz Ahmad Chadhar, the Chief Executive, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan to discuss multiple areas of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Chadhar informed the visiting USA diplomats that the USA is a major trading partner of Pakistan. However, the volume of trade between two countries is significantly low which needs to be increased with bilateral cooperation and trade facilitation.
The Economic Unit Chief of USA, Kevin endorsed this point and ensured support and cooperation to enhance volume of bilateral trade between the two nations. The discussion focused on enhancing bilateral trade and investment, with key areas of collaboration suggested by TDAP including: Textile, leather and surgical products, IT & E-Commerce Services, Tourism, Logistics, and Construction, Workforce Development to strengthen capacity for the U.S. market, Agricultural Exports with complete value chain of value added and finished products, Facilitating trade delegations participating in Trade shows / Fairs of both countries.
The Chief Executive appreciated that historically, USA has played pivotal role in industrial development of Pakistan and providing opportunities for Pakistani businessmen in the USA and the western markets.
The USA team was briefed about TDAP's ongoing trade promotion initiatives, inviting the USA businesses to participate in key flagship events organized by TDAP under the umbrella of its annual Business Plan.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade ties and fostering future collaboration in economic development through enhancing productivity and competitiveness of Pakistani Industrial and agricultural sectors.

Pak delegation interacts with Chatham House
LONDON: A high-level Pakistani parliamentary delegation, led by former Foreign minister and Chairman Pakistan People Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, engaged with eminent members of the British think tank, academia, and policymaking community at the prestigious Chatham House, one of the UK's leading think tanks focused on foreign and security policy issues. The closed-door discussion was held under the 'Chatham House Rules,' which is used around the world to encourage inclusive and open dialogue in meetings. Bhutto Zardari and other delegation members conveyed Pakistan's perspective on the recent escalation in South Asia while expressing serious concern about India's unprovoked military aggression that resulted in civilian casualties and posed a significant threat to regional stability. They underscored that India's actions constituted a clear violation of Pakistan's sovereignty, international law, and the United Nations Charter. The Pakistan delegation said that Pakistan's armed forces, with the full support of the people of Pakistan, had given a befitting response to India, demonstrating Pakistan's resolve to defend its sovereignty, and thwarting India's ambitions to set any new so-called 'normal' in the region. Bhutto Zardari strongly denounced India's unilateral and illegal suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. He warned that the weaponisation of water undermines international norms and sets a perilous precedent. He urged the international community to take notice of this alarming development and hold India to account for its actions. The delegation noted that the pending resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains the principal stumbling block to lasting peace and stability in the region. They urged the international community to support meaningful dialogue and ensure respect for international commitments and human rights. Survey fails to calculate unemployment rate for current year
ISLAMABAD: The Economic Survey 2024-25 failed to calculate the unemployment rate for the current year and instead cited the rate prevalent four years ago in 2020-21: 6.3 percent from Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2020-21. The reason noted in the report is that the LFS for 2022-23 could not be undertaken due to the engagement of PBS with the 7th Population & Housing Census. However, work on LFS 2024-25 is under process. The LFS survey reveals that in 2020-21 youth (aged 15-24) had the highest unemployment rate of 11.1 percent, with 10.0 percent for males and 14.4 percent for females. The second highest unemployment rate was seen amongst 25-34 year olds, with a rate of 7.3 percent. PBS conducts first digital census: Around 7.8pc of total population unemployed Among this group, 5.4 percent of males and 13.3 percent of females were unemployed leading to the conclusion that unemployment is more prevalent among females, especially those between 15 and 24 years of age. The survey mentioned that during 2024, the BE&OE and the OEC registered 727,381 workers for overseas employment. According to BE&OE, more than 62 percent (452,562) of Pakistani workers moved to Saudi Arabia for employment, followed by Oman (11 percent), to earn a living. UAE employed 64,130 Pakistani workers (9 percent) while Qatar offered jobs to 40,818 individuals (6 percent). Bahrain and Malaysia hosted 25,198 workers (3 percent) and 5,790 workers (1 percent), respectively. In 2024, the highest number of workers who went abroad for employment was from Punjab (404,345), followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (187,103), Sindh (60,424), and Tribal areas (29,937). The skill composition of Pakistani emigrants in 2024 continues to be dominated by unskilled and semi-skilled labour, with relatively low representation from highly qualified and highly skilled professionals. According to the data, 50 percent of emigrants fall under the unskilled category (366,092), while 35 percent (255,706) are skilled workers. Although there has been a slight decline compared to 2023, unskilled labour remains in high demand globally, particularly in construction, domestic work, and agriculture sectors. The total population of Pakistan according to Seventh Population and Housing Census (2023) has reached 241.5 million; growing at 2.55 percent annually. The population comprises 124.32 million (51.5%) males and 117.15 million (48.5) females. A significant share of Pakistan's population is young, with 26% aged 15-29 years, while 53.8% fall within the working-age group of 15-59 years. This demographic dividend presents a unique opportunity for economic expansion and development. CM directs registration of non-registered restaurants, marriage halls
LAHORE: A decision has been made to immediately register unregistered restaurants and marriage halls in Punjab. Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed to take prompt measures for the registration of all small and large restaurants as well as marriage halls across the province. The Chief Minister while chairing a special meeting approved the decision for the registration of all restaurants and marriage halls across Punjab. The Chief Minister rejected all proposals to enhance taxes. She directed the relevant institutions to expand the tax net instead of merely increasing the tax rate. She asserted, 'Increasing taxes to place unnecessary burden on the public will not be permitted and tolerated at any cost. The owners of restaurants and marriage halls who get themselves registered should not be punished while the tax evaders should not be allowed to go scot-free under any circumstance.' The Chief Minister emphasized that the government does not want to place any sort of financial burden on the common man. She highlighted, 'A person earning Rs200,000 pays tax regularly, while those earning millions do not pay any tax and wilfully indulge into tax evasion.' She also directed the Punjab Revenue Authority, Mines & Minerals, and other government departments to explore new measures to generate as well as enhance revenue in the province.
